Andrew Clementsbased on the book bySYNOPSISEveryone knows that Mrs. Granger, the language artsteacher, has X-ray vision in her classroom. She’s also afanatic about the dictionary, which is hopelessly boring toone of her students Nicholas Allen. But when Nick learnsan interesting tidbit about words and where they comefrom, it inspires him to invent a new word. From now on,a pen is no longer a pen—it’s a FRINDLE.The story begins with Mrs. Granger, anelderly, distinguished teacher, gradingpapers when the mail arrives. She isinformed by the superintendent that apermanent, million dollar trust fund forcollege scholarships has been set up inher honor. Mrs. Granger passes it off asa trick until she learns that the fund wasestablished by a former student of hers,Nicholas Allen.“FRINDLE is aboutdiscovering the truenature of words, language, thought, community, learning. It’s also aboutgreat teaching and greatteachers, and about thelife that surges throughcorridors and classroomsevery school day.”Then the theatrical production flashesback ten years when Nick is starting fifth grade at LincolnElementary School. He and several of his friends weredismayed to find that their language arts teacher was to bethe dreaded Mrs. Granger, who was notorious for her longhomework assignments. Nick responded rather coolly, however, because he was known throughout his class asthe “idea man”, who could invent ways to get everyoneout of class work. Everyone was still reeling from his bugstunt last year which involved turning the thermostat upand dumping sand all over the classroom to create a beachparty. The class was so busy cleaning up, there was never anopportunity to do any work, or even to receive a homeworkassignment. All the kids in Nick’s language arts last yearwere more than confident that Nick would come up withsomething just as good this time.Curriculum ConnectionsLanguage Arts, Reading, Vocabulary,Spelling, Creative Writing, LiteratureIn the last moments of class, after Mrs. Granger had finishedher lecture on the importance of words and their definitions, and just before she was about to sentence the entire classto what was sure to be the longest homework assignmentever, Nick’s hand shot into the air. He’d come up with theperfect question to keep Mrs. Granger talking well past thering of the bell: “Where do words come from?”Mrs. Granger was not taking the bait, though, and she took this opportunityto allow Nick to teach the class, himself.Nick was to research his own questionand write up a report, in addition to thehomework that was assigned to the restof the class. This proved to be the beginning ofNick’s experiment with words, as well-Andrew Clementsas his power struggle with Mrs. Grangerover what constituted a “real word” inthe first place. It was then that Nick decided to create anew word to replace “pen”: FRINDLE. The feud betweenNick and Mrs. Granger then spread over the whole school, then the town, then throughout the entire country. Thestruggle went on and on, with neither conceding untilfinally Nick’s new word was printed in the latest edition ofthe dictionary.By the story’s end, we find that Mrs. Granger not only taughtNick about the importance of words and their origins, butalso about having the courage to stand up for himself whenhe faced opposition. In the final moments of the play, Nickthanks Mrs. Granger for the lessons, and, as a token of hisgratitude, offers her a gift that she can call by any name shechooses. FRINDLE is an imaginative, quirky tale aboutcreative thought and the power of words.LevelsRecommended for ages 8 – 13 yrs, Grades 3 – 7.Study guide and additional materials provided. The Brad Simon Organization is the exclusive booking agent forFRINDLE. Andrew Clementsbased on the book byA Note from the Artistic DirectorI was given FRINDLE to read back in 1998 by a very wise teacher. The book, at the time was bya little known author named Andrew Clements. Now years later, it is one of the most widely readchildren’s novels in the country. Joining a list that includes, “The Harry Potter Series, To Kill aMockingbird and Bridge to Terabithia.”I immediately fell in love with FRINDLE. Not only was it a great story, but it treated children withrespect. It looked at life through the wide eyes of child with an optimism that most of us forget as wegrow up. It is said that Andrew Clements books “give young readers insights and strategies for rising tothe challenges of their classrooms.” That is certainly true.It also gives us a story with a character who discovers their hidden potential and the person they mightlater become. More importantly, they stumble, they make mistakes and they fail in their efforts toachieve, learn and grow-up. In the end they succeed because they have an adult who helps them alongthe way and in the case of FRINDLE a great teacher.A GREAT TEACHER. All of us had that one teacher that made a difference in our life. The teacherwe remember who inspired us to be a better student and person. For me FRINDLE is about thoseimportant relationships in our formative years that helped make us the person we are today.FRINDLE was really a perfect fit for the Griffin Theatre Company. An intelligent piece of theatre thatnot only teaches the audience (both young and old) valuable life lessons, but does it with empathy, humor and compassion.I know you will enjoy FRINDLE as much as I do. And to that wise teacher back in 1998—who’sname, with the passage of time I have forgotten—I want to say thank you.Bill MassoliaArtistic DirectorGriffin Theatre Co.The Brad Simon Organization is the exclusive booking agent forFRINDLE. May 28, 2010Bill MassoliaGriffin Theatre Company3711 No. Ravenswood Ave.Suite 145Chicago, IL 60613Dear Bill,Frindle – a sure winner! Since I am presenting the show for the fourth year in a row youknow I obviously love the show – and your theatre company. Each year the show has soldout two houses and developed a waiting list. This is partly because the book is so widelyread, particularly here in Massachusetts where the author is from. But the show is booked bymany of the same teachers every year so they certainly agree with me that it’s a high qualityperformance experience for their students. Their evaluations are unfailingly laudatory. My presentation of Frindle this past March resulted in the single biggest reservation I’ve everhad in my career as a presenter. The principal of a school in Southborough, MA called andasked if he could bring the whole school – all 375 students and teachers – to a performance.I had enough room because the shows had just gone on sale. This made him – andneedless to say, ME – very happy. The cast is delightful and very talented and they are always easy to work with. I think thatthe Griffin Theatre’s Frindle should be the cornerstone of every presenter’s educationalseries. I can recommend it without reservation.Cordially,Chris BrownChristine Heaton BrownChris Brown Presents LLCPHONE:(978) 710 327454 Georgia Ave.FAX:(978) 710 6251Lowell,Lowell, MA 01851cbrownpresents@gmail.com

Your rendition ofthe popular book Frindle by Andrew Clement made the students’ visit at thetheatre an unforgettable experience. The characters were intelligentlyportrayed, the pace was perfect for our audience, and the humor wasirresistible.Past PresidentMary BuellJoy DarlingRobert H. Green, M.D.Michael HarkinsEdward HoMaynard LawDiane PadelfordKay StoverLaVerne TancillAs a result of this artistic experience, many teachers were able to use morecreative teaching approaches in follow-up projects. For instance, theyengaged their students in exciting experiments with words that resulted inoriginal classroom dictionaries containing new words, definitions, andillustrations created by students, as well as in-depth studies of word structures.Frindle also highlighted the immeasurable value of a good teacher through thecharacter of Mrs. Granger and the rapport she had with her gifted student,Nick. At a time when teachers are facing so many great challenges, theunderlying message of the play was deeply appreciated. As always, your choice of topic was wise and your artistic decisions wereingenious. I look forward to another opportunity to present Griffin Theatre.Sincerely,Hélène TrudeauExecutive Director(562) 916-130012700 Center Court Drive Cerritos, California 90703 www.friendsofaecc.com
