It lasted less than* a week but itseemed much longer at the time. It hasbeen a very good summer, with lots* of hotsunny weather and a reasonable amount ofrain at intervals to keep the garden plantsgoing. I have become used to travellingaround with no jumper or coat, despite theusual vagaries of the English summer. Thishas all changed now and we have had thefirst chilly mornings of approaching autumn, although it did warm up during the rest ofthe day. It is a warning to be prepared forthe sun going in rather suddenly, with thebreezes being a little more nagging thanrefreshing. It is a signal to stop feeding the plants, asthey certainly don’t need to be putting onany more soft growth. It is also a reminderto start reducing the fish feeding, althoughthey generally get what they ask for. Ifthey swim towards me at a fast rate andcrowd round, then they are ready to eatand don’t want to miss out. If I am politelyignored, despite my benevolence* with thecontainer of pellets, then I know theirappetite has been reduced by the fallingwater temperature, the overcast sky andthe lack of sunny warming spots in the softblanket weed along the edge of the pond.* "benevolence" Optional contraction* "languishing" Omits the hard G sound* "less than" Downward L in order to jointhe phrase* "lot" "masses" Always insert the vowel,as these are similar in outline and meaningImages & Text Beryl L kImages & Text Beryl L k

Blog ArchivePitman’s New Era Shorthand2019 September p3 A of 13Blog ArchivePitman’s New Era Shorthand2019 September p3 B of 13First Jumper DayAt present the delights of making winterwarmers will have to wait, as there is a lotto be done on the computer, althoughthose tasks are much more pleasant* whenthe weather is not enticing me outside andaway on the trains to see the sights ofLondon. The usual scenario is to get upreally early and do some of it then, followed by a day out in the sunshine, andthen at the end of the afternoon and intothe evening continuing with the tasks.* "pleasant" "pleasing" Always insert thevowel, as these are similar in outline andmeaningFirst Jumper DayI am designating today as First Jumper Day.After months of bare arms, neck and lowerlegs, today is a grey rainy cover-up day.My thoughts go to the sock knitting book, with all its wonderful variations on theconstruction of a right-angled* tube, withdifferent ways of doing the top cuffs, theinstep and the toe end. The moreinteresting ones with the fancy stitchpatterns must of course only be worn whilstsitting on a large well-padded sofa, constantly admiring one’s yarn-coveredfeet and not really walking around toomuch, in order* not to spoil the lacystitches. The answer to that is to use thepattern for ankle warmers, and then thereis no foot part to wear out. More impetushas been given to the quest for warmth, forgotten since last March or so, whenopening the bag of frozen peas, a reminderof the annoyance of cold fingers, andenjoying the hot air rising from the cookergas jets as the pans are put on. Plantsawaken in spring but habits* of selfpreservation against the cold awaken inSeptember.* "right-angled" Exceptional use of a halvedRay at the beginning of an outline, toenable a good join; normally full strokesRay and T are used.* "in order " Doubling to represent "order"* "habits" "hobbies" Insert the vowel, asthese are similar in outline and meaningImages & Text Beryl L kImages & Text Beryl L k

Blog ArchivePitman’s New Era Shorthand2019 September p4 A of 13Blog ArchivePitman’s New Era Shorthand2019 September p4 B of 13Wimbledon CommonFirst Jumper DayIt is difficult to know why we are soresistant to facing up to the end of summer, but I suspect it is because we have becomeused to not having to think at all about theother three cooler seasons, and so ourmental radar is turned off. Then we getsurprised, most unreasonably, when thereis a sudden change. In this countrysummer weather can end at the beginningof September or it can go on and staywarm, if not dry, all through October. So,there is no knowing whether this is the lastcarefree day (in terms of temperatures) orwhether the cooler weather has decided tomove in and stay here for the duration. Onthe other hand*, I would not like it at all ifI knew in detail what the weather wasgoing to do for the next month or two. However, I don’t intend to find myselfcaught out at the end of the day, wearingflimsy summer clothing whilst sitting on acold and blowy train platform. All will bewell as long as I don’t get complacent and Iremain prepared for all likely possibilities*,and, yes, there is no life motto that cannotbe usefully applied to shorthand writing* aswell. (726 words)Two weeks ago* we went to a fair onWimbledon Common which is in the southwest of London. Its official* title isWimbledon and Putney Commons Open Day.It is a fairly substantial event, with a largearena for displays and a variety of stalls allaround. The weather was fine, which is abonus in September, the sky was summeryblue with fluffy clouds, and the air warmand still, just perfect for a communityevent. Although the Common is surroundedby busy roads, it is a large area, and it wasa ten minute walk through the woodland toget to the field. There was no doubt aboutwhich direction to head in, as people withtheir children and dogs were all flowing tothe same point.* Omission phrase "two wee(k)s ago"* "official" Insert the first vowel, so it doesnot look like "final"* Omission phrase "on the oth(er ha)nd""short(hand) writing"* "possibilities" Optional contractionImages & Text Beryl L kImages & Text Beryl L k

