C!. !!!!!iP75th Anniversary Souvenir. This little souvenir booklet is dedicated to all those who have workedwith the firm since it started. A family business operating in a villagemust be especially concerned with people, when not only the employees, but their families as well, are known.Over the years we have had some difficult times- two world wars, tworecessions- from the second of which we are only just recovering. But wehave had some happy social occasions too; and the photographs weshow here record some of them. Hopefully they will revive memories ofgood times spent together among friends. Those who have not been with us very long and are not included in thephotographs, can look forward to seeing themselves in the centenaryedition!Jack Tannerdl. ;;;;;;fl-.::iColonel Sir Gilbert Tanner,Sydney TannerHarold TannerDSO, DL. J.P.As this is a personal selection it is subject to errors and omissions. Maybethose shortcomings will not be noticed in the overall impression of afamily gathering spreading through three or four generations. We hopethat the spirit which has enlivened the past years can be generated in theyears to come.ROGER TANNERChairmanAugust 1986

Waterside Mill was built in 1836; and so, by coincidence, is 150 yearsold this year. Buckley Bros. ran it prosperously until 1911. St. Mary'sChurch, Greenfield was a fruit of this prosperity. It was sold in Aprilof that year to the four founders of Tanner Bros. whose family hadhitherto been managers of R.R. Whitehead, Royal George Mills,Greenfield since 1842 (Christ Church, Friezland, was built'by thatfirm.)

Most of 1911 was spent clearing out the mill of Spinning machineryand preparing it for weaving. It was not until 1912 that weaving gotunder way.The "new" weaving shed c.1972BrianJonesThe "old" weaving shed full of Platt Bros. looms. Now used fordoubling.WilfredSlaterBertCrabtree

BALANCE SHEETThe trading account for 1912-1913 shows a loss of 39. By 1914-15 itimproves to a profit of 3,607.The total cost of bobbins for the year 1913-14 was 8. Today they cost 8 each. But prices are relative, as an average mill wage then wasabout 1.50.113ff /.3 .4'.ft,/04,t::zrIl,/.!y-43 / t. 3.r .rII '/O /,:7.f/r 2.//./33 4" 2,.!fZ /y. /0;t .r!'.llfiJ L (l.la) 6 ,2. ./.71.llt.//.:4·./l.L,t/ .t;J. ,f , .r /;J/.- j/.lY, /J-rJ3/j // 1 s,(,///a,T' i.;,,. . .h.f · : · i.r I n,- l?y J',P/ /fi -- -- -- -I/, J,I . .t?.ro//.r, l.3,/!: /i'?iIfl /Y 2. TannerDuring the 1920's the spread of motor transport was rapid; and in 192 the firm acquired Warth Mill, Diggle for the sole purpose of producingtyre fabric. In its heyday it was producing nearly 50 tonnes of tyre fabricevery week. It soon established a reputation for quality - with verydemanding customers - under Jim Winterbottom, who had becomegeneral manager; (and who invented a method of stretching the fabric bydesigning a cone roller on doubling machinery). Fifty years later we arestill arguably the best producers in the trade, even with changes in rawmaterials, through rayon and nylon. Indeed, during the last twentyyears, we have had hardly any rolls rejected, which does great credit toall concerned.
