Once in Royal David’s citystood a lowly cattle shed,where a mother laid her babyin a manger for His bed;Mary was that mother mild,Jesus Christ her little child.

He came down to earth from heavenwho is God and Lord of all,and His shelter was a stable,and His cradle was a stall;with the poor and mean and lowlylived on earth our Saviour holy.

And our eyes at last shall see Him,through His own redeeming love;for that child so dear and gentleis our Lord in heaven above,and He leads His children onto the place where He is gone.

Not in that poor lowly stable,with the oxen standing by,we shall see Him, but in heaven,set at God’s right hand on highwhen like stars; His childrencrownedall in white shall wait around.

Away in a manger, no crib for a bed,the little Lord Jesus laid down His sweethead.The stars in the bright sky looked downwhere He lay,the little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay.

The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes,but little Lord Jesus no crying He makes.I love thee, Lord Jesus! Look down fromthe sky,and stay by my bedside ‘till morning isnigh.

Be near me, Lord Jesus; I ask thee to stay,close by me forever and love me, I pray.Bless all the dear children in thy tendercare,and fit us for heaven, to live with theethere.

O little town of Bethlehem,how still we see Thee lie!Above Thy deep and dreamless sleepthe silent stars go by:yet in thy dark streets shineth,the everlasting Light;the hopes and fears of all the years,are met in Thee tonight.

For Christ is born of Mary;and gathered all above,while mortals sleep, the angels keep,their watch of wondering love.O morning stars, togetherproclaim the holy birth,and praises sing, to God the King,and peace to men on earth.

How silently, how silently,the wondrous gift is given!So God imparts to human heartsthe blessings of His heaven.No ear may hear His coming;but in this world of sin,where meek souls will receive Him, stillthe dear Christ enters in.

O holy child of Bethlehem,descend to us we pray;cast out our sin and enter in;be born in us today.We hear the Christmas angelsthe great glad tidings tell;O come to us abide with us,our Lord Emmanuel.

See, amid the winter’s snow,born for us on earth below,see, the tender Lamb appears,promised from eternal years.

Hail, thou ever-blessèd morn!Hail, redemption’s happy dawn!Sing through all Jerusalem:Christ is born in Bethlehem!

Lo, within a manger liesHe who built the starry skies,He who, throned in height sublime,sits amid the cherubim.

Hail, thou ever-blessèd morn!Hail, redemption’s happy dawn!Sing through all Jerusalem:Christ is born in Bethlehem!

Say, ye holy shepherds, say,what your joyful news today;wherefore have ye left your sheepon the lonely mountain steep?

Hail, thou ever-blessèd morn!Hail, redemption’s happy dawn!Sing through all Jerusalem:Christ is born in Bethlehem!

“As we watched at dead of night,lo we saw a wondrous light:angels singing peace on earth,told us of the Saviour’s birth.”

Hail, thou ever-blessèd morn!Hail, redemption’s happy dawn!Sing through all Jerusalem:Christ is born in Bethlehem!

Sacred infant, all divine,what a tender love was Thine,thus to come from highest bliss,down to such a world as this!

Hail, thou ever-blessèd morn!Hail, redemption’s happy dawn!Sing through all Jerusalem:Christ is born in Bethlehem!

Teach, O teach us, holy Child,by Thy face so meek and mild,teach us to resemble Thee,in Thy sweet humility.

Hail, thou ever-blessèd morn!Hail, redemption’s happy dawn!Sing through all Jerusalem:Christ is born in Bethlehem!

Hark! the herald angels sing,Glory to the new-born King.

While shepherds watched theirflocks by night,all seated on the ground,the angel of the Lord came down,and glory shone around.

“Fear not” said he for mighty dreadhad seized their troubled mind,“Glad tidings of great joy I bring,to you and all mankind”.

“To you in David’s town this dayis born of David’s linea Saviour, who is Christ the Lord;and this shall be the sign:

The heavenly babe you there shallfind,to human view displayed,all meanly wrapped in swathingbands,and in a manger laid.”

