Clay bricks are either pressed or extruded. The indentation in the middle of apressed clay brick is called a frog.Mortar goes into the frog and core holes.Extruded clay bricks are manufactured withholes to lighten the brick, ensuring when fired, they cook evenly. This also allows for improvedbond strength and greater earthquake resistance.Clay bricks are made from acombination of natural clay bearingsoils, minerals and lime.A slurry brick is a claybrick that has a face colourdifferent to the colour ofthe brick body. This isachieved by the applicationof a seperate clay coatingduring the manufacturingprocess. The slurry coat isfired in for life.Standard brick height in NZ is 76mm.We also supply clay bricks that are40mm, 50mm, 119 and 162mm in height.BRICKBASICSReclaimed by San Selmo230 x 76 x 70mmClay bricks have a front and a back. The front is called the face or stretcher.Clay bricks don’t need paint, sealing or any other treatments tomaintain their aesthetics and durability. The colour is fired intothe bricks so it lasts a lifetime and will not fade. They are costeffective and low maintenance.12Brick insulates in a way most materials do not. By followingenergy efficient design principles and combining bricks withinsulation, your home will keep warm in winter and cool insummer, so you’ll love coming home.101Standard brick depth is70mm up to 110mm in NZ.A colour through brick is a clay brickthat is the same colour through theentire brick body; from face to back.Colonial Red by Austral Bricks230 x 76 x 70mmStandard brick length is 230mm in NZand varies with trends. Our Corso rangeby San Selmo features bricks that are500mm long!Clay bricks are a sustainable building option. Made fromorganic minerals found in naturally abundant sources of clay;clay brick’s long-lasting life cycle offers ongoing environmentaland health benefits. Durable, re-usable, free from contaminantsand naturally resistant to pests or fire, clay brick is safe to live in,making it the ultimate material in responsible and economicalhome building design.Clay bricks are fully reusable. They are one of the very fewmaterials that can be reused (not just recycled) with all theiroriginal qualities intact. And if they are consigned to land fill, clay bricks are chemically inert and can’t pollute groundwateror contaminate soil.13

HOW TOCHOOSEA BRICKCOLOUR OFTHE BRICKCOLOUR OFTHE MORTARSIZE OFTHE BRICKTEXTURE OFTHE BRICKWe know that when our customers choose bricks, it is predominately on colour. But moreimportantly we know this choice cannot be made in isolation. Designers use a scaleknown as “60, 30, 10”, it’s simply a definition for the proportions of a design space.60%30%10%2414Designing your new home is an exciting experience as you discover the multitude of designideas at your disposal. The Brickery team will help to make the experience as satisfying aspossible. We recommend you use at least three of these selection tools available to you:Brochures & WebsitesA great way to narrow down your selection but remember colours and textures are only indicative. For the facade of yourhome this is the exteriorwall, the largest proportionof your design space hasthe largest impact. For the façade of yourhome this is the roof. For the façade of yourhome this is the gutter, fascia, joinery and doors.FOUR STEPS TO SELECTING AN EXTERIOR COLOUR SCHEME1How toselect yourbricksDisplay MaterialSome builders have sample boards in their offices, these are a good way to view the bricks.Selection CentresVisit The Brickery Selection Centres to view display walls. We also have tools such as window joineryand roof colour swatches to help with your selection.Sample PacksYou can request a sample from us which we can send to you. This will be from a recent or current batchand will give a good indication of brick colour. Our sample will have a batch number so you know whatyour house will look like (remember bricks vary from batch to batch). Please ensure the batch number isquoted at time of ordering. If we have since run out, then we will send you a new sample.Recently Constructed HousesWe can provide you a list of recently constructed houses that you can view from the street.Choose brick colourChoose mortar colour and style3Choose roofSelecting the fascia, gutter, joinery and doors to complete the pictureConsidering a blended brick? Be aware we endeavour to always showa light and dark brick however the final blend will not be in equalproportions and there will be a range of colours between the light and dark.Consider your mortar colour and joint finish as this can have a dramaticaffect on your homes overall appearance.15

