He sticks the nasal hair trimmer into his nose andbegins to use it.ChrMARTIN now has a face full of shaving foam as he carefullyshaves with a steel sharp-looking razor.MARTIN (V.O.)Simply put, the reason why I wantto die is because I don’t want tolive. He picks it up and thinks - he puts it back on themantelpiece.7LaMartin steps out of his apartment block. A nice apartmentblock. He thinks and then returns back into it. We staylooking at the door.istineMARTIN (V.O.)Imagine you’re an - assistant bankmanager in Guildford offered thejob of managing a bank in Sydney.Well, even though it’s a prettystraightforward decision you’dstill think for a bit. He takes a toffee from his glovecompartment and shoves it into his mouth.nganMARTIN (V.O.)Now I’m not an assistant bankmanager, I haven’t got agedparents, they’re dead, I don’t playgolf, I hate the sport.He backs it out of the drive. He drives down the street.LaMARTIN (V.O.)But eighteen months ago I hadeverything and then - I metDanielle Thurby.tineHe passes a woman he knows who is wearing devil horns and anembarrassed grin. She smiles. And mouths ‘Happy New Year’. Hewaves.ChrisMARTIN (V.O.)Five feet nine inches. thirty-sixdouble-D. Fifteen years, twohundred and fifty days old and yetshe looked twenty-five if a day. Ididn’t even enjoy it. Her. It.10EXT. TOPPERS CAR PARK. NIGHT10MARTIN parks up the car beside an office block which seems toascend into the sky - this is Toppers Tower. He gets out ofhis car, looks up at the looming building for the briefest ofseconds, and then starts to unlash his ladder.MARTIN (V.O.)And now my wife hates me, I can’tsee my kids, I’ve a criminalrecord, a listing on the nationalsex offenders register and have sospectacularly pissed away my careerthat I’m less successful than anassistant bank manager inGuildford.Yup. Suicide is mySydney.

4.He puts the ladder beside the car. He takes a bolt cutter anda torch out of the boot. He clips it on a buckle to histrouser belt. He puts the bolt cutter into his back pocketwhere it sticks out precariously.MARTIN (V.O.)No offence intended to the goodpeople of Sydney of course.INT. TOPPERS TOWER. NIGHT11-07511MARTIN is waiting for the lift, it arrives. He attempts toput his ladder inside. It doesn’t fit.12anHe tries it another way. It doesn’t fit. He tries it athird way. Yup. Really doesn’t fit.INT. TOPPERS TOWER. STAIRCASE. NIGHT1213LangMARTIN takes the stairs, carrying the ladder, the torchbanging against his leg with every step. He looks up thestaircase. Only fourteen more flights to go. Only - fourteen fourteen - exhaustion awaits.INT. TOPPERS TOWER. TOP OF STAIRCASE. NIGHT13tineThe door is bolted. MARTIN is seriously out of breath.isMARTIN takes out the bolt cutter. He makes to break open thebolt. But the bolt has already been got to and slithers awayas soon as he touches it. The door swings open effortlessly.ChrMARTIN puts his bolt cutter back in his back pocket. Then hethinks better of it and takes the bolt cutter out of hispocket and throws it on the floor. He won’t be needing thatagain.He takes a breath and then walks out through the open door.14EXT. TOPPERS TOWER ROOF. NIGHTThe roof has three feet of barbed wire netting around theoutside of it, with a metal strut at the edge of the wire.MARTIN lays his ladder horizontally so that it traversesthe barbed wire. He takes out a cigar. He tucks it behindhis ear.He puts the torch in his mouth and begins to crawl out onhis ladder. Over the wire. It’s a horrific and vertigoinducing watch.He wobbles at one point, and clings on, then he steelshimself and keeps going. He reaches the end.14

5.He carefully manoeuvres himself into seated position. Herefocuses himself.He sits as if on the edge of the world, he puts the torch onhis lap, he doesn’t look down - instead - he takes the cigarfrom behind his ear and lights it.MAUREEN (O.S.)Um. Excuse me.-075MARTIN turns and looks at MAUREEN, astonished there issomeone else up there with him. MAUREEN is 40-something, andhas a brave, anxious, smile on her face.MARTINngWhat?anMAUREEN (CONT’D)I’m not entirely sure how tophrase this. But. Are you goingto be long?LaMAUREENI wasn’t sure whether to wait myturn or.I hadn’t consideredthe wire. I’d really like toborrow your ladder. If that’s.eThere is a moment’s pause.istinMAUREEN (CONT’D)Maybe I should just wait. I’llwait.MARTINChrRight.MAUREENSorry.MARTINNo. No.MARTIN turns back to facing the night sky, frowns and turnsback to MAUREEN, his concentration gone.MARTIN (CONT’D)You’re just going to stand thereand watch are you?MAUREENNo. No. Of course. You’ll bewanting to do it on your own I’dimagine.MARTINYou’d imagine right.

