Publisher’s Message“The Golden Rule” is a fundamental principle which simply means “treatothers as you would like to be treated.” The world is full of all types of people:nice, mean, friendly, indifferent, and so on. I hate to sound like my grandmother, but a lot of people today (of ALL ages, not just kids or teens) are just outrightrude and inconsiderate; even here in the grand ole South. I have never writtena publisher’s letter that had any real negativity to it, but after nearly getting myAchilles tendon chopped in half by someone’s shopping cart today, and almoststepping in a very dirty, wide-open diaper in the parking lot of Sam’s last week, Ican no longer sit silent.Clarksville Family Magazinehas 10,000 issues publishedand distributed monthlyat over 150 locationsacross Clarksville and thesurrounding area.BTW, the diaper incident was on Tuesday, February 12th at around2:00 p.m. to be exact (thought I’d mention that in case the perpetratormay be reading this). AND there are several trashcans in and aroundSam’s and its parking lot. There is NO excuse for doing this. EVER.Phone(931) 338-2739Emailinfo@clarksvillefamily.comWhat is wrong with people!? I am no saintor Emily Post, but I do try to treat others theway I would want them to treat me. Do untoothers is such a simple and easy way to at leasttry to go through life, but it seems to be lost onso many people these days. Mark Twain saidthat “Common sense isn’t common” and I thinkthat common courtesy isn’t common these dayseither. I could really go on and on, but I won’tfor everyone’s sake.Fax(931) 919-1234MailPO Box 31867Clarksville, TN 37040I do not bring these things up to just be negative, but to try and be positive. Inthe face of all of these year round grinches, throw them a curve ball of kindnessand smile while asking them if they’re having a bad day. More than likely, a lightwill come on and make them realize that they are being unreasonable. And ifthey’re still being a jerk, so be it. Just tell them to “Have a nice day” and go aboutyour own business. Misery truly does love company; so don’t give them thesatisfaction of taking their bait. Now to follow my own advice, I won’t let negative people and situations that Iencounter dominate my life or this letter. Though bad news always gets morepress than good, I should mention a couple of nice things that have happened tome lately from strangers.Yesterday at Wal-Mart I had my three year old son in my arms and wasattempting to pull out a shopping cart and put him into it. As usual the carts wereall sort of jammed together. Another lady with a similarly aged little girl saw mestruggling, pulled out a cart, and rolled it out for me before pulling her own. Hownice! There was also a clerk that was on the verge of going home, or at least on abreak, but let me slip into his line even when he had already turned off his light. Iknow these things may not sound like a big deal, but they were to me at the time, and I would like to do the same for someone else the next time the opportunitypresents itself.Okay, I’m off my soap box, and if you’re still reading this, let me mention animportant shopping event this month (after all, my life clearly revolves aroundgoing to stores!). All weekend starting Friday, March 21, there is another taxholiday for the state of Tennessee. And on March 2nd Governor’s Square Mall ishosting their Military Shopping Night, with food, games and sales exclusively forour armed forces.I hope you and your family have a safe and happy Easter holiday. Let’s all enjoythe coming of spring and hopefully some warmer weather.Sincerely,Carla Lavergne4ClarksvilleFamilyClarksville FamilyWebclarksvillefamily.comPublisherCarla LavergneEditorCliff LavergneGraphic DesignerCarla LavergneContributing WritersFrazier AllenMeredith GildrieShannon GrahamCarla LavergneCliff LavergneStacy PickardChris PittmanKimberly HaynesTitlebaumSpecial ThanksPaul and Paula

