HSA SPELLERS SHINE ATCONCEPT SPELLING BEEThe winners of our school spelling beewent on to compete in the annual Concept Spelling Bee at University of Illinois Chicago on December 10th and asper usual, they did not disappoint. Ourspellers took home the gold and wonfirst place overall in the 6th-8th gradedivision and second place in the 3rd5th grade division. This is the fourthyear that our savvy spellers representedHSA Belmont as a winning school andbrought home a trophy. Congratulations to Ms. Petrella and Ms. Mann,who coached and accompanied our students. Winners included eighth gradersAmya Washington (pictured) and Khiyla Pittman (pictured) and 5th gradersKenya Smith and Ashuntice Wilburn.Rockin’ Robotics students (from left): Jerrel Alexander, Danielle Dunn, Reimani Rodriguez, Giovanni Nava, Jason Alvarado, Heavenly McIntyre, Tamya Washington, and Faith AntunezROBOTICS STARSOur FLL robotics team, theEagle Bots, had an amazingyear, to say the least. Afterout-performing at the regionals and advancing to theSTATE championship, theEagle Bots went on to place28th out of 64 teams in thestate-wide competition. NEW YEAR FOCUSES ON HEALTH & WELLNESSThe first annual Health & Wellness Weekwas a fun and educational way to learnabout keeping healthy and happy in thenew year. Themed days and activitiesmarked a week-long celebration of howto make healthy choices fun for thewhole family. Students were encouragedto try new foods that tasted good andwere good for them, amp up their exercise routine and encouraged to get plentyof rest with Friday pajama day. The activities culminated with a fantasticHealth and Wellness Fair that brought inlocal representatives from XSport Fitness, Esperanza Chicago, CommunityFirst Medical Center and many more. Attendees also got a taste of delicious cuisine from The Chef in the Hood, RamonaBaptiste, who created an amzing veggiestir-fry and participated in FREE yogaand group fitness classes. Way to puthealth first HSA Belmont!3

HONOR ROLL STUDENTS’ THEATRE EXPERIENCEAs a special treat for achieving at the highest academic level, sixty our honor roll students traveled downtown to DePaul’s Merle Reskin Theatre and fell in love with Night Runner. The playtells the tale of Cora, a young slave who escapes plantation life after her family has been tornapart. She ishelped alongher journeyby the nightrunner, aHarriet Tubman-likecharacterthat leadsslaves tofreedom.Live theatrecertainlysuits ourstudents!7th GRADERS ARE AMAZED AT ADLER PLANETARIUMThe 7th gradeclass got to experience the world ofastronomy andastrophysics during their visit tothe Adler Planetarium. Futurespace explorersinvestigated solarsystems and missions to the moonat Chicago’s veryown premierespace destination.4

WE HAVE A CHOICE AND A VOICENational School ChoiceWeek is the nation’slargest-ever educationcelebration. The weeklong event providesschool, individuals andorganizations with theopportunity to celebrate the benefits of alltypes of choices in education— from traditional public schools topublic charter schools,magnet schools, onlineacademies privateschools and homeschooling. We honoredour choice by creatinga NSCW photo boothand our kids had ablast!5

MILWUAKEEMATH CAMPMOLDS YOUNGMINDSOur dedicated teachers and students didn’t stop going just becauseit’s holiday break. Instead, theycame together as mathletes and embarked on an excursion to Milwaukee Math and Science Academy forthree fun-filled days of learning,bonding and excitement. Title 1math teacher Mr. Kaya, Mr. Coffee,Ms. Daos, Mr. Stone, Mrs. Durstand Mr. Jusupov took 28 of our students over state lines where theywere immersed in advancedmath study sessions, creative gamesand outdoor activities for a wellrounded session that kept theirbrains working during their timeoff. Kudos to our kids and awesometeachers for putting learning first!6

HSA BELMONT BUZZWinter ConcertOur first musical performance of the year,led by Ms. Arnold, gave the whole schoolsome holiday spirit. Our melodious studentssang their hearts out to traditional holidaysongs and brought all of their hard workthroughout the semester to life. Students andparents alike eagerly watched the return ofour music program to the school.
