University Program Review Commi ee (VPAA/VPAT/VPSL)Func ons of the University Program Review Commi ee:The Program Review process is intended to improve the quality of the academic,administra ve, and student life programs offered at Washburn University. It is also intendedto provide an organized opportunity for faculty to reflect on educa onal prac ces and reviewthe role of their department/unit in the context of the University. Program Review offers theopportunity to reflect on department/unit and ins tu onal priori es and encouragesprograms to consider how they support the strategic direc on of the University. The primarygoals are: 1) To enhance the quality of programs by assessing program strengths andchallenges; 2) To align program needs and campus priori es with the planning and budge ngprocess; 3) To assure that department/unit priori es are consistent with the University’smission and strategic direc ons.Program review and assessment informa on, a er review by the appropriate Dean or unithead, is submi ed to the program review commi ee via the Vice President for AcademicAffairs’ office. Department/program informa on is made available to the commi eemembers for their review during the semester prior to the scheduled review.The Program Review commi ee will meet with the department/program chair/unit head todiscuss the execu ve summary, documenta on and other relevant ma ers. Based on thismee ng, the commi ee will prepare a report to be sent back to the department/programchair and unit head. General Educa on Commi eeThe General Educa on component of higher educa on specifically focuses on introducing studentsto ways of knowing, integra ve knowledge, apprecia on of historical context, common themes ofhuman experience, social responsibility, analy cal reasoning, civic engagement, or thedevelopment of prac cal skills and reflec ve habits of mind. The General Educa on requirementsat Washburn University are designed with the intent of providing students with a grounding inliberal arts and sciences and shaping an informed, capable ci zenry through a broad educa on in arange of disciplines. These courses ensure that students are equipped with the knowledge andskills necessary to engage with our rapidly‐changing world over their life me. Beginning in fall2013, in order to accomplish these goals, students will complete core courses in composi on andmathema cs and a broad range of course work in Arts and Humani es, Social Sciences, andNatural Sciences and Mathema cs designed specifically to meet the following five major learningoutcomes.The func on of the General Educa on Commi ee is to assist faculty members to develop ormodify courses that facilitate the acquisi on of university learning outcomes listed in the GeneralEduca on Statement, to approve courses for general educa on based on the criteria establishedby the General Faculty, and to review transfer courses as necessary (e.g., technical coursetransfers, courses not approved for general educa on by the transferring ins tu on) to determinewhether they meet the spirit and intent of the Washburn University general educa on criteria.If a Washburn course is disapproved by the Commi ee, the ra onale for such ac on will bewri en with reference to the adopted standards and communicated to the VPAA and the sponsor.Once a course is approved by the Commi ee, it will be the responsibility of the sponsoringdepartment to review its implementa on and assess its effec veness at least every five years. Theresults of the review and assessment will be forwarded to the General Educa on Commi ee. Anychange in the course's targeted university student learning outcome or in its general content orformat must by submi ed to the General Educa on Commi ee for approval.Decisions of the Commi ee concerning course approval and five‐year course review, will bereported by the VPAA or his/her designee to the deans. Decisions of the commi ee concerningcourse approval and five‐year course review, may be appealed to the Faculty Senate with furtherappeal to the General Faculty.Members of the Commi ee are: the VPAA or his/her designee, one faculty member from eachdivision of the College, one faculty member each from the Schools of Applied Studies, Businessand Nursing, and one library faculty member. Faculty members are elected by their cons tuentunits.5

Assessment At Washburn Ins tute of TechnologyAssessment is an integral part of the educa onal process at Washburn Tech, and accuratefeedback is an important tool in con nuously improving the ins tu on’s technicalprograms.