Art & HeritageA Reminiscence: From Babes to the Bardby Meredith Gildriephotos courtesy of The Leaf-Chronicle/Greg WilliamsonEach year as spring nears longsleeved outfits must make way forcooler wear. Since 1987 checkingwhich clothes to move and whatitems to keep in our storage closetmeans I come across an orangeplaid hat and a trench coat withan orange plaid cape and trim. They’re way too small for me andcertainly not my style, but I keepthem just the same, and lookforward to seeing them hangingin the closet. The memories theyconjure are priceless. They started out as an ordinarygrey cap and coat, probablypurchased at Goodwill or theSalvation Army Store; but they hada special destiny. In 1986, in thehands of my 72 year old mother, they were transformed. Orange, white and black material wasaffixed to each piece to create afestive and fanciful air. Ear flapswere added and drawn up to thetop of the cap. A meerschaumpipe provided by my husband, and a pair of oxford shoescompleted the costume. No, this is not an early, or lateif you prefer, Halloween story. It’s a reminiscence—a tribute toyouth and age, to dreams anddetermination, to life and theatre.Yes, the costume was for a play!Babes in Toyland to be exact.early age. She danced solo for us(and for fellow sightseers waitingin line in front of the colonialcapitol building in Williamsburg,Virginia), and often cajoled hermore timid friends into impromptuperformances. At age 10 shepestered me into taking her to tryout for a part in Peter Pan at theRoxy. The novice stage motherthat I was I did not realize thatonce she auditioned but didn’tget a “part” she should stay at thetheatre to be cast as one of themyriad lost boys. Soshe missed being inthat first children’sshow at The Roxy.Disappointedbut undeterred, she attendedRoxy dramaclasses. Then 1986came, and withit the role of theteenage sister inJohn McDonald’soriginal play ATennessee Waltz, and that all-important detectivein Toyland, were just the start.Under the liberating yet stricttutelage of John McDonald andTom Thayer she found an outletfor her dreams and a directionfor her life. During middle schooland high school, during summershome from college, she dancedand sang and acted her waythrough comedies, musicals, anddramas. Whenshe couldn’t beon the stage, sheworked behind thescenes—takingnotes for thedirector, placingprops, findingcostumes, movingscenery. ButMy second daughter, Evelyn, was fond of performing from an6Clarksville Familydreams remained. Would she everplay an ingénue–beautiful butnaïve?Thank goodness for The Roxy’sdedication to performingShakespeare’s plays. Every yearsince 1986, one of the bard’s playshas been performed in support ofthe literary curriculum of the localschool system. (In fact the Roxy isthe only theatre in Tennessee thatannually produces the works ofShakespeare!) MacBeth trod theboards thrice at the Roxy. Romeoand his Juliet swore their lovethree times as well. King Richardshouted “My kingdom for a horse.”Hamlet pronounced his “To be ornot to be.” Lighter fare arrived viaTaming of the Shrew and The MerryWives of Windsor. At first therewere small roles for Evelyn. Sheeven got to step in for the beautifulFerdinand—the romantic MALErole—when a young communityactor had to miss a weekend ofshows of The Tempest. However, the role of the naïve and beautifulmaiden remained elusive. Finally, in her post-graduateyears she was privileged to playCordelia in King Lear, and laterJessica in The Merchant of Venice.Yes, youthful dreams do cometrue with determination and thehelp of older heads. Then newdreams take their place. ForEvelyn there is the dream of

playing Lady MacBethin the Scottish playin 2009. For anotheractor it will be facingthe Ides of March, asJulius Caesar appearsfor the second timeas the Shakespearecurriculum show. Oncemore young and old,and those in between, will thrill to the wordsand actions of Caesar,Antony, Brutus, andCassius as theatre bringslife to light at the Roxy!Don’t miss being apart of the drama.Actor, audience, dreamer, doer, expert, amateur—be a partof life in art. “Suspendyour disbelief and letyour imaginations worktheir will. Lipo What?Healthby Shannon GrahamHere at Bella Medical Spa our phonesare ringing off the hook with the question,“What is Lipodissolve? I just passed oneof your billboards, and was wondering if Icould get more information about it?”Lipodissolve is a non-surgical processthat dissolves unwanted areas of fat. There are no incisions involved, insteada series of injections based on a mixtureof two time-tested medications are