It’s time to get up! Ah, the familiar time of year forstudents returning to school. The voices of schools, parents andguardians are calling to our youngest citizens to begin their vocation ofeducation. And it is their vocation for the time being. Learning, understanding, and even teaching others, is their focus. This month, the Gospel focuses on Jesus as teacher; usually in thesynagogue, but sometimes in a crowd, or even up on a mountain top.He teaches in response to questions, but he also responds to thenegative comments about his disciples and what rules they follow, ordon’t follow. Other times he teaches by his healing actions, showingthe people that God shows no partiality—all are the same in the eyesof God. And he employs different methodologies of learning by askingquestions of his listeners: “who do people say that I am?” I had ateacher like that in high school. He wanted to know our opinions as hetaught—he expected rebuttal. It was kind of intimidating at first, butit was a very effective method of learning (for me) once I gained someconfidence in speaking. There are different ways of learning and teaching, and Jesus seems touse quite a variety. His hearers do the same thing, as they often try totrip him up or push him to prove what he is saying or doing. We dothat today, don’t we? I witness it often in political interviews, debatesand the like. The church, too, continues to be questioned by believersand non-believers alike. We are a people who want proof—want toknow the “correct” answer. The problem is that there is often morethan one answer, or there is no answer. Jesus tells us as followers thathe is the answer and to look to him with our eyes, ears, heart, mindand spirit. As followers of Jesus we are called to continue learningabout God and our faith—it is a lifetime vocation central to our being.May you pattern your life on the Lord Jesus Christ. In your sleeping, in your rising, in your work, in your rest-may you be filled with the Holy Spirit. In thanksgiving for all that we receive from God,Pastor Martha

The EaglePage 6 of 12Youth NewsHAYI Fall Schedule2018 ELCA National Gathering in HoustonA note from Liam HanleyThe experience at Houston was truly remarkable. I wouldpersonally like to thank every member of the congregationfor their support and love during this faith changing event. With lessons on grace and Lutheran theology it reallyopened my eyes as a Christian youth especially a Lutheranyouth. It opened my eyes on how lucky we are as childrenof God. Learning that God will always love me no matterwhat I do, and that even when no one loves me, God will.No matter how bad I screw up, Jesus will always love meunconditionally. Throughout the week we had manyspeakers come in and give their life stories in the largegroup setting, but one speaker’s story really stuck with me.When this speaker told his life issues to a nondenominational pastor, he stated to him four words:“You’re going to Hell.” The speaker then proceeded tocommit self-harm and fell into alcohol and drug addiction.Eventually, he found his way back to the church, specifically the Lutheran Church. When he talked about hislife issues to a Lutheran pastor, he stated four words:“There’s grace for that.” So my mind from that point onhas exploded with Lutheran beliefs and I can only thankthe congregation for that. Every Lutheran youth shouldhave the opportunity to go through a National Gatheringas it truly changes your life and your faith. All I can say isthank you.Sincerely, Liam HanleySeptember 9th 6-8pm Fall Meeting joined byDeacon Marsha RoscoeOur Savior Lutheran Church, 420 NorthProgress Avenue HarrisburgMondays throughout September 6-7pm HelpCaitlin's Smiles assemble craft kitsTrinity, SteeltonSeptember 16th 4-6pm Serve food to thehomeless (partnered with Helping HandsMinistries)St. Michael's Lutheran Church, 118 StateStreet, HarrisburgRSVP to Deacon Dave by September 10th.(dtringali52@gmail.com)September 23rd 6-8pm WorshipLittle Amps Coffee Shop, 1836 Green Street,Harrisburg PAAll youth are welcome, so feel free to bringa friend as we worship to the beautifulmusic of Holden Evening Prayer and sharea potluck meal together!HOW CAN YOU SUPPORT HAYI?We need your support now morethan ever! Be open to God’s nudges. Start each day bypraying, “Speak, Lord. I’m listening.”Perseverance. When life is tough, don’t give up. Press on in faith to achieve your goals. Find accountabilitypartners to walk with you and to help you stay focused.Questioning. Wrestle with God’s Word. Don’t be afraid to ask God questions. Join a small group that can help yougrapple with faith questions for which you have no answers.Sabbath. Make rest a priority. Seek balance. Find ways to refresh—body, mind, and spirit. Schedule “gimme abreak” times in your planner—and keep them!Noticing. Observe the ways God shows up in unexpected people or places. Marvel at the fingerprints of God clearlyevident in nature, in other people, and in the shaping of your life.Hospitality. Befriend the new kid. Welcome the stranger. Include those who are left out. Ask God to help youaccept and appreciate what is strange or unique about you.Loving Yourself. Be OK with not being perfect. Show yourself a little compassion and grace. Discover things youlike—or love—about yourself, and create an “I Like Me” list.Showing Respect. Love and respect go hand in hand. Learn to respect others by getting to know them. Share yourstory, and listen lovingly to the stories of others.Prayer. Pray throughout the day. Talk with God as you do with friends. Don’t just go through the motions; behonest with God. Pray that you might become an answer to your prayers.Stewardship 101: Stewardship of our Work LifeAnd whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God theFather through him. – Colossians 3:17The priesthood of all believers has been characterized as Martin Luther’s most underappreciatedtheological insight. Simply put, Luther observed that God calls all Christians -- not just pastors -- to livesof holiness. Every one of us, not just priests, accomplishes God’s holy work, regardless of what we do forwork, whether employed or working at home. It’s a simple idea, and one that certainly elevates our “job” to a new status, but it can be hard to live out. Here are some tips: Think disciple: You may know to be a disciple in church, but prayerfully imagine how you can be afollower of Jesus at work, too! Think excellence: There’s satisfaction in doing your best. Knowing that your work is holy canprovide not only incentive but also a satisfaction boost. Think relationship: They’re not just your coworkers; they’re also the neighbors whom Christcommands us to serve and to love as ourselves. Think service: Every workplace holds challenges for your employer, coworkers and customers. Howcan your experience and gifts help? Think priest: You are called to be a holy person 24/7. How does this awareness invite you to changeyour behavior and attitude toward your work?We spend so much of our lives in our jobs, we can’t park our faith at the door. Instead, we bring the lightof Christ to the workplace as holy people of God’s reign!—Rob Blezard Copyright 2018, Rev. Robert Blezard. Reprinted by permission.