MORTAR COLOURBOND PATTERNWhen it comes to mortar (what binds the bricks together) you will need to considerthe colour and finish, as both will have a striking impact on the look of your bricks.Mortar constitutes approximately 15% of the brick facade colour.A bond is the pattern in which bricks are laid. The most common bond is Stretcher Bondwhich consists of courses of full bricks where every course is offset half a brick from thecourse below. Stacked and Flemish are also popular and achieve an alternative look.An off-white mortar between darker coloured bricks will add contrast and highlightthe shape of each brick. Whereas matching mortar colour to the brick will soften thebrickwork. Please confirm with your builder or brick layer what their mortar colouringoffering is before you make your final decision.NaturalOff WhiteCharcoalBlackStretcher BondMORTAR FINISHESWhen it comes to mortar finishes, it’s all about the lighting. There are four commonfinishes; raked, rolled, flush and struck.Stack BondedA raked finish is recessed, creating deep shadows in the horizontal mortar joint, bringing out the lines of the brick work. A rolled finish* also creates shadow lines, butthey are subtler. A flush finish doesn’t allow for any shadows in the joint, giving thewall a flatter, more unified look. A struck joint gives a neat, well ordered look.Raked16RolledFlush* A rolled joint is recommended for all slurry coated clay bricks.StruckFlemish Bond17

Clay Brick and PaverManufacturersAssociationIt is important to remember that any issues regarding the quality, texture or colour ofthe bricks must be addressed with the brick supplier prior to the laying of the bricks.A brick laid is a brick accepted. Thoroughly check all pallets upon delivery.Clay bricks marketed in New Zealand must meetthe requirements of NZS4455, the manufacturingstandard. This standard mainly refers to the size andcompressive strength of the product. It does notmention, chipping, cracks, bowing or colour, all issues to dowith whether a brick is considered a ‘First Grade ‘ product or a‘Common’. This will vary depending on the texture and type ofbrick product, check with your brick supplier. Clay bricks aretransported great distances and may be handled many timesprior to delivery to site. Minor edge chipping in some brickscan occur, especially smooth faced bricks; this is to be expectedand managed by the bricklayer in the laying process. Generally,a First Grade brick should have a face and one end free ofsurface defects; however the nature of the brick product beinglaid must always be a factor in this regard.Brochures, websites, and display panels provide an indicationof the brick product at the time they were created, which maybe two years old. Clay bricks are a natural product that maychange depending on where the clay is sourced and how itis fired at the time of manufacture – check with your bricksupplier for recent product samples.BlendingBrick is a finishing product and therefore it is essential thatthe bricklayer thoroughly blends the bricks in order that aneven spread of colour is achieved over the face of the wall.Depending upon where the bricks were positioned in the kiln, will have a bearing on the colour of the brick, which is why itis important for the bricklayer to select bricks from at least 3pallets to get as good a colour mix as they can. Step away fromthe wall and check regularly. Obvious pockets of colour on abrick wall are unacceptable and devalue the dwelling. Our home, here you will find ourbricks, technical information andlinks to our social media pagesfor inspiration.thebrickery.co.nzExplore a journey in style withAustral Bricks (who also happento be one of our partners).Austral Bricks has a proudhistory of brick making spanningover 100 years!Monier can trace its heritage inNew Zealand back to 1862 whenit commenced manufacturingin New Lynn, Auckland. Overthe years it has supplied claybrick products to the New Zealandconstruction market and ourproducts are seen in some of NewZealand’s most iconic buildings.australbricks.com.aupgh.com.auKeeping Bricks DryIt is important to prevent bricks becoming saturated, particularly during the winter months. Saturated brickworkcan aggravate any salts that may be present, resulting in whitedeposits on the surface, which can be long-term. Therefore, keep the top of all pallets covered with plastic, and where bricksmay be stacked around the site, keep directly off the groundand cover with plastic also.Freshly laid veneers, (less than 6 hours) must be protected fromrain to prevent a possible change in the mortar colour. The toprow of all un finished brickwork must be covered in plastic, ifrain is imminent.Guide to tolerances, materials and workmanship innew residential construction 2015The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE)3.2 Clay brick and masonry veneerThe normal viewing position distance for internal and external exposed architectural masonry feature walls is 6.1 m (see Inspectingsurfaces and fixtures). (ASTM C90-1418) From closer distances, chipping of edges on bricks is acceptable provided the total length of chips per brick is no more than10% of the perimeter length of the brick and;- For 95% of the bricks the chips are no longer than 3 mm from edges and 6 mm from corners, and;- For the remaining 5% of the bricks the chips are no longer than 6 mm from edges and 9.5 mm from corners.3031
