We also welcome Hanna Schwartzin her new position assite training director atSt. Mary’s.As I reach the end ofmy first mandate asChair, I was asked bythe faculty of medicineto submit a self-studyoutlining the currentstatus of our department, its accomplishments, ongoing issues and futurechallenges. With the help of thedepartmental executive and ourtop notch administrative team, Ihave just put the finishing toucheson a very large document with along list of accomplishments ofwhich we can be proud. Althoughnot recommended as vacationreading, a copy will be available inour office for those who wish totake a look. The document willserve as an important referencefor the upcoming external reviewof our department. The overall forecast for our department is very positive. In thelast five years, we have flourishedagainst all odds, and gatheredstrength to face new challenges.Nonetheless, major issues thatare not within our control mustbe acknowledged.Budgetary constraints representan immediate threat, and a central theme in the discussion ofongoing issues and challenges.Currently, the organizations wedepend on to finance our academic activities, the universityand granting agencies, are facingdrastic cutbacks. Most of you areaware that McGill is being askedto cut 19.1 million in the budget2 0 1 3department will be directly affected. In addition to pay freezes thataffect some members of our faculty, certain administrative positions will not be filled followingdepartures. We are committedto compensating for these lossesto maintain our level of activityand productivity. The situation isno better in the clinical domain, where huge deficits have beenannounced in several McGillteaching hospitals, and the ministry is targeting Montreal for reduction in mental health careresources.Last December, you received anappeal letter to support the Department of Psychiatry AcademicFund.Faculty participation isgrowing, and we have reachedover 4,000 to-date. PAGEMessage from the Chair continued was well-represented at this meeting with the Chair, andseveral Chiefs attending. Our goal is to help the Agencecome up with a plan that will satisfy the ministry whileprotecting academic psychiatry. So far, no clear plan hasemerged which we cautiously interpret as leaving room fordiscussion and negotiation. On a more optimistic note, we were thrilled to learn thatboth our Postgraduate Education Programs received fullaccreditation status from the Royal College of Physiciansand Surgeons of Canada following their visit on March 18& 19, 2013. The surveyors were impressed with the overall quality of our residency program, the dedicated facultymembers, the high caliber of residents, and the positiveatmosphere of collaboration and commitment to educational excellence. The surveyors also praised our ClinicalPharmacology and Toxicology Program. We are proud ofour programs and extend congratulations to Karl Looperand Howard Margolese and their teams for a job welldone.Cocktail dînatoireUndergraduate education is preparing to transition to anew curriculum in September 2013, and some of the proposed changes will have a significant impact on psychiatricclerkship. A major step was thehiring of two liaison nurses, Helene Denoncourt for Nunavik and Maude Paquet for the Cree Territories. Theywill play an essential role in helping us develop a programthat responds to the mental health needs of the Cree andInuit people. Our progress in this area also led to the creation of a RUIS Great North Program that will be dedicated to the promotion of mental health in the regions via thedelivery of culturally-informed care, teaching, and research. We are pleased to announce the nominations of EduardoChachamovich and Charles-Edouard Carrier as co-leadersof the program.Bal des lumièresPhoto courtesy of: lebabillart.com2
