Google Trends (Image): Jellyfish v. ate all 2008&gprop images&q jellyfish,elephant2. Multiple usagesJELLYFISH are associated with a number of concepts. LITERAL - main usage for the actual animal: “I saw an amazing jellyfish at the aquarium!” “Be careful while swimming - there might be jellyfish.” METAPHORICAL - JELLYFISH are known to sting you, can be used to indicatewhen you’ve been “burned. “Watch out! He’ll get you when you aren’t looking.” SLANG - JELLYFISH are spineless. This emoji could be used to refer to someonewho is afraid to take action or oppose people when they should. “I don’t trust them.” PUN - JELLYFISH have also been used commercially to convey jealousy “You a little jelly?” FOOD - JELLYFISH are also a common food item in many East and SoutheasternAsian cuisine: “I tried a jellyfish salad for the first time yesterday.” “Did you know roughly 750,000 tonnes of jellyfish are landed each yearfor food!”.3. Use in sequences When combined with other existing emoji, it can represent a spectrum ofjellyfish types, such as: Box jellyfish Upside-down jellyfish

Moon jellyfish Egg-yolk jellyfish Flame jellyfish Ice jellyfish Activities Boating and snorkeling activities:Comical Puns, such as peanut butter and jelly or jelly sandwichToxicity, both literally as venomous/poisonous animals or “toxic personalities” Jellyfish warning at the beach today!or Don't trust him, girl4. Breaking new groundMarine animals represent less than 9% of existing animal emojis. Overall, onlyseven marine invertebrates are represented (5/7 are in marine-food category). The inclusion of JELLYFISH would be a welcome addition to our aquatic friends.C. DistinctivenessN/A. Jellyfish are iconic and easily distinguishable from other animals from their shape.A rounded bell, thin wavy tentacles, and blue color distinguish it from a seating stool.D. CompletenessN/A.V. Selection factors — ExclusionE. Petition or frequent requestsN/AF. Overly specificNo, this image is a general and effective representation of how to depict JELLYFISH.G. Open-endedNo, this is not part of a set of similar items.H. Already representableNo, there are no emojis from the Cnidaria branch of the Animal Kingdom. If accepted, the CORAL emoji would be the other member of this group (currently a provisionalcandidate), but the image and use are distinct from JELLYFISH.Below we list several examples where other emoji/characters are used to represent aJELLYFISH, these examples suggest that there is a demand for the use of JELLYFISH givenno animal emoji exists:

According to Emojipedia the WINDCHIME emoji ( ) [U 1F390] is used as asubstitution for JELLYFISH, but this does not seem consistent or in commonusage. The HOT SPRING emoji ( ) [U 2668] has also been used to represent theupside-down jellyfish. The repurposing of these emoji is clever, but is onlypassable given that no animal emoji currently exists that can representJELLYFISH. The character Oriya (ଳ) [U 0B33] has also been used to represent JELLYFISH,but like HOT SPRING is only a place-holder.I. Logos, brands, UI icons, signage, specific people, deitiesN/A. There are no logos, brands, signage or otherwise among the proposed characters.J. TransientN/A. Jellyfish have been around for over 600 million years, even before dinosaurs livedon the Earth.K. Faulty comparisonJustification for encoding the proposed emoji does not depend on analogy with otheremoji that were encoded only for compatibility reasons.L. Exact ImagesAn exact image is not required.VI. Other information. Both alternative images presented are based on the moon jellyfish (Aurelia sp.), which arecommon species across the world both in nature and in major aquaria facilities but have short, stubby tentacles that may be less “iconic”. Another image consideration would be to depict asea nettle, which has longer tentacles and can be red-orange or purple in coloration. Sea nettlesare also common across the world and in most major aquaria.

the CORAL emoji would be the other member of this group (currently a provisional candidate), but the image and use are distinct from JELLYFISH. The addition of the Planet emoji, and our solar system, to Unicode is a powerful representation of the natural world, common to all of humanity. Observation of our solar system was a source of wonder for mankind's earliest ancestors and a new Planet emoji would be a great way to communicate the future of space and interplanetary travel.
