The rural women share in the total agricultural labourforce is considerable, as about 48 percent of the agricultural labour force is driven by femalefamily members. Since the subsistence economy cannot meet the households’ basic needs, theparticipation of rural women in generating additional income is relevant. This is quite significantgiven the tendency of underestimating the contribution of women to production, food andnutrition security. In the Ethiopian context rural women’s roles are critical and necessary in alldevelopment agendas. Objective of the project:To improve the nutrition and income of the targeted rural women/communities in SouthernNationals and Nationalities and People Regional State (SNNPRS) through the development of theMoringa value chain (MVC).Project outcomeTo achieve this objectives the project plans to achieve the expected following results:i)The groups active in the moringa value chain are organized, empowered and linked to thelocal and regional market;2 Page

ii)iii)iv)A pilot processing line for moringa and moringa based products (i.e. oil, tea andnutraceuticals) is put in place; The Ethiopian Public Health Institute is empowered for undertaking quality certificationactivities on Moringa based products;Food security of the targeted households is improved.Project Target GroupsThe project target groups are represented by women and rural communities with special attentionto local institutions in SNNPR. UNIDO is training the beneficiary farmers, with specialconsideration of women, to produce and process moringa leaves and seeds, taking into accounthealth and sanitation parameters and having as priority to combat malnutrition for small childrenand pregnant lactating women. Moreover, the technical and infrastructural capacity developmentof the project assists the farmers groups to create diversification for income generation throughentrepreneurship capacity development. The Moringa Value Chain development project results directly benefit the entire Wezeka Kebele, composed of about 7340 people, out of which about 50% are women. The moringa value chaincould indirectly influence the livelihood of the residents in Arba Minch Zuria Woreda, particularly in the three neighbouring Kebeles, with a population of around 25,000 people.3 Page

Submission of selection of beneficiaries and endorsement from the relevant AuthorityRegarding the organization of the groups active in the moringa value chain, currently 110 traineesare participating, who will benefit about 570 residents of the Kebele with a list endorsed by ArbaMinch Zuria Woreda Administration. In actual terms the project will directly benefit about 7340people from Wezeka and about 25,000 people from the surrounding Kebeles. The beneficiary selection process, as described in details in chapter 4.1, was participatory; afterconsultations at Federal and Regional levels, a ‘Woreda Selection Committee’ was established inArba Minch Zuria Woreda to facilitate and coordinate the selection of beneficiaries. Theselection of beneficiaries was then conducted by ‘Melmay Committee’ at Kebele level; the‘Melmay Committee’ is composed of religious leaders, community elders, representatives ofHealth Extensions Worker, Development Agents, Kebele Administrators and womenrepresentatives. SARI and UNIDO actively participated to the process that was completed at theend of April 2017. The first social coaching explained the details and the corevalues of the project and at the end an open discussion session was created where importantfeedbacks were drawn the attention by the participants. The first training of selected beneficiaries on nursery operation started on 26 June 2017; thebeneficiaries are gradually preparing 20,000 moringa seedlings to be ready in 45-50 days’ timefor transplanting to the pilot project site. The moringa nutrient profiling process was finalized by EPHI and the laboratoryanalysis results for the major nutrition parameters were provided to the other stakeholders. The Technical Advisory Group (TAG) meeting of MVC chain project, held in Hawassa on 11May 2017, gave important updates on the first regulatory framework to be realized through theFMHACA draft Traditional/Herbal Medicines and Herbal supplements Policy document. Indeed, the Draft Policy Document presented to the TAG meeting will be the base to develop theregulatory framework for moringa products and food supplements.Further discussions are currently running to facilitate the way forward to finalize the policydocument and other guidelines, for example the quality control manual. Moreover, the EthiopianStandard Authority developed another draft standard document for moringa leaves regulation, which is under review by the concerned stakeholders, and is expected to be submitted to thecouncil of ministers for final approval in the next months. These running activities, once finalized, will provide the necessary requirements to develop thenational regulatory framework and will be the base for both national and internationalcertification process.9 Page
