CROSS – CENTRAL TO OUR CATHOLIC FAITHSeptember 2021Volume 14 Number 09The cross is at the heart and centre of all that we as Christiansbelieve. The Exaltation of the holy cross is the central mysteryof our faith, that the one who was lifted up on the cross incrucifixion has triumphed over the power of sin and death because Godhas highly exalted him.The feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross commemorates twohistorical events: the discovery in 326 of what was regarded as the trueCross, under the temple of Venus in Jerusalem, by Saint Helena, themother of the Emperor Constantine and the dedication in 335 of thebasilica and shrine built on the site. However, a real understanding of this feast is not to be found inthe historical descriptions of those events and what followed them.Instead, one has to go to Scripture and look especially at John's Gospeland the way in which it treats the story of Moses and the bronze serpent(Numbers 21:4-9). In that story, Moses is commanded by the Lord to setup a bronze fiery serpent on a pole, so that whenever a person was bittenby a serpent, that person would look at the bronze serpent and live. In thegospel reading (John 3:13-17), Jesus tells Nicodemus that he, as Son ofMan, must be 'lifted up', as was the serpent, so that whoever believes inhim may have eternal life. The first meaningof the Greek word thattranslates 'lift up' is 'exalt',INSIDEa term which is associatedProvincial01more readily with theresur rection than theIndia05crucifixion. However, byUnited States10its association with theCalendar13incident of the bronzeserpent, John seems tohave in mind both thesetting up of Jesus on the

September 2021cross, the crucifixion, as well as his exaltation in theawesome splendor of resurrection.John differs from the other evangelists in hisreluctance to see the crucifixion as a humiliation. Heomits the agonized plea in Gethsemane and the cry ofdesolation on the cross. The Jesus of John's gospel says:'“Now my soul is troubled. And what should Isay—'Father, save me from this hour'? No, it is for thisreason that I have come to this hour. (John 12:27). ForJohn, the incarnation was a manifestation of divine glory(John 1:14), and the cross instrumental for itscompletion. This perspective – of seeing past the reality ofthe suffering to its significance as the means of exaltation, and in that way seeing the cross as holy – can be pastorallyhelpful. It infuses hope even in our prayers of lament, ahope when all seems lost. The cross because of what it represents is themost potent and universal symbol of the Christian faith. Itis a constant reminder and witness of Christ's ultimatetriumph, His victory over sin and death through Hissuffering and dying on the Cross. The cross, once a tool ofdeath, has become a means to life, an instrument of oursalvation. It gives strength to resist temptation, it giveshope to seek new life and it dispels fear and darkness. The cross is at the centre of our lives every timewe face sickness and death. The cross is at the centre of ourlives in frailty and old age.The cross is at the centre of ourlives every time we feel utterly alone and abandoned. Thecross is at the centre of our lives every time we aretempted to give in and give up. It is at the centre of ourlives every time we are tempted to throw our hands up indespair. It keeps reminding us that only when we embracethe cross in the midst of suffering and abandonment canwe understand the power of resurrection. Only when weembrace the cross is it possible for God to raise us up andgive us new life. The Cross is central to our Catholic faith.September Calendarfor Fr. Becoming the Beloved- Rev. Fr. Franklin Arockia DossSeptember 2021“You are my beloved,” who does not want to hearsuch a statement? Infect everyone is trying to become orhear from someone that “you are my beloved.” It is becauseeveryone is trying to be in a loving relationship, be loved, accepted, not rejected for anything. Victor Frank sharesfrom his personal experience that he heard morecomplaints, murmurs, curses, and a constant cry wasstating that “I have nothing to expect from life anymore.”How to become beloved to them? “Becoming the Belovedmeans letting the truth of our belovedness becomeenfleshed in everything we think, say, or do,” says HenriNouwen. According to the Gospel writers, Jesus is theBeloved son of the Heavenly Father. How does one goabout living out this belovedness? Nouwen proposes adiscipline derived from four words, suggested to him byhis daily celebration of the Eucharist: “taken, blessed, broken, and given.” Today, everyone is forced to becomethe beloved of our brothers and sisters affected by variousillnesses, especially Covid-19. Only by becoming belovedto each other, these kinds of diseases and infirmities couldbe overcome.and the same attitude toward others. Gratitude is the mostfruitful, deepening your consciousness that you are not an“accident” but a divine choice. These three attitudes veryessential to become the beloved of our bretheren.Unmasking society's view, searching for truth, and being grateful always will enlighten one's closenessand closeness to the Heavenly Father as we celebrate thebirthday of Our Bl. Mother, it is essential to imitate hervirtues, seek her grace to become influential Christians, unmask society's evil nature, search the truth constantly, and be grateful. Today, the globe is affected by thepandemic. This is the opportune time to become belovedto all the brothers and sisters in society locally and at auniversal level. The fruit of becoming a beloved cannot bemeasured and valued. For example, the beloved son of theHeavenly Father, Jesus, came to earth, took human nature, still humbled himself and became a slave, carried thecross, and dies on the cross, and God rose Him on the thirdday. Secondly, our Bl. Mother, she accepted the invitationof the Father through the Angel, became the Mother ofJesus, accompanied him, journeyed with him till hisascension to heaven, and as a result, the Church traditionteaches us that She was taken into heaven both body andsoul. Still going further sh is anointed as a queen of Heavenand earth. The essential part of our Christian life shouldimitate the above four principles. Every Christian isinvited to participate in these disciplines, to becomebeloved to our brothers and sisters. Our Bl. Mother Marytook part in all four disciplines and became the bestexemplary to be followed. As we are celebrating herbirthday, each of us needs to follow and practice thedisciplines proposed by Nouwen. Today it has become animpossible task to become a beloved (a good Samaritan)and faced with rejections, unloved, not chosen causesmore division and evil elements in our society. Naturally, all these elements affect our closeness, which is the key toparticipating in these four disciplines. How do we get intouch with our closeness when rejections surround us?Nouwen shares a few methods to renew andrefresh the closeness to become an effective beloved tosociety. First of all, one has to keep unmasking the worldabout what it is: manipulative, controlling, power-hungry,and in the long run, destructive. The world teaches liesabout many things, but an individual must be realistic andrealistically understand everything and not immediatelybelieve in the lies. Secondly, one has to keep on looking forpeople and places where truth is spoken and reminded ofthe deepest identity as the chosen one. Thirdly, it isessential to celebrate the closeness constantly. It meanssaying thank you to God for having been chosen oneselfProvincialAdditionally, the saints are the best example ofbecoming beloved to all the brothers and sisters. Imitatingthe values of saints, each of us needs to become beloved toour own brothers' others. Becoming beloved meanscherishing the closeness, vocation, and bringing glory toGod constantly on earth. Let us celebrate Mary and othersaints and become beloved to heavenly and earthly beings.Let us aspire to be called “Beloved.”33
