Sacred Heart and Saint Thomas More—August 30th 2020—-22nd Sunday in Ordinary TimeSaint Robert Bellarmine (Oct. 4,1542 – Sept.17,1621) was anItalian Jesuit and a Cardinal of theChurch. He was named a saint in1930. He was also one of only 36theologians to be named a Doctorof the Church. Saint Robert wasborn the third of ten children, theson of noble, but impoverished, parents, Vincenzo Bellarmino andhis wife Cinzia Cervini, who wasthe sister of Pope Marcellus II.His mother was dedicated to almsgiving, prayer, meditation, and fasting. As a boy, Robertknew Virgil by heart and composed a number of poemsin Italian and Latin. One of his hymns, on Mary Magdalene isincluded in today’s Roman Breviary. Robert Bellarmine wasone of the most important figures in the Counter-Reformation.When he was ordained in 1570, the study of Church historyand the fathers of the Church had been neglected, and so hedevoted his teaching to these two subjects, as well as toScripture, in order to systematize Church doctrine against theattacks of the Protestant Reformers. He entered the Jesuitnovitiate in 1560 and was the first Jesuit to become a professorat Louvain. His most famous work is his three volume Disputations on the Controversies of the ChristianFaith. His sections on the temporal power of the pope and therole of the laity became quite controversial, incurring the angerof monarchs in England and France by arguing against thedivine-right-of-kings theory, and his theory of the indirectpower of the pope in temporal affairs incurred the ire of thePope Sixtus V.Even so, he was made a Cardinal by Pope Clement VIII,because “he had not his equal for learning.” Bellarminebecame Cardinal Theologian to Pope Clement VIII, andpublished his Catechism (in two versions, the short and the fullversion) which has been translated to 50 languages, becomingone of the greatest bestsellers and the official teaching ofthe Catholic Church in the 17th to 19th centuries. St. RobertBellarmine also published his commentary on each of thePsalms. An English translation from the Latin was published in1866.While he occupied apartments in the Vatican, Bellarminelived an austere life. He limited his household expenses towhat was barely essential, eating only the food available to thepoor. He was known to have ransomed a soldier who haddeserted from the army and he used the hangings of his roomsto clothe poor people, remarking, “The walls won’t catchcold.” One of his contemporaries described him as "a little leanold man" who lived "more retired,” than the Cardinals of histime who lived like princes in stately residences. When PopeSixtus V died in 1590, the Count of Olivares wrote to KingPhilip III of Spain that: "Bellarmine . would not do for aPope, for he is mindful only of the interests of the Church andis unresponsive to the reasons of princes."During his lifetime, Saint Robert earned a reputation asboth a learned professor and a gifted preacher. He was the firstJesuit to teach at the university, where the subject of his coursewas the Summa Theologica of Thomas Aquinas, who taughtthat the Eucharist is “necessary for salvation”, and “withoutthis sacrament, man cannot have health of spiritual life.”1St. Robert’s teaching on the Eucharist remains as true and note-worthy in his time as it is today, especially in this Year of theEucharist: Take and eat: This is My Body. W eigh carefully, dear brethren, the force of those words. Suppose a princepromised one of you a hundred gold pieces, and in fulfillmentof his word sent a beautiful sketch of the coins, I wonder whatyou would think of his liberality? And suppose that when youcomplained, the donor said, “Sir, your astonishment is out ofplace, as the painted coins you received may very properly beconsidered (substitutes for) true crowns by the figure of speechcalled metonymy,” would not everybody feel that he was making fun of you and your picture? Now Our Lord promised togive us His flesh for our food. The bread which I shall giveyou, He said, is My flesh for the life of the world. If you arguethat the bread may be looked on as a figure of His flesh, youare arguing like the prince and making a mockery of God’spromises. A wonderful gift indeed that would be, in whichEternal Wisdom, Truth, Justice, and Goodness deceived us, itshelpless pensioners, and turned our dearest hopes to derision. That I may show you how just and righteous is the position wehold, let us suppose that the last day has come and that ourdoctrine of the Eucharist has turned out to be false andabsurd. Our Lord now asks us reproachfully: “Why did youbelieve thus of My Sacrament? Why did you adore the host?”may we not safely answer him: “O Lord, if we were wrong inthis, it was You who deceived us. We heard Your word, THISIS MY BODY, and was it a crime for us to believe You? Wewere confirmed in our mistake by a multitude of signs andwonders which could have had You only for their author. YourChurch with one voice cried