PopeFrancis calls Palm Sunday “bittersweet,” a combination of both joy and sorrow. We rejoice inthe cries of “Hosanna!” greeting Jesus as Hetriumphantly arrives in Jerusalem. Yet, just a fewdays later, in this same city, He is nailed to thecross, suffers and dies for our sins.Father Francis Fernandez, author of the excellent In Conversation withGod book series, writes that the arrival of Jesus in Jerusalem “asks forloyalty and perseverance from each one of us, it calls us to deepen in ourfaithfulness, and for our resolution to be more than just bright lights thatsparkle for a moment and then fade away .if we wish to possess thedivine life and triumph with Christ, we need to be constant and throughpenance deaden within us anything that separates us from God andprevents us from following Our Lord unto the Cross.” In Conversation withGod, Vol. 2, page 275.On Thursday evening we begin the Sacred Pascal Triduum, an intensetime of preparation for Easter, bringing Lent to its climax. We will observethe Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday at 7:30 p.m. on April 1;the Solemn Liturgy of the Lord’s Passion at 3 p.m. on Good Friday,April 2 and the Solemn Easter Vigil at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 3.These three liturgies are not isolated events. Rather, they comprise onesaving mystery allowing us to live in the ever-present reality of our Lord’slast supper, passion, death and resurrection. For this reason, the Mass ofthe Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday does not end with a final blessing. We are left to wait a bit longer until that blessing is given at the conclusionof the Easter Vigil.I encourage you to participate in the beautiful liturgies of Holy Week withus here at the Basilica of Saint Mary, either in person or via onlinelivestreaming. Please see page 5 and our website for details.A VERY SUCCESSFUL PARISH MISSION!My thanks to everyone who made our recent parish mission a tremendous success as we focused on Saint Joseph as Guardian of theRedeemer and the Holy Family.First, of course, all of us thank Father Wade Menezes of the Fathers ofMercy for leading the four-day mission, helping us to “work out our salvation under the tutelage of Saint Joseph.” Father Wade’s talks and homilies at Mass provided us with a lot of food for thought. Also many thanksto all of our wonderful Basilica staff for spearheading the logistics for theweek, especially Alex Solsma, our Director of Communications andEvangelization, and Elena Otero-Bigg, Assistant to the Rector. And, thank you to those in the parish and beyond who took part in themission — an average of more than 700 in person and via livestreameach day! What a wonderful way to honor the foster father of the Son ofGod and reflect on ways we can emulate Saint Joseph in our own lives.

"There is nomention of 'one' in the Latin . Therefore, the correct translation . is simply ‘in the unity ofthe Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever,’" the memo said. The also memo noted that English translations of the Roman Missal for use by Catholicsprior to the Second Vatican Council, such the Saint Joseph's Missal of the 1950s, "reflected thecorrect translation." However, when the post-conciliar texts were published in English, theword “one” was added. The correct translation was already reflected in the Roman Missal inother languages, including the USCCB's Spanish translation of the missal. The translationchange — "God, for ever and ever" — also applies to other liturgical books, such as the Liturgyof the Hours. Publishers are being informed of this change so reprints or new editions of theRoman Missal will reflect the new translation, as will any worship aids for the faithful andother similar publications.

The Basilica of Saint Mary Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord March 28, 2021 Page NineAROUND OUR PARISH & BEYONDFROM THE ARCHIVESA periodic look at the historyof our Basilica of Saint Mary parishsince its founding in 1795.FATHER KROES& CIVIL WAR ALLEGIANCE TO THE NORTHDuring the Civil War, Alexandria was considered a Southern city and was occupied by Union troops. While there were no military battles in the city, there were a few minor skirmishes involving Saint Mary’sparishioners, their pastor Father Peter Kroes SJ and Union rules. Especially contentious was a Unionrequirement for citizens – including church leaders and their congregants – to swear allegiance to the Northand offer a required prayer for the President of the United States.Churches whose members ignored the required prayer for the President were closed byUnion forces. Saint Paul Episcopal, our neighbor on South Pitt Street, suffered thisindignity. Christ Church on North Washington was allowed to remain open because ithad been George Washington’s parish and only Union chaplains conducted servicesthere. Saint Mary church remained open throughout the war because of the large number of Irish Catholic Union soldiers who attended Mass. Although Father Kroes wasin sympathy with his Southern congregation, he did have a good, protective relationship with at least one of the Union chaplains. That friendship lasted long after the warwith the Union chaplain visiting him years later. However, in February 1862, some “Orangemen” (Irish Protestants from Ulster) froman Illinois regiment threatened to burn Saint Mary to the ground and arrest any priestwho did not say the prescribed prayer. An Irish Catholic regiment learned of their plan. When the Orangemen were about to order the arrest of Father Kroes, “the measured tramp of soldiers was heard at the doorof the church. Soon they were marching down the aisles, and to the relief of the Catholic congregation, knelt down and blessed themselves.” (From The Woodstock Letters 14, 1885, 253)Father KroesFather Kroes was at one point firmly instructed to take the oath of allegiance to the Union. When he refused, he was prohibited from performing marriages in Alexandria. He complied with the letter of the law,but in his own way. It is said that on more than one occasion, Father creatively officiated at marriage ceremonies aboard a ferry off shore from Alexandria on the Potomac River, which is actually part of Maryland.Or he sent the couple into Washington to wed.— Kitty Guy, Parish Historian2021 BISHOP'S LENTEN APPEALUPDATE!As of March 18, the Basilica of Saint Maryreached 82% of its 700,000 BLA 2021 goal.If you have not yet done so, please prayerfullyconsider making a pledge to this appeal thatfunds important programs and ministriesserving thousands of people in our Diocese.Help us reach our goal by donating atwww.stmaryoldtown.org/BLA2021or text BLA to 703.260.9800FORMED: A FREE, comprehensive, onlinelibrary of Catholic resources for ongoing faithformation is available to Saint Mary parishioners athttps:stmaryoldtown.formed.orgADVERTISER OF THE WEEK!Many thanks to THE IRISH PLUMBER, INC.for advertising in our parish bulletin. Please support and patronizeour wonderful advertisers!
