Safety InstructionsKeep away from direct sunlight and away from chemicals. Make sure the environment does notexperience abrupt changes in temperature or humidity.Place the product right side up at all times.Do not place near any liquids.Before cleaning, unplug the power cord. Wipe with damp paper towels. Do not use chemical oraerosol cleaners.To prevent the unit from falling over, do not place on carts or any unstable surfaces.The power cord must plug in to the correct supply voltage. Make sure that the supplied AC voltage iscorrect and stable.To remove all electrical current from the device, ensure that all power cords are disconnected fromthe power source.Risk of explosion if battery is replaced with an incorrect type. Dispose of used batteries appropriately.5Chapter 1: Before You Start

ChapterHardware SetupTools and Parts for Drive Installation A screwdriver (only for 2.5" drives) At least one 3.5” or 2.5” SATA drive (please visit www.synology.com for compatible drive models)Warning: If you install a drive that contains data, the system will format the drive and erase all existing data. Pleaseback up any important data before installation.Install Drives1 Press the lower part of the hard drive tray to pop out the handle.2 Pull the hard drive tray handle in the direction as indicated below to remove the hard drive tray.62

3 Load drives in the drive trays. For 3.5” drives: Remove the fastening panels from the sides of the drive tray. Place the drive in the drivetray. Then insert the fastening panels to secure the drive in place. For 2.5” drives: Remove the fastening panels from the sides of the drive tray and store them in a safeplace. Place the drive in the blue area (shown below) of the drive tray. Turn the tray upside down and tightenthe screws to secure the drive in place.4 Insert the loaded hard drive tray into the empty hard drive bay.Note: Make sure the tray is pushed in all the way. Otherwise, the drive might not be able to function properly.5 Press the handle in flush with the front panel to hold the hard drive tray in place.7Chapter 2: Hardware Setup

6 Insert the hard drive tray key into the hard drive tray lock, turn the key clockwise (to the "I" position) to lock thehandle of the hard drive tray, and then remove the key.7 Repeat the steps above to assemble the other drives you have prepared.8 Drives are numbered as shown below.Note: If you want to create a RAID volume, we recommend that all installed drives are of the same size to make thebest use of drive capacity.Start Up Your DiskStation1 Use the LAN cable to connect the DiskStation to your switch, router or hub.8Chapter 2: Hardware Setup

2 Connect the AC adapter to the power port of the DiskStation. Connect one end of the AC power cord to the ACpower adapter, and the other to the power outlet.3 Press the power button.Congratulations! Your DiskStation is now online and detectable from a network computer.Add a Memory Module on DiskStationThe optional Synology memory module is designed for DiskStation memory expansion. Follow the steps below toinstall, check, or remove a memory module on your DiskStation.To install a memory module:1 Shut down your DiskStation. Disconnect all cables connected to your DiskStation to prevent any possibledamages.2 The memory slots are located on the inner right side of your DiskStation.3 Remove the two hard drive trays from the two drive bays. You will see one empty module slot for memoryexpansion.9Chapter 2: Hardware Setup

Important:1. When you remove the drive trays, you expose sensitive internal components. Avoid touching anything other thanthe memory assembly when you remove or add a memory module.2. Do not remove the pre-installed memory module to prevent voiding product warranty.4 Insert the new memory module into the empty slot:a Align the notch on the gold contacts of the memory module with the notch on the empty slot. Insert thememory module into the slot. Make sure the module is properly inserted.b Push down on the memory module with moderate pressure until you hear a click.l ctcerrocImportant: Hold the memory module by its edge, and do not touch the gold contacts.Note: Synology will not provide complete product warranty or technical support if a non-Synology memory module isused for memory upgrade.5 Insert the two hard drive trays back into the hard drive bays.6 Reconnect the cables you removed in step 1, and then press and hold the power button to turn on yourDiskStation.To make sure DiskStation recognizes the new memory capacity:1 Install DiskStation Manager (DSM). Please see the next chapter for more information.2 Log into DSM as admin or a user belonging to the administrators group.3 Check Total Physical Memory in Control Panel Info Center.If your DiskStation does not recognize the memory or does not start up successfully, please make sure that thememory module is installed correctly.To remove the memory module:1 Follow step 1 and 2 of the "To install a memory module" section to shut down your DiskStation, disconnect thecables, and then remove the two hard drive trays.2 Push the levers on both sides of the memory module outward. The memory module will be released from theslot.10Chapter 2: Hardware Setup

3 Hold the memory module by its notches and remove it from the slot.4 Insert the hard drive trays back into the hard drive bays.5 Reconnect the cables removed in step 1. Now you may turn on your DiskStation.11Chapter 2: Hardware Setup