Blog ArchivePitman’s New Era Shorthand2019 September p5 A of 13Blog ArchivePitman’s New Era Shorthand2019 September p5 B of 13Wimbledon CommonAs we came to the entrance gate, wepassed a small enclosure where childrenwere having donkey rides. The children’ssmiles were ear to ear, as might beexpected. Just inside the gate, we stoppedto listen to the brass band playing, a groupof smartly dressed men and women* sittingunder a small marquee. Opposite was thefarm animal petting area, with a goat, three friendly sheep and a white goose, allof whom were eagerly looking at the people, knowing that some of them had bags ofspecial food to give them. I think the sheepmust have been* specially washed for theday, as their wool was creamy* white andjust asking to be made up into winter hats, although they will of course not be partingwith it until spring.* Omission phrases "men (and) women""mus(t have) been"* "creamy" Insert the last vowel, as "creamwhite" would also make senseImages & Text Beryl L kWimbledon CommonThere were* many food and drink stalls, craft items of every description, andinformation on different local societies andclubs. Further along was the Butser NinthLegion, a Roman re-enactment society, with members in Roman costume andarmour, samples of Roman food and otherreplicas of items from daily Roman life inthis country 2,000 years ago. Towards therear were the stables and we saw thehorses in their stalls, enjoying the attentionfrom the visitors, as well as some donkeysand rare breed chickens in an enclosure atthe back. In the arena a dog show was inprogress, with the dogs running up anddown ramps and through hoops. They wereall of different sizes and breeds, all verywell* behaved and they went through theirroutines without hesitation. They were fullof energy and excitement, if not at beingon show, then because of the endless dogtreats that seem to accompany thecompletion of each manoeuvre.* Omission phrases "there (w)ere" "very(w)ell"Images & Text Beryl L k

Blog ArchivePitman’s New Era Shorthand2019 September p6 A of 13Blog ArchivePitman’s New Era Shorthand2019 September p6 B of 13Wimbledon CommonWhat we were particularly keen to see wasthe display of birds of prey. We had seenthe birds sitting under the tent awning atthe far side, in the shade and each onesitting on its perch by the side of itsdrinking saucer. The first bird on show wasa large raven, and it was good to see itflying around at will, but always comingback to the handler to get the piece ofchicken on offer. At one point it decided towalk and wander on the ground and a littleway into the crowd, as many people hadfood with them, sandwiches and ice creams. After that we saw a small hawk, which hadthe freedom to fly around the area andover the tents and trees.Images & Text Beryl L kWimbledon CommonAt midday we had a look around Wimbledonwindmill, which is now a windmill museum.Inside are working models* of windmillsand wind turbines in glass cases, and alarge display of woodworking tools.Upstairs are various artefacts relating tothe work of the mill, pieces of cogwheels*,samples of different grains, diagrams ofwindmill construction and operation, andmany other items of interest. There is alsoa hand quern with some wheat grain sothat children can have a go* at grinding itinto flour. We returned to the field, and sawthe visitors at the Reptile Events stand, asthey were allowed to hold the snakes. Ioften wonder if the fascination leads to anyof the children actually getting a snake orwhether the desire passes once they gethome and they realise what a long-termcommitment it would be.* "models" Outline follows the form of theverb, written thus to enable the other verbforms, likewise "mettle". Nouns andadjectives like "medal" "metal" "modal"used the halved MD stroke and stroke L.* "cogwheels" The outline has the Hwaystroke, as it is not possible to form theHwel stroke here* "have a go" Inserting the vowel in "go" ishelpful here, as the word is being used as anounImages & Text Beryl L k

