Size not a major factor in church growthMENUwww.churchscouts.orgSend to friendBRIEFING 2100 Largest ChurchesTwin Cities Metro Minnesota– Has been updated by Briefing 7 –This briefing is for pastors and church boards, alisting the 100 largest churches in the Twin Citiesand an analysis of effect of size on church growthFebruary 2017All Briefings – and more – are online at www.churchscouts.org2

Church Scouts Briefing #2 – Two-thirds of churches in 5-year decline100 Largest Churches in Twin CitiesTAKEAWAY 1 - List of 100 Largest ChurchesThe 100 largest churches in the Twin Cities are comprised of 60 Catholic churches and40 Protestant churches, together having weekly attendance of about 277,000 people, which is approximately 36% of total metro church attendance.A list of the largest 100 churches is attached, including attendance data from CityVision’s Master File of Twin Cities Churches.TAKEAWAY 2 - Catholic churches large, Protestant smallThere are 3,344 churches in the Twin Cities known and tracked by City Vision. There areno doubt more churches, particularly home churches, that have been recently formed orare so small that they are undetected. The Twin Cities church scene is characterized by large Catholic churches and smallProtestant churches. Generally, Protestants are not much aware of Catholic churches,Catholics are not much aware of Protestant churches, and others hardly notice churchesat all.The average weekly attendance in Twin Cities Catholic churches is 1,075. The averagein Protestant churches is 162. Therefore, any analysis of the effect of size on overallchurch growth is meaningful only when Catholic and Protestant churches are viewedseparately.TAKEAWAY 3 - List of 100 Largest Protestant ChurchesViewed separately, the 100 largest Protestant churches have combined weekly attendance of about 168,000 people, which is approximately 22% of total metro Protestantchurch attendance.Weekly attendance at these individual church sites range from roughly 700 to 7,000, with1,700 average.A list of the 100 Largest Protestant churches is attached, including attendance data.Forty-one of the largest 100 Protestant churches are part of multi-site organizations. In total, there are 152 multi-site churches in the Twin Cities. Briefing #3 in March willprovide a listing and analysis of multi-site churches.TAKEAWAY 4 - Three Twin Cities churches among nation’s largestEach year Outreach Magazine and LifeWay Research compiles a List of the 100 Largest Protestant Churches in America. Three Twin Cities churches are on the list: EagleBrook Church (Rank 11 with 21,010 attendance), River Valley Church (Rank 75 with6,319 attendance) and Hosanna Church (Rank 92 with 5,513 attendance).More Briefings for Twin Cities pastors and church boards at www.churchscouts.org/briefingsPage 2

Church Scouts Briefing #2 – Two-thirds of churches in 5-year declineNote: This high visibility national list does not explain why it routinely omits the largestchurch in America (Lakewood Church in Houston, televangelist Joel Osteen, attendance43,500) .The largest church auditorium in the Twin Cities is Grace Church Eden Prairie (4,200seats). The largest church auditorium in America is Lakewood Church Houston (16,800seats).TAKEAWAY 5 - Less than 1-in-5 attend church during weekPopulation of the Twin Cities metro is approximately 3,500,000. Totaled data reportedfrom 3,344 churches to City Vision combine to show that total weekly church attendanceis about 761,000, which interprets to 21% of the population. However, to account forover-reporting bias (discussed by CHART 2.1), 18% is probably more realistic. The overall attendance decline between 2010 and 2105 shown on CHART 2.1 is maskedby the facts that population growth was ignored and that decline in the majority ofchurches were nearly offset by growth in the minority of churches. As reported in Briefing #1, we are now approaching a demographic time period whenattendance may start falling precipitously.CHART 2.4 is a concise graphical overview of the Twin Cities church environment atbeginning of 2017.TAKEAWAY 6 - Two-thirds Protestant churches in 5-year declineBetween 2010 and 2015, as shown in CHART 2.2, 2,056 Protestant churches (66%of total) shrunk in size. Even among the 100 largest Protestant churches, 52% were in5-year decline.TAKEAWAY 7 - Three-fourths Catholic churches in 5-year declineBetween 2010 and 2015, as shown in CHART 2.3, 186 Catholic churches (77%) shrunkin size. Even among the 100 largest Catholic churches, 71% were in 5-year decline.TAKEAWAY 8 - Protestant largest 100 gets third of attendanceAs shown on CHARTS 2.6 and 2.7, the 100 largest Protestant churches (attendancegreater than 700) comprise only 3% of total Protestant churches in the Twin Citiesbut generate a third of total Protestant attendance.Another third of attendance comes from 524 medium sized churches (200-700 attendance). The final third of attendance comes from 2,481 small churches (less than 200 attendance).More Briefings for Twin Cities pastors and church boards at www.churchscouts.org/briefingsPage 3