out to us that we were right, andin believing as we did we but followed in the footsteps of allYour saints and holy ones.During his retirement, Saint Robert wrote several shortbooks intended to help ordinary people in their spirituallife: The Mind's Ascent to God (1614), which was translatedinto English as Jacob's Ladder (1638), The Art of DyingWell (1619), and The Seven Words on the Cross. Bellarmineretired to the Jesuit college of St. Andrew in Rome. He diedon 17 September 1621, aged 78. He was canonized by PopePius XI in 1930, and the following year, he was declareda Doctor of the Church. His feast day is September 17. He isthe Patron Saint of catechists and catechumens.Robert Bellarmine devoted his life to the study of Scriptureand Catholic doctrine. His writings help us understand that thereal source of our faith is not a set of doctrines, but the personof Jesus still living in the Church today. Vatican II assures usin The Church in the Modern World, #10 that: “There aremany realities which do not change and which have theirultimate foundation in Christ, who is the same yesterday andtoday, yes, and forever” (Heb 13:8). Saint Robert’s teaching onthe Most Blessed Sacrament reminds us of this reality. TheEucharist is the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of ourLord Jesus Christ. He said it at the Last Supper. He says it tous today. We must obey His command to “Take and Eat” theBread of Life. “This bread is my flesh, which I will give forthe life of the world (and) unless you eat the flesh of the Sonof Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoevereats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I willraise them up at the last day. For my flesh is real food and myblood is real drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks myblood remains in me, and I in them” (Jn 6:51, 53-56).

Our parishes have been blessed withthe presence of SMA fathers, who come to the United States, especially during the summer months, to assist diocesanpriests in their mission of evangelization and formation. To learn more about this mission, visit the SMA website atwww.smafathers.org.The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a pr ocess developed by the Catholic Chur ch for pr ospectiveconverts to Catholicism who are above the age of infant baptism. Candidates are gradually introduced to aspects ofCatholic beliefs and practices during a year-long study which culminates in the celebration of their Baptism, FirstCommunion and Confirmation at the Easter Vigil each year. Unfortunately, because of the initial closing of the Churchesduring the COVID virus, candidates in the diocese of Boston could not celebrate these sacraments at Easter. But, becausethey have prepared intensely for their entrance into the Church, Cardinal Sean has designated Pastors as the Minister ofthese Sacraments. This weekend, we rejoice with our collaborative candidates, Caley and Lainie, as they receive theSacraments of Initiation. (Caley’s son, Ricky, will also be baptized during this Mass. Sacred Heart and Saint Thomas More—August 30th 2020—-22nd Sunday in Ordinary TimeIn Ordinary Time, the readings of the day are meant toteach us more about what it means to be a disciple of JesusChrist. It is a time to grow stronger and more courageous aswe strive to follow the Way, the Truth and the Life of JesusChrist in our world today. Today’s Readings remind us thatfollowing Jesus is not easy. Rather the Christian life demandspatience, discernment, understanding, and obedience toGod’s Will in our lives. Ordinary Time usually is a time tochange, a time to “be transformed by the renewal of yourmind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what isgood and pleasing and perfect” (Rom 12:2).But, as the words of the Prophet Jeremiah demonstrate, obedience to God’s will is difficult in any age. Jeremiah isfeeling “duped” by the Lord. To understand his feelings, wemust look to the beginning of this chapter to learn that“Pashhur the son of Immer, the priest and chief governor inthe house of the Lord, heard that Jeremiah prophesied againsthim. Pashhur struck Jeremiah the prophet, and put him in thestocks that were in the high gate of Benjamin, which was bythe house of the LORD” (Jer 20:1-2). The stocks were aform of scaffold in which prisoners were detained in acrooked or confined position which produced crampedmuscles. In obedience to the Lord, poor Jeremiah had onlytold Pashhur what God had commanded him to say.Obviously, Pashhur took exception to the Lord’s word, which is understandable given that Jeremiah had told himthat destruction was sure to come when the Babylonianscompletely conquered Pashhur and his people. The Lordsaid: “And you, Pashhur You shall go to Babylon, andthere you shall die” (v.6). Not words anyone wants to hear! The lesson for us is clear: there will be times, if we trulywish to serve the Lord, when we will need to speak wordsthat others do not, will