The childrenwere invited to come into the arena and sitin two long rows, so that the owl could flydown between them towards its foodreward*. Lastly three children of varyingages were chosen to have the owl land ontheir gloved hand, an experience I amcertain they will never forget. Our walkback through the woods was very quiet, incomparison with the activities and hubbubhappening in the main field. As usual, itwas bus, two trains and another bus to gethome, after a very delightful andinteresting day out in the open air andsunshine. There was a sense of urgency*to get this completed before the weatherturns and although I thought it would justbe a day or two of concerted effort to digout the roots, it eventually took verymuch* longer. As part of it was a small lowhedge, there were many individual plantswith their thick roots tangled, so I wasforced to take the slow method of gradualreduction and destruction, chopping off thetop growth, using the long handledloppers* to cut into the main stem, goinground again to dig round each stem with anold kitchen knife to expose the belowground part and attacking once more* withthe loppers.* "urgency" Omits the N* "very much" Includes the M in order tojoin the phrase* Omission phrase "wu(n)s more"* "loppers" are a cutting tool for thickbranches, hence the long handles to applythe force to the bladesImages & Text Beryl L k

I startledmy neighbour when she heard a greetingemanating from ground level, beneath therose bush, when she had thought thegarden was empty. I could have done withan obedient beaver to gnaw all the stemsfor me, but I had to do it myself, poking, cutting and lopping with the ratchet pruner,in order to* ensure nothing of it couldpossibly regrow. My estimate of two daysturned into the best part of two weeks.* Omission phrase "in ord(er to)"Images & Text Beryl L kIt is all finished now, with clumps of newcrocus and daffodil bulbs in place, andsome English bluebells which I hope willincrease over time. The grand finale wastwo trips to the municipal recycling depotto dispose of the plant material, as well assome other* rubbish, and an afternoonhosing down the paths and tidying away allthe tools and empty* bags. Satisfactionwith the completion of the task wasachieved at last* and not a wintry blast orblizzard in sight to call a halt to these lastminute* jobs.* "some other" Using doubling to represent"other"* "empty" Helpful to insert the first vowel,as in this context it could be misread as"muddy"* "at last" "at least" Always insert thevowel, to differentiate* Omission phrase "las(t)-minute"Images & Text Beryl L k

Blog ArchivePitman’s New Era Shorthand2019 September p9 A of 13Blog ArchivePitman’s New Era Shorthand2019 September p9 B of 13Last Minute GardenLast Minute GardenAs expected, according to the* weatherforecast, the following days brought heavypersistent rain, which is set to continue forthe next week* or two. I was ratherpleased with the downpours, partly becausethe ground was in need of a good soaking, but mainly because it compacts all theloose soil and makes the now flat baremuddy areas unappealing to passing foxesor cats looking for a scratching or buryingplace. I now give it regular smug glancesout of the window, and approving smiles asI walk past, admiring the result andimagining how it will look when the bulbscome through. I am not* sure what therest of the world has been doing during thistime, but the prolonged battle of the rootshas most certainly been decisively foughtand won.Despite the dark skies and heavy rain, it isstill very mild and so we are not into wintermode just yet, although seeing the coverson the garden benches does seem toindicate that it’s “close of business” for thegarden. At this time of year I have alwaysthought in terms of “putting the garden tobed” but over time I have gradually*abandoned the habit* of having pots offlowers, or containers of plants that have tobe dealt with at the end of the season.* "gradually" Full strokes, to distinguish itfrom "greatly"* "habit" Insert the first vowel in this, andin "hobby", as they are similar in outlineand meaning* Omission phrases "according (to) the""ne(k)s(t w)eek"* "I am not" Using N hook and halving torepresent "not"Images & Text Beryl L kImages & Text Beryl L k

But you will have toleave your comfort zone (very slightly),spend time and effort* recognising theoutlines, push through and overcome anydifficulties and finally have any doubtsLast Minute GardenClose of business does not happen all thewhile the apple trees are full of fruit, andthe morning ritual is to wander down andpick up any fallen ones. All but one of thetrees drop their apples onto soil, but theSpartan apple tree has its brancheshanging out over the paved area, and sothey get damaged more than the others. Alittle hunting around is necessary becauseof the slight slope, which means that theapples tend to roll away and, being a verydark red, they successfully hide themselvesunder the leaves of other plants. Unusableapples are tossed to the very end of theabout your shorthand ability blownsideways, never to return.* Omission phrases "I (h)ope you" "time(and) effort"* "sideways" Always insert the vowel inwords ending "-ways" and "-wise" todifferentiate, as they generally have thesame meaninggarden, forcefully thrown at the paving sothat they smash open, for the birds topeck* at, and the usable ones are madeinto a smoothie. In addition there is thesatisfaction that they are free of pesticides, free of airmiles, free of packaging and freeof charge*. We did not* want to stay indoors, especially as next week* will be mostly*rainy. We decided to go into the city to seethe river which is always busy with lotsgoing on. We took a bus to the train station,a train to Victoria Station, and then thetube train to Monument* Station.