Thus spake the seraph; andforthwithappeared a shining throng,of angels praising God, who thusaddressed their joyful song:

“All glory be to God on high,and to the earth be peace;goodwill henceforth from heaven tomenbegin and never cease.”

God rest you merry, gentlemen,let nothing you dismay,for Jesus Christ our Saviourwas born upon this day;to save us all from Satan’s power,when we were gone astray.

O tidings of comfort and joy!Comfort and joy!O tidings of comfort and joy!

In Bethlehem in JewryThis blesséd babe was born,And laid within a mangerUpon this blesséd mornThe which his mother MaryDid nothing take in scorn

O tidings of comfort and joy!Comfort and joy!O tidings of comfort and joy!

From God our heavenly Fathera blessèd angel came,and unto certain shepherdsbrought tidings of the same,how that in Bethlehem was born,the Son of God by name.

O tidings of comfort and joy!Comfort and joy!O tidings of comfort and joy!

The shepherds at those tidingsrejoicèd much in mind,and left their flocks a-feedingin tempest, storm and wind,and went to Bethlehem straightwaythis blessed babe to find.

O tidings of comfort and joy!Comfort and joy!O tidings of comfort and joy!

And when to Bethlehem they cameWhereat this infant lay,They found him in a mangerWhere oxen feed on hay;His mother Mary kneelingUnto the Lord did pray.

O tidings of comfort and joy!Comfort and joy!O tidings of comfort and joy!

Now to the Lord sing praises,all you within this place,and with true love and brotherhoodeach other now embrace;this holy tide of Christmasall anger should efface.

O tidings of comfort and joy!Comfort and joy!O tidings of comfort and joy!

Cheadle at Christmas“Who will travelfurthest thisChristmas?”

As with gladness men of olddid the guiding star behold;as with joy they hailed its light,leading onward, beaming bright;so, most gracious Lord, may weevermore be led to Thee.

As with joyful steps they sped,Saviour, to thy lowly bed,There to bend the knee beforeThee whom heaven and earthadore;so may we with willing feetever seek thy mercy-seat.

As they offered gifts most rareat thy cradle rude and bare,so may we with holy joy,pure and free from sin’s alloy,all our costliest treasures bring,Christ, to thee, our heavenly King.

Holy Jesus, every daykeep us in the narrow way;and, when earthly things are past,bring our ransomed souls at lastwhere they need no star to guide,where no clouds Thy glory hide.

Cheadle at Christmas“What is yourfavouriteChristmasmemory orstory?

In the bleak midwinterfrosty wind made moan,Earth stood hard as iron,water like a stone;snow had fallen, snow on snow,snow on snow,in the bleak midwinter,long ago.

Our God, heaven cannot hold Him,nor earth sustain;heaven and earth shall flee awaywhen He comes to reign:in the bleak midwintera stable-place sufficedthe Lord God almightyJesus Christ.

Angels and archangelsmay have gathered there,cherubim and seraphimthronged the air but His mother only,in her maiden blissworshipped the Belovèd,with a kiss.

What can I give Him,poor as I am?If I were a shepherd,I would give a lamb;if I were a wise man,I would do my part;yet what I can I give Him –give my heart.

Cheadle at Christmas“What makesyour Christmasmost special?”

O come, all ye faithful,joyful and triumphant,O come ye, O come ye, toBethlehem,come and behold Him,born the King of angels;

O come let us adore Him,O come let us adore Him,O come let us adore Him,Christ the Lord.

God of God, light of light,lo, He abhors not the virgin’s womb;very God,begotten not created;

O come let us adore Him,O come let us adore Him,O come let us adore Him,Christ the Lord.

Sing choirs of angels,sing in exultation,sing, all ye citizensof heaven and above,glory to God, in the highest;

O come let us adore Him,O come let us adore Him,O come let us adore Him,Christ the Lord.