ChapterInstall DSM on DiskStationAfter hardware setup is finished, please install DiskStation Manager (DSM) – Synology’s browser-basedoperating system – on your DiskStation.Install DSM with Web AssistantYour DiskStation comes with a built-in tool called Web Assistant that helps you download the latest version ofDSM from the Internet and install it on your DiskStation. To use Web Assistant, please follow the steps below.1 Power on the DiskStation.2 Open a web browser on a computer connected to the same network as the DiskStation.3 Enter either of the following into the address bar of your browser:a find.synology.comb diskstation:50004 Web Assistant will be launched in your web browser. It will search for and find the DiskStation within the localnetwork. The status of the DiskStation should be Not Installed.5 Click Connect to start the setup process and follow the onscreen instructions.Note:1. The DiskStation must be connected to the Internet to install DSM with Web Assistant.2. Suggested browsers: Chrome, Firefox.3. The arbitration award shall be final and binding onthe parties and may be enforced in any court havingjurisdiction. You understand that, in the absence of thisprovision, you would have had a right to litigate any suchdispute, controversy or claim in a court, including the right tolitigate claims on a class-wide or class-action basis, and youexpressly and knowingly waives those rights and agrees toresolve any disputes through binding arbitration inaccordance with the provisions of this Section 18. In such event,you must cease use of the Software and destroy all copies ofthe Software and all of its component parts.Section 19. Attorneys' Fees. In any arbitration, mediation,or other legal action or proceeding to enforce rights orremedies under this EULA, the prevailing party will beentitled to recover, in addition to any other relief to which itmay be entitled, costs and reasonable attorneys' fees.Section 16. Assignment. You may not transfer or assignyour rights under this EULA to any third party, except for thatpre-installed in the Products. Any such transfer orassignment in violation of the foregoing restriction will bevoid.Section 20. Severability. (3) "Category IIIProduct" means Synology product models that apply with thefollowing requirements: all DS NAS models without theXS /XS suffix and with 5 and more drive bays in or after 12series, all RS NAS models without the XS /XS suffix in orafter 12-series, and all DX/RX expansion units with 4 or 5drive bays in or after 12-series. (4) "Category IV Product"means all other Synology product models purchased byCustomer after March 1, 2008. (5) "Category V Product"means all other Synology product models purchased byCustomer before February 29, 2008. (b) "RefurbishedProduct" means all Synology products which have beenrefurbished and sold directly by Synology through OnlineStore, not including those sold by an authorized Synologydistributor or reseller. (c) "Customer" means the originalperson or entity purchasing the Product from Synology or anauthorized Synology distributor or reseller. (d) "Online Store"means an online shop operated by Synology or Synology’saffiliate. (e) "Product" means a New Product or aRefurbished Product and any hardware incorporated into theProduct by Synology and any accompanying documentation.(f) "Software" means the Synology proprietary software thataccompanies the Product when purchased by Customer, isdownloaded by Customer at the Web Site, or is pre-installedon the Product by Synology, and includes any firmware,associated media, images, animations, video, audio, textand applets incorporated into the software or Product andany updates or upgrades to such software. (g) "WarrantyPeriod" means the period commencing on the date theProduct is purchased by Customer and ending (1) five yearsafter such date for Category I Products; (2) three years aftersuch date for Category II & lll Products; or (3) two years aftersuch date for Category IV Products; or (4) one year aftersuch date for Category V Products; or (5) 90 days after suchdate for Refurbished Products, except for those sold as "asis" or with "no warranty" on Online Store. If Customer gives notice ofnoncompliance with any of the warranties set forth inSection 2.1 within the applicable Warranty Period in themanner set forth below, then, upon verification of thenoncompliance by Synology, Synology will, at Synology'soption: (a) use commercially reasonable efforts to repair theProduct, or (b) replace the noncomplying Product or partthereof upon return of the complete Product in accordancewith Section 2.3 The foregoing sets forth Synology's entireliability and Customer's sole and exclusive remedy for anybreach of warranty under Section 2.1 or any other defect ordeficiency in the Product. Customer will reasonably assistSynology to diagnose and validate any nonconformity withthe Product. The warranty set forth in Section 2.1 does notinclude: (1) any warranty relating to the Software;(2) physical installation or removal of the Product fromCustomer's site; (3) visits to Customer's site; (4) labornecessary to effect repairs or replace defective parts otherthan during Synology's or its contracted service providers'normal local business hours, exclusive of weekends andservice providers’ holidays; (5) any work with any third partyequipment or software; (6) any warranty of the hard disk ifinstalled by Customer or any other third party; or (7) anywarranty of compatibility with the hard disk.2.3Return. Any Product returned by Customer underSection 2.2 must be assigned a Return MerchandiseAuthorization ("RMA") number by Synology before shipmentand must be returned in accordance with Synology's thencurrent RMA procedures.Customer may contact anyauthorized Synology distributor or reseller or SynologySupport to obtain assistance in obtaining an RMA, and mustprovide proof of purchase and product serial number whenasking for such assistance. For warranty claims, Customermust return the complete Product to Synology in accordancewith this Section 2.3 to be eligible for coverage under thisWarranty. Any Product returned without an RMA number, orany Product that has been disassembled (except under thedirection of Synology) will be refused and returned toCustomer at Customer's expense. Any Product that hasbeen assigned a RMA number must be returned in the samecondition as it was received from Synology to the addressdesignated by Synology, freight pre-paid, in packagingsufficient to protect the contents thereof and with the RMAnumber prominently displayed on the outside of the box.Customer is responsible for insurance and risk of loss withrespect to returned items until they are properly received bySynology. A Product issued a RMA number must bereturned within fifteen (15) days after issuance of theapplicable RMA number.2.4Replacement by Synology.
