Fr. Gerry:Advent: it’s hard to believethat Advent will start nextSunday. I have made mypeace with Santa Claus andFrosty etc. Advent is a timeof preparation for Christmas. As Christians we celebrateChristmas on Christmas dayuntil the feast of the Epiphany on January 6th. It’s okayto put up the Christmas stuffearly, but please don’t throwout the Christmas tree on theday after Christmas! Thecelebration of Christmas continues until January 6th. Weshouldn’t let our merchants decide how we celebrate ourmost important feast, the birth of the Savior. From the merchant’s point of view, after Christmas day, they start to focus on Valentine’s day since no one buys Christmas presents after Christmas. Liturgically we celebrate the feast onits day and AFTER. This is why there are no Christmassongs in Advent. We can actually sing Christmas songs until the Baptism of the Lord on January 13th. Some theologians say that Pentecost (50 days after Easter) is actually thegreatest feast. However, we have no special foods orclothes or gifts for Pentecost and the culture ignores thefeast and most Christians wear more red on a football daythan Pentecost. So thanks Santa, Rudolph and Frosty; youhelp make Christmas a special day that we can’t ignore.Son of Man: this is the favorite title which Jesus used ofhimself. One bible translation even translates this as“human being”. The translator should be taken out andshot! It means the opposite! In the first reading from theBook of Daniel, the Ancient One (God the Father) is enthroned and one is presented to him riding on the clouds(sign of divinity) who is given power and authority over theearth. Jesus didn’t use the term “Christ/Anointed One/Messiah” forhimselfbecauseit had somanypoliticalimplications ofdefeating theRomans and establishing an earthly kingdom. So Jesus usedthe term “Son of Man” which refers to a divine being whohas power and authority over the earth. Jesus used a termthat more correctly described who he was. Yes, he was aking, but as he explained in the gospel to Pilate, it was notan earthly kingdom and he didn’t have an army. We need topay attention to the titles used by Jesus and the earlyChurch. They give us understand who Jesus is. These titlesare not interchangeable or haphazard. They are shortcuts toa whole theology of the person of Jesus and the nature ofGod.Cards for Members of the Armed ForcesThe Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus is most commonly known as the Patriotic Degree. They have chosen togather information so they can send cards of greetings &thanks before Christmas. If you know a family member, friend, or neighbor serving in a branch of the Armed Forces, please send their name & address prior to December 1st,to Jerold Kracl, 911 E 22nd, Schuyler, NE 68661 or emailto jd4jdk@gmail.com.Children’s Christmas MassThe Children’s Christmas Mass is just around thecorner. Background on the GospelThis Sunday is the last Sunday of the Church’s liturgical year. On this Sunday we celebrate the Solemnity ofChrist the King. Each year we set aside this Sunday toreflect upon this title that we have given to Jesus. In Lectionary Cycle C, we read a portion of the passion from theGospel of John, which is also part of the Gospel readingproclaimed each year on Good Friday. In John’s Gospel, Pilate is shown in a more favorablelight than in the other Gospels. In today’s reading, we hearone of two dialogues between Jesus & Pilate that arereported in John’s Gospel. Pilate questions Jesus about thecharges brought against him. Caiaphas & the high priestshave charged Jesus with a political crime, one that wouldrequire a punishment of death. Pilate distances himselffrom the Jewish leaders who accuse Jesus; he is not a Jew,& he seems to want little to do with this Jewish affair. In his responses to Pilate’s questions, Jesus distinguishes his kingdom from the political powers of thisworld. King & kingdom may be appropriate terms forJesus’ mission & promise, but only by analogy. Jesus isking, but not the kind of king we imagine or expect. Hewas certainly not the kind of king Pilate feared he mightbe.Jesus refers to a kingdom that does not belong to thisworld. This has been mentioned earlier in John’s Gospel.Recall that in his prayer during the Last Supper discourse(see John 17:6-18), Jesus prayed for his disciples who arein the world but do not belong to the world. Yet like Jesus, they are sent into the world for the world’s salvation. Intoday’s reading, we see Jesus identify the final proof thathis kingdom is not of this world: If his kingdom were ofthis world, then there would be people fighting to savehim. Again we hear echoes of John’s theme - salvation isworked out through a cosmic battle. It is helpful to returnto the first chapter of John’s Gospel to understand the context for Jesus’ words to Pilate. Jesus came into the world, but the world did not know him. In John’s language, theworld prefers the darkness & yet the light will not beovercome by the darkness.Truth has been another important theme in John’s Gospel. We see it emphasized in the conclusion of the dialogue between Jesus & Pilate. Those who know the truthwill recognize Jesus as king & will know how to interpretthis insight. Yet Jesus’ kingship was hidden from many ofhis contemporaries. Only those chosen, those who havethe eyes of faith, are able to see. As modern disciples ofJesus, we also struggle at times to recognize Jesus as king.Today’s Gospel invites us to see with eyes of faith that wemight recognize that Jesus, through his crucifixion &death, is indeed king & Savior of all.Share the WarmthThe Coat Closet will be hosted again this year by LaIglesia Principe de Paz and Christ United MethodistChurch in Schuyler.
