CHAPTER- IGENERAL INFORMATION1.1Historical BackgroundDr. Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, Solan,stwas established on 1 December, 1985 with the objective to promote education, research andextension education in the fields of horticulture, forestry and allied disciplines. Late Dr.Yashwant Singh Parmar, the 1st Chief Minister and the architect of Himachal Pradeshperceived the importance of horticulture and forestry to develop and improve the Stateeconomy which led to the establishment of this University. Its history lies in erstwhileHimachal Agricultural College, Solan, established in 1962 and affiliated to the PanjabUniversity, Chandigarh. It became one of the Agriculture campus of Himachal PradeshUniversity, Shimla on its formation in 1970. Consequent upon the establishment of HimachalPradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya, Palampur in 1978, this campus became its HorticultureComplex and finally in 1985, assumed the status of a State University, being the onlyUniversity in the country engaged exclusively in teaching, research and extension inhorticulture and forestry.The University is located at Nauni in Solan district of Himachal Pradesh, 13 km fromSolan on Solan-Rajgarh road, at an elevation of 1300 metres above mean sea level. Solantown is situated on national highway and is well connected by train and bus services.The University has four constituent colleges, out of which, two are located at the maincampus at Nauni, one for horticulture and the other for forestry, having 9 and 7 departments,respectively. The third college i.e. College of Horticulture & Forestry is located at Neri inHamirpur District in the link road on Nadaun-Hamirpur state highway, about 9 Km fromHamirpur town and is well connected with bus service. The college offers threeUndergraduate Degree Programmes i.e. BSc (Hons.) Horticulture, BSc (Hons.) Forestry andB Tech Biotechnology and MSc degree programme in a few subjects. The University, hasestablished a new college named College of Horticulture and Centre of Excellence forHorticulture Research & Extension, Mandi (Thunag). This college offers BSc (Hons.)Horticulture degree programme since 2019 and will also start B Sc (Hons) Forestry from thisAcademic Session. In addition, there are five Regional Research Stations, 12 SatelliteStations and five Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) situated in different zones of the State.1.2.System of EducationThe University follows the semester system of education which requires continuoushard work and regularity on the part of the students in the classes throughout the semester.The education aims at an all-round development of the student for which Universityprovides all necessary facilities. Emphasis is laid on the high academic standards anddiscipline. The University also provides facilities for different games and sports, NCC/ NSSand other co-curricular activities (literary, cultural, hobby development, etc.). These activitiesare looked after by the Students’ Welfare Organization.1.3.Faculty and Infrastructure1.3.1 FacultyThe University has a faculty of 230 teachers/ scientists catering to the needs ofteaching, research and extension education activities.5 Page

1.3.2 Laboratories & Research FarmsThe Colleges have well equipped laboratories and class rooms with state of artinstruments and teaching aids. Separate laboratories for conducting undergraduate practicalsare available, besides postgraduate laboratories catering to latest research. Being farmUniversity, it has a vast experimental area at main campus of about 550 hectare provided withmodern facilities like polyhouses, glass houses, mist chambers, sprinklers/ drip irrigationsystem, precision farming etc. Besides, herbal garden and demonstration areas like modelfarm serve as effective live tools for easy learning.1.3.3 Satyanand Stokes LibraryThe University library named after Satyanand Stokes which has the credit of beingpioneer in introducing latest information technology to automate library services. It initiatedthe computerized operations as early as in April 1989 and its whole collection has beencomputerized for electronic retrieval by creating in-house databases. It has been providingaccess to national and international databases available on CD-ROM and its online catalogueis electronically accessible. It is the first SAU library in the country which has beenconverted into a Wi-Fi Library in the year 2003-04. The scientists/ teachers and studentshave been given electronic access to 2000 plus e-journals through CERA: Consortium for eResources in Agriculture. Besides this 120 journals are subscribed in hard copy form. Allthe PhD Theses with effect from 2000 onwards have been digitized under the ICAR KrishiPrabha Project and are available on-line. The Library is centrally located and housed in abeautiful building that offers excellent environment for study. The library has a uniquecollection of 70,000 books in the field of Horticulture, Forestry and allied subjects. Forlinking the Regional Research Stations of the University with the library, the connectivityfacilities have been established in all the Regional Stations of the University so that thescientist/ staff working there can access the latest information and be in a position tocommunicate fast through E-mail. The library offers PGS-501 course ‘Library andInformation Services’ of 0 1 credit hours to MSc and PhD students.1.3.4Computer Centre and Information NetworkThe University has a separate Computer Centre which provides informationtechnology facilities to all staff and students besides connectivity to National Network underAgricultural Research Information System (ARIS) of ICAR. All academic departments andoffices within the campus have connectivity through Local Area Network for resourcesharing and exchange of information. It is on global network through Internet and E-mailfacilities. In addition, each college has full-fledged “Education Technology Cell” providingfree service to all the students.1.3.5Students Welfare ActivitiesThe Students’ Welfare Organization of the University attends to the residentialrequirements, sports, cultural/ co-curricular activities, NCC/ NSS and medical care of thestudents.1.3.5.1. HostelsThe University has 15 hostels at the main campus comprising five for boys, nine forgirls and one international hostel for foreign national students. Each hostel has a commonroom equipped with TV, facilities for indoor games and a badminton court. Importantnewspapers and magazines are also subscribed for general reading of the students. The6 Page

accommodation in the hostels is being allotted purely on the basis of merit subject to itsavailability.1.3.5.2. Other Welfare ActivitiesThe University has a placement cell for career counselling and a big playgroundwhere facilities for outdoor games and sports exist alongwith one gymnasium. Dr. L.S. NegiAuditorium serves as a facility for various students’ activities. The students are encouragedto participate in District, State and Inter-University Competitions. The campus has facilitiesof well-equipped health centre, student centre, shopping centre, banks,post office, ATM etc.NCC/ NSS, sports and games are compulsory for all undergraduate students.However, the foreign national students and in-service students are exempted from NCC.Physical education is compulsory, except for in-service students.1.4.Academic ProgrammeThe undergraduate programmes i.e. BSc (Hons.) Horticulture, BSc (Hons.) Forestryand BTech Bio-technology are of 4 academic years (8 semesters) duration. The academicsession comprises two semesters each of 21 weeks with two semester breaks. NCC/ NSScamps and educational tours are organized during the semester break.1.5.Financial AssistanceThe following financial assistance is provided:ICAR National Talent Scholarship of 3000/- PM.College Merit Scholarship of Rs. 1000/- PM (10% of the enrolment in each class).Dr. O.P. Awasthi Memorial Merit Scholarship for one boy student of BSc (Hons.)Horticulture, College of Horticulture, Solan (Nauni) of 500/- per month.iv) Mrs. Kanti Devi Awasthi Memorial Merit Scholarship for one girl student of BSc(Hons.) Horticulture, College of Horticulture, Solan (Nauni) of 500/- per month.v)Government of India scheduled caste/ tribe and low income group stipend throughState Education Department.
