APPEAI'IANCitAt the January meeting of the Ingham County Board of Commissionersin 1.902, the businessmen of the city of Hason invited the entire boardto take an expense-paid "junket" to Hillsdale, Hichigan, to examine a"model courthouse" there. Obviously, the men of Mason thought highlyof the courthouse in Hillsdale and hoped Mason, the County Seat, wouldgain an equally worthy structure when Ingham County went ahead with plansfor its own new building. There are marked similarities between the courthouse which nowstands in Mason and the one examined by the Board of Commissioners inHillsdale in 1.902. The roof and arrangement of corner domes on theIngham County Courthouse are not similar to the courthouse in Hillsdale, but t hey do bear a striking resemblance to t he roof of the KalamazooCounty Courthouse which may vrell have been another building inspectedby the Ingham County Commissioners.Needless to say, the Ingham County Courthouse is a of yl 'probably none of which was translated directly from architectural manualsor recognized examples. It is much more likely that a number of styleswhich were current at the turn of the century indirectly affected thedesigner's drawings and the Commissioners tastes. Nevertheless, theIngham County Courthouse is an interesting example of an indigenous chitec ural mood which was obviously influenced by earlierlachigancourthouses throughout the southern part of the state. If there is a dominant style in the Ingham County Courthouse, itis a highly simplified treatment of the style propagated by the Ecoledes Beaux Arts in nineteenth century Paris. Symmetrical plan, frontbroken into advancing and receding planes, accented quoins, and pairedpillars under the front ortico: several features show an indirectawareness of this style. The walls are of cut stone, and the windows haveflat structural openings.A pedimented f height portico projects from the front facade ofthe courthouse. Because the general design of the courthouse is muchsiMpler than a full-blown Beaux Arts design, and because the porticoso strongly dominates the front, the Ingham County Courthouse bears theunmistakeable suggestion or earlier classical designs. The mein dooropening beneath the portico is roun arched with spandrels and cartouche.·The arrangement of the roof, vaulted with domes on the four cornersand a high climactic t Ner in the center, is almost identical to theroof arrangement of the Kalamazoo County Courthouse, built in 1.885.The roof is gently sloped and even resembles a mansard roof from a distance.Circular roof dormers typical of the "General Grant" mode of SecondEmpire styling have been removed from the domes.County offices occupy the first two levels of the courthouse. Circuitcourtroom, Commissioners' room, and small offices occupy the third level. The interior of the building has been wel} . , d, and only minoralterations of floorspace have been maq. e". s,' '/.-t .j' .-IC.-j-i.\-'. In this sense, bringing a trial to the Ingham County Courthouseo!lchange of venue has been almost tantamount to taking the trial backin time to an earlier and more pacific era in Michigan jurisprudence. The city of Hason v1as first platted in :1.836. Four years later, the Legislature fixed Mason as county seat of Ingham County. NearbyLansing was still an unnamed and unbroken forest. The Legislature made its selection on the condition that speculatorCharles Noble of Monroe, Michigan, deed over "at least five acres ofland 'tdthin said village, for the use and benefit of said county." oble, whose own interest in the area was based mainly on the developmentof a lumber mill there, obligingly turned over parcels of land amounting to five acres, "in consideration that the County Commissionershave located the Seat of Justice in said village and in considerationof one dollar."Among those parcels was one which Noble's agent had set off as a"public square" in the center of the village. Now resting on thatsquare, the Ingham County Courthouse is the third generation in thecounty's family of courthouses. The present building was built in 1.904.Over time, the state capital at Lansing has grown into a thrivingurban center, while its little neighbor, Hasan, has remained much whatit always was - a small, quiet, largely agricultural community. Ironically, the quiet which abides beneath the windows of the majestic oldcircuit courtroom in the Ingham County Courthouse has encouraged Michiganmagistrates to send some of the state's noisiest and most notoriouscriminal trials to Hason on change of venue. For several weeks in 1.925, the Ingham County Courthouse was crowdedto capacity with reporters and curiosity-seekers who came to Mason towitness the Arthur Rich rape trial. The case, which involved a prettycoed and a rich manufacturer's son, had been tried earlier in BattleCreek and had resulted in a mistrial. In arguing that their clientcould not hope for a fair second trial in Battle Creek or in many otherparts of Michigan, the attorneys for Arthur Rich pointed to lurid hea lines which had appeared in Battle Creek, Detroit, and other parts of thestate.PREI'TY GIRL IS VICTDI OF AUTO SHEIK. Arthur Rich walked out of the Ingham CountyCourthouse and into ten years imprisonment in the penitentiary at Jackson. As recently as t969, a trial from another part of the state had to beremoved to the cooling atmosphere of Mason. The Algiers 1-!otel murder trial, aftermath of Detroit' s bloody confrontation between black citizens andNational Guardsmen, was moved to Mason in hopes the quiet there would helpassure patrolman Ronald August a calmer trial than he could expect in stillsmoldering Detroit. A reporter described Mason to his Detroit readers asa community which lives "on the egge of yesterday. ""The regal t9th century sandstone courthouse basks in a yellowish glow, and townsmen, as they have for years, sit on benches that are scatteredaround the square."'The judge who heard the Algiers Hotel trial in 1-iason remarked later,"I have never seen a better courthouse or one that was as::well maintained Never in my experience as a judge have I had more decorum in a courtroom."The Ingham County Courthouse is an architectural outgrowth of typicalcourthouse architecture in Michigan: its style embodies features borrowedfrom courthouses in various parts of southern Michigan.More significantly, the Ingham County Courthouse is a sojourner froman earlier era in l1ichigan jurisprudence. The third floor circuit courtroom sternly commands a quiet thoughtfulness and respect from those whoenter it.