Church Scouts Briefing #2 – Two-thirds of churches in 5-year declineTAKEAWAY 9 - Multisite attendance countsThere are 164 multisite churches in the Twin Cities. In reporting attendance, it is important to make clear whether the number refers to an individual worship site or to a group ofchurches (multisites) under control of a single parent church. In this Briefing, each line in a list refers to an individual site. The underlined number inpurple is the combined attendance for all sites in the group of which this site is a part.Briefing #3 in March 2017 will be a detailed analysis of multisite churches in the TwinCities, showing relationships between parent churches and their subsites, with locations, attendance and trends.TAKEAWAY 10 - More than a shift in Christian patternsThe Great Commission is not a call to attract people to church services, but to makedisciples. Some church leaders dismiss the decline in church attendance by saying thatChristians just attend church less frequently today, as three times a month instead of four. because Christians’ spiritual maturity is now coming more from TV and Internet . orChristians are spending more time in personal spiritual disciplines and small group interaction . or more time witnessing to others. However, that’s not the picture of what’s really happening. See Briefing #1 for statistics showing that the number of Christians in the Twin Cities is in sharp decline, with nochange of trend in sight.Attendance loss is the leading indicator of other kinds of losses that follow: loss ofcommitment, loss of income, loss of participation and loss of community influence.TAKEAWAY 11 - Size not major factor in growth or declineCHART 2.5 shows that percentage growth or decline in attendance does not correlate with size of church. Within each size category, some churches are growing butmost are declining. The 100 largest churches set the trends and get most of the attention, but overall theyare NOT growing more, or declining less, than other churches, especially considering thatmost of the growth has come from just three multi-site groups (Eagle Brook, River Valleyand Hosana). This is encouraging information for medium and small churches who thought theywere at a big disadvantage for church growth relative to large churches. The fact is:one third of Protestants still choose to attend a small church, one third choose to attenda medium-size church, and one third choose a large church.More Briefings for Twin Cities pastors and church boards at www.churchscouts.org/briefingsPage 4

Church Scouts Briefing #2 – Two-thirds of churches in 5-year declinePage 5Protestant/Catholic Attendance ComparisonsIn 2010, there were 2,525 Twin Cities Protestant churches, and they reported total weekly attendance averaging507,000 people; 232 Catholic churches reported attendance averaging 271,000.CHART 2.1Twin Cities Church Attendance (week)In 2015, there were 3,103 Twin Cities Protestant churches, and they reported total weekly attendance averaging503,000 people; 241 Catholic churches reported attendance averaging 258,000.During this 5-year period, reported attendance declinedby 17,000 and population increased by about 200,000.This is equivalent to a 7% decrease.Catholic churches are larger. Attendance at an average Twin Cities Catholic church is 1,075, but 162 at anaverage Protestant church.CAUTION: Nationally, in a typical week, less than 20%of Americans actually attend church, which is less thanclaimed in surveys. See Hartford Study and ChurchLeaders Report. CHART 2.1 here for the Twin Cities calculatesto 22% of the population.Total Twin Cities church attendance reported in this Briefing is the consolidation of all individual church attendancedata reported to CityVision. Churches tend to OVERSTATEaverage attendance, and therefore total attendancereported here may be inflated by as much as 20%.CHART 2.2Protestant ChurchesThere are 3,105 Protestant churches in the Twin Cities, and 2,056 of them (66%) are in 5-year attendance decline.Among 100 largest, 52% are in 5-year decline.CHART 2.2Catholic ChurchesThere are 241 Catholic churches in the Twin Cities, and186 of them (77%) are in 5-year attendance decline.Among 100 largest, 71% are in 5-year decline.More Briefings for Twin Cities pastors and church boards at www.churchscouts.org/briefings
