From the DirectorIndian Institute of Technology Patna is an Institution ofNational Importance and a new addition to the hallowedIIT System that has proven its worth in last 50 years. The alumni of IIT are internationally known for theircaliber and contribution. Since its inception in 2008,IIT Patna, like its young as well as established peers, has pursued excellence with steadfast determination.IITP has Six Engineering Disciplines: Civil andEnvironmental Engineering, Chemical and BiochemicalEngineering, Computer Science and Engineering,Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering andMaterial Science and Engineering; Two ScienceDisciplines: Physics and Chemistry; Humanities andSocial Sciences; Mathematics. Its faculty membersare experts in their respective fields. The thriving PhD,M.Tech and B.Tech programs of IITP see the studentsand faculty publish prolifically, win competitions, comeup with innovations and build societal awareness. For impact, technology has to understand its vital linkswith (i) Humanities and Social Sciences, (ii) Mathematicsand (iii) Natural Sciences. Technology can change lifeif it can acquire “Perspective” from Humanities andSocial Sciences, “Technique” from Mathematics and“Foundations” from Sciences. In IITP, we will strive toachieve this 4-way harmony of Technology, Humanitiesand Social Sciences, Basic Sciences and Mathematics. The original charter of new IITs, viz., interdisciplinaryresearch and teaching will thereby be addressed.IITP is strategically placed, geographically speaking. Thestretch from Gujarat to Manipur has 11 IITs (Gandhinagr,Jodhpur, Mandi, Ropar, Roorkee, Delhi, Kanpur, Patna,Kharagpur, Bhubaneshwar and Guwahati) and a largenumber of NITs and renowned universities. This sets upa tremendous powerhouse of knowledge and high qualityhuman resource. Additionally, the state of Bihar is richwith tradition and resources, emphasizes education, isblessed with the fertile Gangetic plain and abundantsunlight. This paves way for immense societal impactthrough agriculture and energy technology, amongstmany other possibilities.IITP has moved to Bihta, a place with history, about35 KM from main city Patna. The sprawling 500acre campus houses 4 academic complexes for thedepartments, a Class Rooms Complex, Faculty, Staffand Student Residential quarters, Hospital and Schooland an impressive Administrative building. The 2015autumn session in IITP started from its permanentcampus. At this juncture of history, IIT Patna is poised for greatthings.5

Our study is unique because IIT Ropar uses the same student pool as IIT Delhi. Both the institutes have a common admission test known as IIT-JEE. The computer science department of IIT Delhi gets students with higher ranks, typically in the range of 1-300. In comparison, the students in IIT Ropar, typically have ranks between 1500-