6.MAUREENI’ll go over there.She indicates the door. She begins to walk over to it. Hehalf laughs.MARTINI’ll give you a shout on the waydown.-075MAUREEN attempts half a smile.MAUREENRight.MAUREEN stands quietly - looking towards MARTIN and thenturns around. He checks what’s she doing and then.nganHe composes himself. He feels the mood take him. He takes apuff of his cigar. He looks out forward, maybe he evenlifts himself up ready to propel himself out.EXT. TOPPERS TOWER. NIGHT15e15LaAnd then he drops the cigar - from his mouth. And thenreaches out to grab it and in doing so almost overbalancesover the edge of the tower. Fuck. It’s a long way down. Hegrabs the edge and regains his balance.EXT. STREET. NIGHT16hr16istinThe cigar tumbles down the side of the building and we gowith it. Turning in the night air, our stomachs lurching. Thedrop is further and faster than we’d ever have anticipated.CThe cigar lands with a bounce. Then it lies still. Then atruck roars over the top of it.The camera closes on a cigar lying brutally flattened on theroad.17EXT. TOPPERS TOWER ROOF. NIGHT17MARTIN wobbles, he looks down. He points the torch down. Hecan’t see the drop. He thinks. He thinks again. He looksdown. He announces.MARTINI can’t. Not with you watching.MAUREENOh.He looks at her, she looks at him.

7.MAUREEN (CONT’D)I could leave, come back intwenty minutes.MARTIN thinks and then frowns.MARTINMaybe you should go first?MAUREEN registers this.MAUREENI’d - want to be on my own.Completely. On my own.-075She thinks. She turns thoughts over in her head.ngMAUREEN thinks and then nods.anMARTINUnderstood. Twenty minutes. Then Iwant my spot back.MAUREENLaRight. OK.He thinks and then starts crawling back along the ladder.tineThe ladder wobbles again. MARTIN’s survival instinct comesin again - he lies still a moment. He looks at MAUREEN. Sheputs out a hand.MAUREEN (CONT’D)isMaureen.ChrMARTIN stands. They shake hands.MARTINMartin.MAUREENAre you from. I recognise yourface.?MARTINDo you?They realise they’re still shaking hands. They stop.MAUREENWere you married to someone in apop group?MARTINNo.MAUREEN remembers.

8.MAUREENWere you on TV?She thinks. Slightly excited now.MAUREEN (CONT’D)Mushrooms. You like mushrooms.MARTINMushrooms?an-075MAUREENYou said. I remember. There was oneof those chefs in the studio moustache - and he gave yousomething to taste and you said‘Mmmm, I love mushrooms, I couldeat them all day.’ Was that you?MARTIN digests this.ngMARTINMaureen. Perhaps now’s not the timefor small talk.LaMAUREEN smiles at MARTIN. She looks at the ladder. She knowswhat this means.tineMAUREENWell. I’ll.um.isMARTINYes.I’ll just - leave you for -ChrWhich is when they hear a door bang behind them. JESS, 18,stands with mascara running down her cheeks. She is dressedfor a New Year’s Eve party, high heels, the works. She looksat the two of them - confused.She sees the ladder, she frowns, and then she starts runninghard for it. She almost makes it.But MARTIN grabs her by her belt. She kicks him in theface, but he hangs on and pulls her backwards onto theroof.JESSNo. No!He is really having trouble keeping hold of her.MARTINCalm down. Calm down.She wriggles away. She makes for the ladder again, thistime he full on rugby tackles her. They fall to the groundwith an oooof.

