Gauge BlocksLength Standards Brought to You by MitutoyoFeatures and AccuraciesClassification of Gauge Blocks by ShapeFeatures of Mitutoyo Gauge BlocksMitutoyo offers 3 types of gauge block for use as length standards: rectangular steel, rectangular ceramic(CERA Blocks) and square steel gauge blocks. In addition, rectangular and square protection blocks (1mmand 2mm for each) are available in tungsten carbide. Mitutoyo gauge blocks are recognized to be of thehighest quality both here in Japan and abroad, and are available in various grades to meet every need inrespect of working conditions, environment and application.Mitutoyo broadly divides gauge blocks into two categoriesaccording to the block shape.Rectangular gauge blocks30*mmSquare gauge9Nominalsize5or 3AccuracyAs a world-leading precision measuring equipment manufacturer, Mitutoyo is certified by the Japanese government as anaccredited calibration laboratory, which means that the accuracy of its gauge blocks is guaranteed through traceability tothe Metrology Management Center of the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST).WringingRectangular gauge blocks9m* over more than halfLapping measuring surfaces is one of Mitutoyo’s specialties. Our advanced technique, developedNominal5m3rosizea century, enables us to achieve the optimum flatness and surface finish needed for gauge30 blocks and thus maximizeHole ø6.7 m* Depends on the nominal size.More than 10mm10mm or lessSquare gauge blocks124.24.1the wringing force.NominalsizeAbrasion Resistance and Dimensional Stability of Steel BlocksHigh-carbon high-chrome steel is employed to satisfy a variety of the material characteristicsrequired for gauge* Depends on the nominal size.blocks. Our advanced heat treatment technology for steel blocks, which involves repeatedtemperatureMorethan 10mm cycling, simultaneously achieves excellent abrasion resistance and minimizes any change in lengthoverortime.10mmlessCERA BlocksCERA blocks are made of a ceramic material with a superior surface finish, created by Mitutoyo’s ultra-precisionmachining techniques, that provides a premium quality block with significant advantages:1. Corrosion ResistantAnti-corrosion treatment is not required when handled normally (i.e. with fingers), resulting in simple maintenanceand storage.2. No Burrs Caused by Accidental MishandlingSince the CERA Block is very hard, it will not scratch easily and is highly resistant to burrs. If a burr is formed, it caneasily be removed with a ceramic deburring stone (Ceraston).3. Abrasion ResistantCERA Blocks have 10 times the abrasion resistance of steel gauge blocks.SteelEAbrasion loss (µm)Abrasion loss data0.4Silicon nitrideTungsten carbide0.2CERA Block02000400060008000Sliding distance (m)4. Dimensionally StableCERA Blocks are free from dimensional change over time.5. Clearly Marked SizesBlack characters, indicating the nominal length, are inscribed by laser and are clearly visible against the white surfaceof the block.6. Non-magnetic Nature Prevents Steel Swarf Contamination7. High Wringing ForceSuperior flatness and surface finish provides maximum wringing force.Hole ø6.7 mmGrade and ApplicationGrade 2:These gauge blocks are intended for shop floor use to setand calibrate fixtures as well as precision instruments.Grade 1:This grade is used within an inspection area to verify theaccuracy of plug and snap gages as well as for settingelectronic measuring devices.Grade 0:These higher accuracy gauges are intended for usewithin a controlled environment by skilled inspectionstaff. Mainly used as reference standards for setting highprecision measuring equipment and for the calibration oflower grade gauge blocks.Grade K:Gauge blocks of this accuracy are intended for usewithin a temperature controlled inspection room orcalibration laboratory. They should be used as masterswith certificates against other gauge blocks which arecalibrated by comparison.Constructing a Gauge Block StackThe following points should be noted when constructinga gauge block stack:1. Use as few gauge blocks as possible to obtain therequired length by selecting thick blocks whereverpossible.2. Select the block for the least significant digit first, thenwork back through the more significant digits until therequired length is attained.3. There are multiple combinations for the integer part ofa length. To prevent wear as much as possible, do notalways use the same gauge blocks.Example: Required length 45.6785mm For a 1mm-based gauge block set (112 pcs.)1.00051.0081.1717.525 )45.6785mm For a 2mm-based gauge block set (112 pcs.)2.00052.0082.1714.525 )45.6785mm* Regarding the method for wringing, refer to “Quick Guide toPrecision Measuring Instruments” on page E-33.E-3Mitutoyo operates a policy of continuous improvement that aims to provide the customer with the benefit of the latest technological advances. Therefore the company reserves the right to change any or all aspects of any product specification without notice.

Mitutoyo Gauge Blocks and InspectionCertificatesA Certificate of Inspection is furnished with all Mitutoyogauge blocks with a serial number on the box (in the caseof sets) and an identification number on each block. Thedeviation of each block from nominal length, at the time ofinspection, is stated. For this inspection, each gauge blockis measured relative to the upper level master using a gaugeblock comparator. Grade K gauge blocks are measured by aprimary measurement method using an interferometer.8. Highly Resistant to Dropping and Impact DamageThe CERA Block material is one of the toughest ceramics. It is extremely difficult to crack a CERA block innormal use.Features of Square Gauge Blocks1. Gauge blocks in a stack can be clamped togetherAfter wringing square gauge blocks, a tie rod can be inserted throughthe center hole to clamp the blocks together for extra security.2. A wide measuring surface with cross-sectional dimensionsof 24.1 x 24.1mm is available.A square gauge block retains stable orientation both longitudinally andlaterally. A wide range of applications is covered, including cutting toolpositioning, angle measurement with a sine bar, taper measurementwith a roller, and inspection of depth micrometers.Long and Ultra-Thin Gauge BlocksMitutoyo offers extra-thin gauge blocks from 0.10 mm to 0.99mm (increments of 0.01 mm) as well as long gauge blocks upto 1,000 mm as standard products.Mitutoyo operates a policy of continuous improvement that aims to provide the customer with the benefit of the latest technological advances. Therefore the company reserves the right to change any or all aspects of any product specification without notice.E-4E
