4.2 Inlet pressure requirementsThis Grundfos UP(S) 15 pump is designed fordomestic hot water recirculation. The pressure required at the inlet of the pump isa function of the temperature of the water asshown in this table:3.5 Pumped liquidsWarningThe pump must not be used for thetransfer of flammable liquids suchas diesel oil, gasoline, and similarliquids.Pump not for pool or marine use. This Grundfos pump is intended for pumpingclean, thin, non-aggressive and non-explosiveliquids, not containing solid particles, fibers ormineral oils.If required, a 50 % by volume solution ofpropylene glycol and water can be used;however, a psi decrease in pump performancemay result due to an increase in the viscosity ofthe solution. Check with manufacturer forinformation regarding suitability of the pump forpumping other liquids.UP(S) Series 15 pumps are designed to circulatewater from 36 to 230 F (2 to 110 C)* up to amaximum pressure of 145 psi (10 bar).* Exceptions: Grundfos UPS 15-35, from 36 to 165 F(2 to 73 C). Grundfos UP(S) 15 pump with timer, maximum water temperature 150 F (65 C).Requiredinletpressure4.1 Temperatures4.1.1 Maximum water temperatureFor UP(S) Series 15 pump with line cord onlyThe maximum allowable water temperature isdetermined by the ambient or surrounding airtemperature as shown in this table:Temperature [ F ( 3)140(60)[ft (m)]5.0(1.5)4.5(1.4)3.0(0.9)[psi (bar)]2.2(0.15)1.9(0.13)1.3(0.09)In a pressurized system, the required inletpressure is the minimum allowable systempressure. In an open system, the required inlet pressure isthe minimum distance the pump must be locatedbelow the lowest possible water level of thewater source (tank, etc.).5. InstallationWarningDo not energize pump until it isproperly installed.Risk of electric shock — do not usethis pump in swimming pool ormarine areas.Caution4. Operating conditionsGrundfos UP(S) Series 15 pumps are designedfor indoor use only.Grundfos UP(S)15 series pumps with stainlesssteel or bronze volutes can be used in both openand closed systems.190(87)Water temp.[ F ( C)]Do not start the pump until thesystem has been filled and checkedfor leaks or other possiblecomponent failure. When making piping connections, be sure tofollow pipe manufacturer’s recommendationsand all code requirements for pipe material.5.1 Mechanical installation5.1.1 Pump mountingArrows on the side or bottom of the pumphousing indicate direction of flow through thepump. Grundfos circulators can be installed inboth vertical and horizontal lines. The pumpmust be installed with the motor shaft positionedhorizontally. Under no circumstances should thepump be installed with the shaft vertical orwhere the shaft falls below the horizontal plane.See fig. 2.We recommend that isolating valves be installedon either side of the pump. If possible, do notinstall elbows, branch tees and similar fittingsjust before or after the pump. Provide support tothe pump or adjacent pipework to reducethermal and mechanical stress on the pump.TM05 5564 3812English (US)3.4 ApplicationsAlthough the pump is designed to operate atmaximum water temperature of 230 F (110 C),we recommend to keep the operatingtemperature as low as possible (i.e. below140 F (60 C) to avoid precipitation of calcium.See exceptions in section 3.5 Pumped liquids.Fig. 24Acceptable pump mountingpositions

1. Thoroughly clean and flush the system priorto pump installation.2. Do not install the pump at the lowest point ofthe system where dirt and sediment naturallycollect. If there are suspended particles inthe water, we recommend that a strainerand/or filter be installed and cleanedregularly.3. Install an air vent at the high point(s) of thesystem to remove accumulated air.4. Ensure that water does not enter theterminal box during the installation process.5. Open system: Install the pump in the supplyline; the suction side of the pump should beflooded with water. Ensure that the statichead requirement from section 4.2 Inletpressure requirements is fulfilled.6. Closed system: Install a safety relief valve toprotect against temperature and pressurebuild-up.TM05 5563 38125.1.3 Position of terminal boxProper installation of the pump will have theterminal box located to one side of the pump orthe other, with the conduit entry pointing down.See fig 3.Fig. 3Recommended terminal boxorientationIf the terminal box position needs to bechanged, it is best to do so before installation. However, if the pump is already installed, ensurethat the line cord is unplugged and close theisolating valves before removing the hex sockethead screws. To change the terminal box position:1. Remove the four (4) hex socket head screwsfrom the pump housing and stator (4 or 5 mmwrench) while supporting the stator (motor).2. Carefully separate the stator from the pumphousing and rotate it to the correct terminalbox orientation and refit it.3. Replace the hex socket head screws andtighten diagonally and evenly (7 ft.-lb.torque).4. Check that the motor shaft turns freely.Remove the large screw in the middle of thenameplate, insert a small flat bladescrewdriver into the end of the shaft, andturn gently. See fig. 7.If the shaft does not turn easily, repeat thedisassembly/reassembly process.NoteUPS 15-42 does not require manualturning of shaft.5.2 Electrical installationWarningDo not energize pump until it isproperly installed.WarningRisk of electric shock! This pump is supplied with agrounding conductor. To reducethe risk of electric shock, be certainthat it is connected only to aproperly grounded groundingreceptacle. The safe operation ofthis pump requires that it begrounded in accordance with theNational Electrical Code and localgoverning codes and regulations.5.2.1 Electrical requirementsThe operating voltage and other electrical dataare marked on the nameplate. Make sure thatthe motor is suitable for the electrical supply onwhich it will be used.5.2.2 Electrical connectionInsert the 115 V plug of the line cord from thepump into a properly grounded 115 V outlet.5English (US)5.1.2 Installation requirements