9.JESSWho the fuck are you?JESS tries to stick her fingers into MARTIN’s eyes. She iswild on something.MARTINOw! Maureen. Bit of help.-075JESSYou’re getting a thrill out ofthis aren’t you - pervert!The struggle continues, MAUREEN is anxious not tointervene.anMAUREENWhat do you want me.to do?JESS looks up at MARTIN. She recognises him.ngJESSOh my God. You’re Martin Sharp. Youare a pervert. Officially.LaMAUREENThat’s it! Rise and Shine withMartin and Penny.tineMARTINSit on her will you?isMAUREEN hesitates, and then sits on Jess, and MARTIN kneelson her arms.hrJESSJust let me go. Let me go.CMARTIN turns and looks at her, amazed at her balls. Then aphone begins to ring.And they look to their own phones. MARTIN stands, MAUREENstands, JESS stands. And they look at each other. It’s nottheir phones ringing.The phone continues to ring. MARTIN flashes his torch aroundthe roof looking for the culprit. It alights on.JJ - he issitting cross-legged on the opposite edge of the tower block.He’s wearing a crash helmet and he has an insulated pizza bagon his lap with ‘Paulo’s Pizzas’ printed on it.JJHi.He talks with an American accent. They all stare at him. Hethinks and then takes off his helmet - he’s mid-20’s, shylooking. He shuts off his phone and smiles - unsure.

10.JJ (CONT’D)Any of you guys order a pizza?MARTINHow long - have you been - there?JJI don’t - know.JESS starts to laugh.-075JESSWell if you’re here for the deathride .there’s a queue.EXT. TOPPERS TOWER ROOF. NIGHTLaThey are in exactly the same positions. JESS grins as shelooks at the other three.tineJESSSo do we do introductions.? I’mJess. 11.No-one says anything. JESS thinks and then takes the pizzafrom JJ and opens the box. She grins at the contents. Sheseems to be enjoying herself. None of the others are.JESS (CONT’D)Ham and Pineapple? Really? And it’scold. No-one fancies jumping downand getting some pepperoni do they?-075No-one laughs. No-one says anything. JESS looks at them alland begins to eat.JESS (CONT’D)No-one fancies a slice?. What? Notgoing to deliver it now is he?MAUREEN looks at MARTIN and then JJ.ngJJ looks at MAUREEN. Thinking.anMAUREENThis.this feels wrong.LaJESSMaybe we could jumptogether.One. Two. Three.tineShe makes for the ladder. But MARTIN isit out of the way. It falls through theheavily to the ground far below. MARTINit.anxiously. It lands with a distantblares. JESS laughs.too quick and kickswire and descendswatchessmash - a car alarmisThen suddenly it begins to rain. They wait. Looking at eachother.ChrMARTIN looks up at the skies. He thinks.MARTINNice to meet you - all.He exits the rooftop. He leaves everyone else behind.The remaining three exchange a look - unsure what to do withthemselves - and the rain gets heavier still.19INT. MARTIN’S CAR. NIGHT19MARTIN sits looking numb. He’s numb with shock. His skin hasa greyish pallor to it.The rain drums incessantly on the windscreen. He turns on theradio. He turns it off again. He turns on the windscreenwipers - but they’re slightly broken - there’s a weird pausein the middle of their rotation - oh, and they squeak.

12.MARTIN just looks at the world. And then - suddenly - hehammers the steering wheel with his hand. And then he regretshammering the steering wheel. This is both raw pain and, youknow, slightly pathetic.MARTIN starts the car. He begins to drive.He drives past MAUREEN standing in the rain at a bus stop.She disrupts the thought.20-075He thinks. He stops the car. He looks back at her. Hereverses it back.EXT. STREET. NIGHT20anMAUREEN is standing fastening a carrier bag onto her head asa make-shift hood.ngMARTIN (O.S.)Do you want a lift?LaMAUREENNo. No. The bus will be along in fifteen minutes.MARTIN looks at her gruffly.tineMARTINGet in the car Maureen.21isMAUREEN thinks and then does.INT. MARTIN’S CAR. NIGHT21ChrMAUREEN looks around and smiles at MARTIN, they’re stillnervous of each other.MAUREENI did like your television show.MARTIN doesn’t answer, they lapse back into silence.They drive past JJ - trying to get a Pizza moped started inthe rain. MAUREEN looks at JJ. MARTIN looks at MAUREEN.MARTIN stops the car.MARTINTonight is really not going how Iexpected.22EXT. STREET. NIGHT22MARTIN drives past JESS. Who is walking purposively along thestreet.

13.MARTIN’s car stops. JESS runs to the car and then looksinside.JESSBit early for a reunion isn’t it?MARTINGet in. We’re taking you home.23-075INT. MARTIN’S CAR.