not, accept. No one wants to becorrected, admonished for his or her words or actions. If theymock the speaker, then they can deny his message. Even still,we must obey God’s Law of Love, which instructs us that:“If your brother or sister sins against you, rebuke them; andif they repent, forgive them. Even if they sin against youseven times in a day and seven times come back to yousaying ‘I repent,’ you must forgive them.” (Lk 17: 3-4).Yes, we may, like Jeremiah, suffer humiliation, scorn andmockery because of our faithful obedience to God’s Will andWord. But, even when we are most discouraged and rejected,we must also be like Jeremiah, who, even though he sufferspersecution for his obedience to the Lord, he still must speak, because the ‘fire of love for Christ burns in our hearts,’ andwill not be extinguished until we speak the words of life toour neighbors. We must keep the promise of Jesus in mind:“Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you andfalsely say all kinds of evil against you because ofme. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward inheaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophetswho were before you” (Mt 5:12).Like many of us, when God called Jeremiah, he probablyimagined a life full of light and love. He had heardYahweh say, “I am with you, to deliver you,” and imaginedbetter things than he has experienced. When we agree tobecome a Christian disciple, we must understand the wordsof Saint Paul: “what we suffer now is nothingcompared to the glory he will reveal to us later” (Rom 8:18).Jeremiah eventually saw his prophecies fulfilled and heglorified God for His Goodness to him. When we are feelingabandoned by God, or discouraged by our lack of progress inour spiritual growth, remember the words of Saint Paul:“Patient endurance is what you need now, so that you willcontinue to do God’s will. Then you will receive all that hehas promised” (NIV Heb 10:36). No matter what difficultieswe endure, God’s promise is as true today as it was inJeremiah’s time: “I am with you to deliver you'” (Jer 1:19).Today’s Gospel proclaims another reminder that theChristian life is not an easy one. Jesus tells us, His disciples, that: “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to savehis life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sakewill find it. What profit would there be for one to gain thewhole world and forfeit his life” (Mt 16:24-26). Paulunderstood this when he said, “Woe is unto me if I preachnot the Gospel” (1 Cor 9:1).There is another lesson we can learn from today’s Gospel. When Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go toJerusalem and “suffer greatly from the elders, the chiefpriests, and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day beraised” Peter took Jesus aside and began to rebuke him.Peter was so distressed that he exclaimed: “God forbid, Lord!No such thing shall ever happen to you.” If anyone of uswere in Peter’s place, we would probably be as horrified asPeter was to hear Jesus predict His own death. Peter hadplaced all of his faith, hope and love in Jesus. He had givenup all that he held dear to follow Him. And, now, Peterprobably felt “duped,” like Jeremiah once did. After all, hehad just professed his heartfelt belief that Jesus was theChrist, the Messiah for whom Israel had been waiting forcenturies (v.16), but Jesus is telling him that He will soondie. Peter probably was asking himself: “Who will rescue usnow from our enemies?”Jesus had just complimented Peter, telling him that Godhad revealed the truth of Jesus to him. So, when Jesus saysHe will suffer and die, Peter thinks that he has the right torebuke Jesus. But, when Peter “begins” to rebuke Him, Jesuscuts him off, calling Peter “Satan.” Though a moment before, Peter spoke as a messenger of God, now he spoke as amessenger of Satan. Jesus did not mean that Peter was Satan, but rather that he was thinking the way humans do, not theway God does. When Peter let his mind settle on the “thingsof men” instead of the “things of God,” Satan took advantageof it, and Peter could not accept a suffering Messiah, so herebuked Jesus.Origen, an early Christian theologian, suggested that:“Jesus was saying to Peter: ‘Peter, your place is behind me,not in front of me. It is your place to follow me in the way Ichoose, not to try to lead me in the way you would like me togo.’” And, here is another lesson for us today. We must follow the way of the Lord, even when His Way is not our way.We must “not conform ourselves to this age,” but rather betransformed by the Holy Spirit, using His gifts to discern, understand, obey and patiently endure the difficulties of thislife. “May the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ enlighten theeyes of our hearts” so that the truth of the Apostle James canbe ours: “Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive thecrown of life that the Lord has promised to those who lovehim” (Js 1:5).4
