B31.8 Gas Transmission &Distribution Piping Systems This Code covers the design, fabrication, installation, inspection, and testing of pipeline facilities used for thetransportation of gas. The scope of this Code includesgas transmission and gathering pipelines, includingappurtenances, that are installed offshore for the purposeof transporting gas from wellhead separators toproduction facilities. This Code also covers safety aspectsof the operation and maintenance of those facilities. Chapter VIII- Offshore Gas Transmission Systems: Coverage design, material requirements, fabrication, installation, inspection, testing safety aspects of operation and maintenance offshore gas transmission systems include offshore gas pipelines, pipeline risers, offshore gas compressor stations, pipelineappurtenances, pipe supports, connectors.6

B31.4 Pipeline Transportation Systemsfor Liquid Hydrocarbons and OtherLiquids This Code contains requirements for the design, materials, construction, assembly, inspection, and testingof offshore and onshore pipeline systems. These systemstransport a wide range of liquids such as crude oil, naturalgasoline, natural gas liquids, liquefied petroleum gas, supercritical carbon dioxide, liquid alcohol, liquidanhydrous ammonia and other liquid petroleum products. Chapter IX Offshore Liquid Pipeline Systems-Coverage design, material requirements, fabrication, installation, inspection, testing safety aspects of operation and maintenance offshore pipeline systems include offshore liquid pipelines, pipelinerisers, offshore liquid pumping stations, pipeline appurtenances, pipesupports, connectors, and other components7

B31.8S Managing SystemIntegrity of Gas Pipelines 8This Standard currently applies to onshore pipelinesystems constructed with ferrous materials and thattransport gas, but can be modified to cover otheroffshore pipeline systems. It describes a process thatan operator of a pipeline system can use to assessand mitigate risks in order to reduce both the likelihoodand consequences of incidents. It covers bothprescriptive and performance-based elements ofintegrity management programs.

B31Q Pipeline PersonnelQualification 9This Standard establishes the requirements fordeveloping and implementing an effective PipelinePersonnel Qualification Program utilizing acceptedindustry practices. The standard specifies therequirements for identifying covered tasks that impactthe safety or integrity of pipelines, for qualifyingindividuals to perform those tasks, and for managingthe qualifications of pipeline personnel.

B31Q Pipeline PersonnelQualification Underlying Principles 10Focus is “safety and integrity”Technically basedContains prescriptive and performance options.Over 150 possible tasks listed in appendix providematerial necessary to develop a complete operatorqualification program. The standard can be applied to hazardous liquid, gas transmission & gas distribution systems.
