Advancing the National Soil Moisture NetworkSteven Quiring (Texas A&M), Jessica Lucido (USGS),& Mike Strobel (USDA NRCS)http://cida.usgs.gov/nsmn pilot/Veva Deheza (NIDIS), Roger Pulwarty (NIDIS), Chad McNutt (NIDIS), Jim Verdin(USGS)USGS CIDA Staff: Luke Winslow, Jordan Read, Andrew YanTAMU Staff: Trent Ford, Zhongxia Li, Partha BaruahSpatial Pattern and Analysis Research (SPAR) Labwww.geog.uvic.ca/spar

Motivation President's Climate Action Plan (2013) Missing piece of hydrologic observationaldata

Motivation

Current Soil Moisture Data Sources SCAN & CRN & Others– In situ– National coverage– Real-time & historical– Limited web service access– Multiple depths NASMD– In situ– Historical– National coverage– Multiple depths SMOS, NLDAS, SMAP– Satellites & models– National coverage– Near real-time– Near surface data

Pilot Use Cases1.Operational Drought Monitoring: NOAA, U.S.Drought Monitor2.Experimental Land Surface Modeling:NOAA/NOHRSC, Snow Modeling3.Operational Hydrological Modeling: NOAA RFCsSpatial Pattern and Analysis Research (SPAR) Labwww.geog.uvic.ca/spar

GoalAs a U.S. Drought Monitor Author I want to seea map of percentile ranking of currentvolumetric water content (VWC) at discreteand common depths, related to 30 yr record, for sites colored using the drought monitorlegend so that I can determine the necessarychanges to be made to this week’s DM map.

Pilot Data Sets In Situ:– Climate Reference Network– SCAN & SNOTEL– Oklahoma Mesonet– West Texas Mesonet Modeled:– NLDAS-2 model-derived soilmoisture from: Noah,Mosaic, SAC and VIC

National Soil Moisture Networkhttp://cida.usgs.gov/nsmn pilot/

NSMN- Pilot Work Completed Station metadata has been gathered Web services established for West TexasMesonet, Oklahoma Mesonet and ClimateReference Network; TAMU is serving these data(temporary for pilot) Mediator coded to access and process all 4networks Interactive map has been developed Analysis of historical data to calculate cumulativedistribution functions (CDF) Quality control and percentile calculations havebeen automated Developed an SOS service for aggregated VWCdata

Soil Moisture Percentiles

Soil MoisturePercentilesDepth of measurement variations:the average number of years of datathat are necessary to generate stablesoil moisture percentiles at eachstation. The record length thresholds aredetermined using the Anderson-Darlingtest with a Bonferroni adjustment formeasurements made at: 5-10 cm, 2030 cm, and 50-60 cmFord et al. (submitted)5-10 cm20-30 cm50-60 cm

Lessons Learned Most major in-situ networks do not currently servesoil moisture via web services Existing services often have little or no documentation Station metadata are not available via services Sites can be added or removed Although period of record is relatively short, stablepercentiles can be estimated for most stations

Next Steps: Moving Beyond the Pilot Build-out system infrastructure* Integrate SMAP and NLDAS-2 data Survey federal, state and local agencies to identifysoil moisture data sources and new use cases Incorporating new data sources Build industry partnerships Develop new tools, visualizations and dataproducts Collaborate with the international soil scienceinformatics community by participating in the OGCADWG SoilIEhttp://cida.usgs.gov/nsmn pilot/

National Soil Moisture NetworkWorkshopMay 24 - 26, 2016NOAA/National Integrated Drought Information System, Boulder, CO Goals and Objectives:– Coordinating soil moisture monitoring and assimilation activitiesacross the federal landscape with states and other interests, including the private sector– Providing an update on the progress made on a CoordinatedNational Soil Moisture Network– Crafting a future direction and approach for a coordinated NSMN.Identifying the next steps, addressing who will be involved, andhow and what needs to be accomplished Logistics: moisturenetwork-workshop Registration: sture-networkworkshop-registration

soil moisture (w S) at shallow soil depths (approximately 2- 5 cm) (Newton, Black, Makanvand, Blanchard, & Jean, 1982; Raju et al., 1995). This is due to the fact that the soil moisture dependence of the transmission coefficient across the air-soil interface predominates the soil moisture dependence of the total energy originating from the soil
