St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church27101 W. Chicago St., Redford, MI 48239(313) 937-1500 office@strobertbellarmine.com www.strobertbellarmine.comSeptember 20, 201525th Sunday in Ordinary TimeThe fruit of righteousness is sown in peace for those who cultivate peace (2ndreading from James)St. Robert Bellarmine Parish Familywelcomes all those new to our parish. If you have been attending Mass hereand would like to be registered in theparish, please stop by or call the parishoffice. We look forward to meeting youand telling you about your new parish.Mass ScheduleTuesday: 11:00 a.m.Wednesday: 8:30 a.m.Friday: 8:30 a.m.Saturday: 4:00 p.m.Sunday: 6:30, 8:30 & 10:30 a.m.ReconciliationSaturday: 2:30 p.m.Weekly ReadingsWis 2:12, 17-20Jas 3:16--4:3Mk 9:30-37Monday:Eph 4:1-7, 11-13Mt 9:9-13Tuesday:Ezr 6:7-8, 12b, 14-20Lk 8:19-21Wednesday: Ezr 9:5-9Lk 9:1-6Thursday: Hg 1:1-8Lk 9:7-9Friday:Hg 2:1-9Lk 9:18-22Saturday:Zec 2:5-9, 14-15aLk 9:43b-45Sunday:Nm 11:25-29Jas 5:1-6Mk 9:38-43, 45, 47-48We are now in the heart of Mark’sGospel. His Gospel originally may havebeen written to strengthen Christians inRome who were suffering persecution(including St. Peter) from the Roman emperor. Mark is concerned to haveChristians maintain their fidelity to Christ even amidst severe persecution. After all, Jesus did tell his disciples to expect persecution because He himselffreely embraced the suffering of the cross as the pathway to resurrection.Today’s Gospel repeats last Sunday’s Gospel in this regard. However, Mark continually emphasizes the simple reality that Jesus’disciples very often just don’t get it, that is, they continually fail to recognizethe reality of the cross: “they did not understand (Jesus’) saying, and they wereafraid to question Him.” Last Sunday, Jesus asked his disciples a question: whodo people say the Son of Man is? Who do you say that I am? In today’sGospel, Jesus questions them about what they were discussing along the way?His Passion? No, not quite. They were discussing which one of them was thegreatest. Talk about not getting the point. But Jesus patiently sits down, “sitsthem down,” and explains that being first in God’s eyes is not about glory andhonor, but about humility and wise living. Such wisdom entails the wisdom ofthe cross, that true greatness consists in a living relationship with God that islived out in service to others, as Jesus will say of Himself: The Son of Man didnot come to be served, but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for themany.Sunday:Our second reading from James encourages us to apply Jesus’ messagewisely. James is a kind of Christian wisdom book, challenging us to live wiselyin view of our relationship to God and to each other. God’s wisdomdemonstrates many of God’s attributes such as peace, gentleness and mercy. On the other hand, our ambition, covetousness, and passions lead almostalways to the death of our spirit. No wonder Jesus tried to turn the minds ofHis disciples to actions that would reverse their arguing over who was thegreatest. By putting a child in front of them, Jesus humbled their ambition bybluntly stating: If anyone wishes to be first, s/he should be the last of all andthe servant of all.Following the wisdom of the cross as proposed by Jesus, and living wisely asJames calls us to do, leads to a righteousness pleasing to God, a life of rightrelationships between ourselves and God and with each other. The fruit ofsuch righteousness is sown in peace for those who cultivate peace. Notethat true peace needs to be cultivated, care-fully and patiently, like a gardeneror a farmer at work. Then we will experience God’s peace-full life within us;(Continued on page 3)

He shows us just howinseparable the bond is between concern for nature, justice for the poor, commitment to society, and interior peace.”Go, therefore, and makedisciples of all nations (Mt. 28:19)By virtue of our Baptism, we are all disciplesand as disciples we are to follow Jesus’ partingwords to us “Go, therefore, and make disciples ofall nations.” He was not just talking to hiscurrent disciples; He was talking to his futuredisciples –Us. “The ministry of every baptizedperson is discipleship.” (Team RCIA by Nick Wager).Discipleship is neither Fr. Richard’s nor my sole responsibility. Theresponsibility lies with the whole parish family. Do you know someone whohas expressed interest in learning more about the Catholic faith? Do you havefamily members and/or friends who were baptized but did not receive thesacraments of Holy Eucharist and/or Confirmation? Do you have family and/or friends who see you demonstrate what Jesus taught us by your words oractions and want to know how to be more like you?The RCIA Process introduces an individual to the person of Jesus throughthe life of the Parish. “And the life of our parish is the plan for introducing anindividual to Jesus.” (Team RCIA by Nick Wager). The RCIA Process begins Thursday, September 24th, 2015. Please call LauraScanlan at (313) 937-1400 ext. 114 for further details.Let’s be disciples and make disciples of all nations. What proof is there in the world that people don’t accept Jesus’ teaching on power and ambition?

Rev 7:16 Congress is onceagain determining the budget for nutritional programs. Here our some reasons why aid to those in need is soimportant: The Special Supplemental NutritionProgram for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)provides quality nutrition education and services, serving nearly 9 million women and young children.· Participation in WIC dramatically improves Healthy Eating indexscores for households.· Infants receiving WIC are more likely to be of a normal weight.· Children whose mothers received proper nutrition duringpregnancy through their participation in WIC have bettervocabulary test scores than children whose mothers did notreceive benefits.· The majority of families receiving WIC benefits have incomesbelow the poverty level ( 22,113 for a family of four).Look for more information at www.bread.org.St. Robert Bellarmine Parish Financial ReportGifts to the Catholic Services Appealsupport the work of the Christian WorshipOffice, which certifies pastoral musicians inthe Archdiocese of Detroit and coordinatesthe Archdiocesan Chorus along with othermusic ministries. For more information about CSA-fundedprograms, ministries, and services, please goto www.AOD.org.Electronic DonationProgramEnrollment forms are now available, atthe parish office or in the pamphlet rack inthe vestibule, for the e-Envelope Serviceprogram.
