Together, through Operation Taghoy, we areMending Faces One Child at a Time.2013 Mission Provides Record Number of SurgeriesUplift Internationale’s Operation Taghoy-2013conducted the mission from February 1st to 10th. Theproject activities were performed at the Siargao DistrictHospital on Siargao, a small island off the northeastcoast of the big island of Mindanao and home to40,000 inhabitants. The Mission Team accomplisheda record 115 surgery procedures during the eightdays of activities; some of the children had ferriedfrom adjacent islands to receive the mending care.The 40-member volunteer Mission Team wasrecruited from Colorado, New York, Arizona, NewMexico, Florida, Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, Iowaas well as China and the Philippines. Memberswere accommodated in housing facilities of adjacentcommunities that, during the autumn of the year, hostparticipants of the well-known annual InternationalMen’s Surfing Competition events.Myroslav Harasym, M.D., Sally Capoot, R.N.,Victor Comahig, R.N., and Chloe Digal, M.D.of Dapa, and the Hospital Chief, Dr. Digal, for their supportand hospitality were invaluable. Also, the Rotary Club ofSurigao, by willingly extending Operation Taghoy theirbacking offshore, UI is thankful.To Dr. Myroslav Harasym, anesthesiologist, and wifeMeriam Dominos go UI’s special thanks. They initiallyintroduced the Emissary Team to Meriam’s beautifulhome island and their important officials, months earlier;coordinated the multiple requisite logistical preparationsfor the mission, including the recruitment of a plethora ofchildren in need of the mending care; and, helped organizethe OR and its associated equipment and supplies. UI Welcomes our New President-ElectSteve Krebs, M.D. – President ElectDoctor Steve Krebs is a Colorado native and a graduate of the Eastern Virginia Medical School. He practicesas a primary care Internist and serves as the CEO of Wheat Ridge Internal Medicine. He is also the ChiefMedical Officer at Correctional Health Partners and Physician Health Partners. Steve has served on numerousboards and is actively involved as a clinical instructor.Steve’s first mission with Uplift Internationale was in 2010. For the 2012 and 2013 mission, he was appointedas the Head of Mission. He and his wife Ellen have three daughters and all enjoy running in their free time.Steve says: “I could not be more excited to have been picked to help guide Uplift Internationale into its nextgreat phase. Frankly I’m awed by what Jaime has set in motion with little more than vision and the desire tohelp others. The mark of a truly great leader is that the organization they set in motion continues to exceleven once they step down. UI is exactly that sort of organization and I’m confident that, with the involvementof a truly passionate board, UI will continue to thrive and honor Jaime’s vision for years to come.”New Board Members – The UI Board Welcomes the Following New Board Members:Edith Pasion, R.N., M.S.N.Richard Hendershot, M.D.Edith Pasion was born and raisedin the Philippines. She obtaineda Bachelor of Science in NursingDegree from the University of SantoTomas in Manila. Right after, sheimmigrated to Kansas City, Missouri,married, and thereafter moved toColorado. She and her husband,Wilbert, have been married thirtyyears and have two children, Ericand Jessica.Edith has been working at IntensiveCare Unit of Saint Joseph Hospital as a Staff Nurse and ClinicalScholar since moving to Colorado. She obtained her Master ofScience in Nursing: Leadership in the Health Care System atRegis University.Edith has assumed leadership positions in several FilipinoAmerican and Asian Pacific organizations in the Metro Denverarea; is a past president of the Philippine American Society ofColorado (PASCO), past Co-Chair of the Aurora Asian PacificCommunity Partnership; and, a founding president of thePhilippine Nurses Association of Colorado. Her involvementwith Uplift Internationale started when she was president ofPASCO, assisting with providing cultural presentations duringfundraising events and promoting Uplift Internationale amongthe membership of the Filipino-American and Asian Pacificorganizations. Prior to being a Board Member, Edith was partof the Circle of Advisors and medical mission volunteer. Edithsays: “providing excellent care to the poor children of the ruralPhilippines, that is what UI believes and delivers!”Dr. Richard Hendershot is agraduate of Ohio State UniversityCollege of Medicine. He receivedhis training as an anesthesiologistin the United States Navy andsubspecialty training in pediatricanesthesiology and critical care atChildren’s Hospital of Philadelphia.He practiced and taught pediatricanesthesiology in both academicand private settings, most recentlyat Children’s Hospital Colorado andthe University of Colorado. After almost 40 years of activepractice he retired in 2011.Continuing an interest in providing medical care tounderserved children, he joined Uplift Internationale. Asa Board member, his emphasis will be on overseeing therecruitment of anesthesiologists and ensuring that adequateanesthesia equipment and supplies are available to allow forthe successful completion of the annual medical mission to thePhilippines. He participated at the 2013 mission at Siargao.He and his wife Sandy have two children and fourgrandchildren and enjoy living in Colorado. Richard says: “tohave the opportunity to make an improvement in the lives ofchildren and their family is a privilege and a blessing.”Mary McNelis, R.N.Mary McNelis was born andraised in Ireland and has travelledextensively through Asia, MiddleEast and Europe working as anurse. She came to America in1996 and currently works as theER Nursing Supervisor at ExemplaLutheran Medical Center. Prior toher role, she worked as a flightnurse for 15 years.Mary started fundraising at the ageof 6 with her parents and she hasconsistently played a role in different charities since childhood.She will be actively involved with Uplift Internationalefundraising projects as this year’s Chair, Gala Committee. Shehas been on two Operation Taghoy missions and is lookingforward to future missions. Mary is excited to join the board toshare the dream of “mending faces one child at a time.”Brett ScottBrett currently works in the MedicalIT field in Denver, Colorado. He wenton his first UI mission in 2012 andjust returned from the 2013 mission.Brett served in a photographyand IT role on the mission andlooks forward to updating the UIwebsite, blog, photography andvideography, and social media. Bretthas also worked as a professionalphotographer shooting landscapeand real estate in Aspen and Vail.Brett, eager to share his talent and enthusiasm, says: “I’m sohappy to be part of Uplift and the Board!”3

Rotary Foundation Receives Matching Grant Application to Benefit UI“On approval of the Matching Grant (MG), the lead Rotary Club (RC) will be remitted the monies UpliftInternationale (UI) can thereafter request the needed funds for the purpose of acquiring the prescribed listof equipment with an estimated total value of Fifty-Thousand Dollars ” so did Dan Hershberger inform hisfellow members of the UI Board of Directors. He continued, “the Rotary Foundation (RF) acknowledgedreceipt of the Matching Grant (MG) submission by RCs of the Philippines and Colorado.”Acquisition of the surgical and monitoring equipment is regarded to augment the operative capability ofthe project Operation Taghoy and, importantly, equip the formative community-based Taghoy Facial CleftClinics that UI advocates as a “sharing ownership” opportunity for Filipino healthcare volunteers to provide the mendingcare to their brothers and sisters.The MG is a cooperative undertaking of an international group of RC donor participants. From Colorado’s Rotary District#5450, they are the Wheat Ridge, Arvada, Arvada Sunrise, Westminster 7:10, and Commerce City. Importantly, the donationsby Philippine Rotary Clubs of Districts #3230, 3850 and 3860 qualified them as the host Clubs. They are the Makati,Forbes Park, Central Iloilo City, Bacolod North, Tagbilaran and, serving as the Lead Club, Cebu Fort San Pedro. Dan, also anAssistant Governor of District #5450, serving as the liaison between the Clubs was assisted by UI Circle of Advisor MartinPostma who added his personal donation to the MG.
