Heading up a strong, collaborativeteam, they have developed designs true to the spirit andintentions of the original Erskine Tovatt plan, but withdifferent twist in every block. We sat down to find outmore about their involvement with the project.behindGreenwichMillenniumVillageRalph Erskine and Johannes Tovatt’s visionary masterplan wasalways going to be a tough act to follow. But the architectsJestico & Whiles have more than risen to the challenge."We were rea l l yple as e d w hen wewe re c h o sen a sth e wi n n ers o f t hec ompet i t i o n. "HEINZ RICHARDSONDirector ofJestico & WhilesWhereitallbeganThe fundamental principles that the masterplan deliveredand that we had proposed at our very early competitionstage, remain true to this day and as we go forward intothe future as well. The materials we used, primarily brick, contribute to the warmth and humanity we’ve described.STARTINGOUT“In 2010, there was a design competition and we wereinvited to enter. We did lots of work and were really pleasedwhen we were chosen as winners of the competition. Wedeveloped the masterplan and we arestill working on it now, almost a decade later. We have a design philosophy when we are designingprimarily residential developments, such as GreenwichMillennium Village, and we put humanity andsustainability at the heart. We also like to consider that allthe layouts of the apartments and homes are thoughtful andpractical, and to give everything a sense of identity and asense of place.People that have bought homes here saw themselves verymuch as pioneers. They were pioneering the millenniumlifestyle which was putting sustainability first andincorporating nature, with the open space and Ecology Park."What we’ve built so far, has created spaces and placesthat are remarkably true to what we envisaged back in2010. The street layouts are these slightly quirky ones. It’sorganised at one level as a very simple grid with buildingsaround them, but we slightly twisted the streets so thatthe views you see are revealed as you walk through them. There’s a little bit of revelation of different angles andcorners that you see as you walk through it!The Ecology Park and the Southern Park were built in thebeginning, so the landscape has matured now, and it meansthat you are putting buildings around a landscape, ratherthan putting a landscape between buildings. As you look outto the skyline, you can see treetops, and into the distanceyou can just about see the tops of some of the buildings. Itfeels like a unique place, right in the heart of the city.”THEFUTUREEVOLVINGDESIGNS"To walk around it now and to see it coming to life and tosee people living there, making it their own, adding theirown lifestyle to it, I think is bringing the place alive andI’m really looking forward to seeing it when it’s completed."“In this particular instance, we were doing the later phasesof an earlier scheme that had been designed by RalphErskine, who had set up the vision in the early days. His vision was based very much on the integration oflandscape, humanity and human scale. So we evolvedthat into our own style in the later stages. We also have to be alert to changing lifestyles. We arealmost 20 years on from the original vision, 20 years is ageneration, so the needs in terms of all sort of things todo with more sustainable ways of living, including moresustainable ways of moving around and more sustainablelifestyles, impact on the way we design the development.PICTURED ARE JESTICO & WHILESDIRECTORS EION KEATING (LEFT)AND HEINZ RICHARDSON (RIGHT).1213