used. The Lipodissolve is injected directlyinto the pockets of fat to promote itsdissolution. How does Lipodissolve work? The ingredients of Lipodissolve arePhosphatidylcholine (PPC) andDeoxycholic Acid. This combinationseparates the bonds connecting the fatmolecules, causing the fat to liquefy. Theliquefied fat goes through the lymphaticsystem, the body metabolizes it, and thenit is naturally flushed out of the body.Who is a good candidate forLipodissolve? Both men and womenwho have stubborn areas of fat that theycannot get rid of naturally through dietor exercise would benefit. Lipodissolveis NOT a weight loss system, nor shouldit be considered a “miracle drug.” Theparts of the body that can benefit fromLipodissolve are: abdomen, double chin, legs, arms, and “love handles”.Who is not a good candidate forLipodissolve? Woman who arepregnant or breast-feeding, patients under18 years old, individuals with cancer, diabetes, or AIDS, people with allergicreactions to eggs or soy, individualswith poorly controlled hypertension, and people with a Body Mass Index(BMI) over 30 should NOT considerLipodissolve. How long is the recovery? You shouldbe able to go about your daily activitiesright after Lipodissolve treatments. There is no down time as opposed toliposuction. How many treatments will I need? The number of treatments is different foreveryone. It all depends on a patient’slifestyle, activities, and amount of fat lossdesired.Do you dream of.Is it permanent? Yes, the fat cellstreated are dissolved, and filtered fromthe body. However, we encourage youto continue a healthy diet and exercise tokeep new fat cells from forming. To this date there are no knownpermanent or life-threateningcomplications; however minor side effectshave been reported. Patients mayexperience slight discomfort, swelling, and bruising all of which will subside afterone to five days.Where can I get Lipodissolve?Lipodissolve treatments are currentlyavailable at Bella Medical Spa, andperformed by David Boles, D.O. Onaverage, ten to twenty patients aweek come to Bella Medical Spa forLipodissolve, and the results have beentremendous. Family ValuesMarket Timing Bad Timingby Stacy PickardDo the math and you’ll figureout that market timing oftenequals bad timing. “Markettiming” is an investmentstrategy based on predictingwhen security prices will riseand fall and then attemptingto buy low and sell high. Whilethis makes sense in theory, it’sextremely hard to executesuccessfully.Timing MisstepsMarket peaks and valleysare not clearly visible untilafter they have passed. Fewinvestors can repeatedly timetheir investment decisions tomatch market movements.Instead, they may rush to buya “hot” security, only to seeits price subsequently drop, orswitch out of an investmentwhose price has plummeted, only to see it later rebound.Missed OpportunitiesInvestors who flee stockswhen the market dips riskmissing out on a futurerecovery. While the goalmay be simply to wait outa declining period then getback in when the time is right, this strategy can backfire. When the market changesdirection, it can happen veryquickly. By the time investorsrealize the market is on the upswing, it may be too late totake advantage of significantgains.Strategies That Pay OffInstead of trying to time themarket, you may be better offsticking to a well-thought-outinvestment strategy that doesnot include predicting the upsand downs of the market. Family LawDo I Really Need a Will?by Chris PittmanThat is a question I hear often, and my answer is usually the same.Yes, you do. If you are married andespecially if you have children theanswer is absolutely yes. There is apsychological block that keeps peoplefrom preparing for death the way theyprepare for other unexpected events.I am guilty of it myself. I am a lawyer, but I was married and my first child wasa year old before I finally broke downand prepared my own will thanks tothe persistent hounding of my child’spediatrician, who ended every wellvisit I attended with, “Well, have yougotten a will yet?”A will is a document that directshow you want the assets you owndistributed when you die. It alsoprovides guidance on what willhappen to your children if you diebefore they are adults. I tell my clientsthat a
