The farther the projector is from the work surface, the larger yourimage will be. As you change distance, you will have to slide the lens in orout slowly within the lens barrel to focus the projected image.Mount the projector onto a surface that can be easily moved. Movement of theprojector is required to achieve the desired size. A taboret or rolling cart is ideal.Artograph offers an optional Projector Floor Stand, item #225-350, that can beeasily moved and raised for the ultimate in image positioning.PROJECTOR1PROJECTINGThe Prism both enlarges and reduces with one reversible lens. Theprojection range of this lens is 80% (4/5 x) reduction (20% less thanthe size of your original), up to 20 times enlargement. Please Note:A gap exists in the projection range that cannot be achieved due tothe reversing of the lens –170% to 250%. You will have to adjust thesize of your original to achievea size in this range. To load the projector, simply lift the copy board lid ofthe projector and mount your copy face down onto theglass surface. The metal copy clip may be pushed tothe side if desired as it is only necessary whenmounting the projector onto the accessory Prism TableStand, item #225-206. Close the cover, plug the projectorinto an outlet and turn the projector on by flipping theswitch at the back of the unit. Turn the room lights off. You arenow ready to adjust the size and clarity of the projected image.Always adjust the desired size of the projected image first beforefocusing it. (See Distance Chart forapproximate distance.)The rubber “O” ring (#2) shouldbe rolled down to the end of thelens that is sticking out of theprojector. This ring prevents thelens from entering too far into thelens barrel. (See General Focusing& Enlarging section for reduction andenlargement positions.)25Caution: During operation, ensure the projector isproperly ventilated. Do not block the exhaust or inlet ventslocated on the back and sides of the projector.!ReductionPosition80% - 160%EnlargementPosition225% - 2000%4.Distance Chart (approximate) –PRISM LENSMeasured from label above lens to projection 0x47”89”(1.2m)(2.3m)COPY AREAThe copy area is 7" x 7". This indicates the maximum size of copy the lens cansee. This copy size, however, varies with the desired projection size. Withgreater enlargement, the lens sees less of the copy area.6PHOTOGRAPH PROJECTION(USE CAUTION!)Photographs are commonly used in projectors; however, a few precautionsmust be taken:1.2.3.PRISM LENSAll opaque projectors work like a flashlight; the darker the room, the brighterthe projected image will appear. The clearest and brightest images areproduced in a completely dark room. For best results, operate your Prismin a room where you are able to control the lighting conditions or work in theevening. To achieve the maximum image size of approximately 20X,a minimum distance of 18 ft. (5.5m), measured from the label abovethe lens to the projection surface, is required (see Distance Chart forfurther information).{Work from a copy of any valuable or important photographs. Neveruse an original if it cannot be replaced. Photographs were not intended tohandle the intense light and heat created by a projector. Though thisprojector is fan-cooled and ventilated to keep the copy cooler, it does gethot and photographs may be adversely affected by the heat and light.Never project old photographs as they are particularly sensitive to heatand light and they will be damaged. Again, have a copy made.To prevent photographs from curling, mount them to a stiff backingmaterial or put them in a picture mat. When projecting, make sure that the fan is operating and that thecooling vents have not been obstructed. When finished tracing theprojected photo, turn the projector off and remove photo.(OVER PLEASE)20x14’(4.3m){[Lens in reduction position] [Lens in enlargement position]

TIPS & TECHNIQUESUSE IT TO 2Oversized Copy/BooksStepIf your original is larger than what will fit onto the copyarea, or if you are working from a picture in a book, simply remove the lid from the projector by pulling upthe cover carefully and removing the two pivot pins.Place the copy or book on top of the projector. The lens will still only see a7" x 7" portion of this copy, but placing it on top will allow you to move itaround and project it in sections. Once you have drawn a section, move thecopy and realign the projected image to the stopping point of the tracedarea. Resume tracing and repeat as many times as necessary. The otheralternative to oversized copy is to reduce the original on a copier, so that itfits within the 7" x 7" copy area.Another way to make use of oversized copy that is notmanageable on top of the projector is to placethe copy face-up on your tabletop, remove theprojector lid and place the projector upsidedown and on top of the copy. This way thecopy will remain rigid and yourprojected image is more likelyto line up properly.Size UpThe fast, easy way to enlarge and project photographs, prints, patterns, designsand sketches onto almost any surface.Find the Best CompositionArrange the elements of a painting to decide on the best composition and see howan additional feature would look in the picture before it’s committed to the surface.Define FeaturesEnhance and define features and tonal range in portrait painting when working froma photograph or sketch.Fine Artists of all varieties using many types of mediawill find the Prism invaluable. Photographs, thumbnailsketches, artwork and designs can all be scaled andreproduced in the size needed to accomplish portraits, landscapes, still life and many other fine art formats.Small 3-D objects can be projectedby removing the projector lid andplacing the object on top of theprojector copy area. To ensuremaximum image clarity, place a boxover the top of the object to eliminateambient light (light escaping from the top ofthe projector). To project 3-D objects whichare larger than the 7" x 7" copy area, take aphotograph of the object and project the print.CAUTION: Do not mount aerosol cans orpressurized objects onto the projector. The hotsurface may cause them to burst.Free up your creative skills and gain confidence to work on larger paintingsand murals.Repeat SuccessTransfer an accurate repeat image for cartooning or decorating walls, furniture, fabrics, pottery, cake icing – in fact, just about any surface to be hand-painted.Save TimeDecorative PaintingArtists and crafters who decorate on wood, metalpieces or ceramics will find the Prism ideal forvisualizing placement of their pattern or stencil, whetherit be on wood plaques, furniture, dishes, Shaker boxesor just about any surface to be decorated. To determine a particular scale of a projected image, mount a 6" rulernext to the copy or draw 1" grid lines onto the copyboard itself. If specificenlargements are frequently used from common originals, mark the floorwith tape. Position the tape at desired distances and mark the image sizedirectly on the tape for future reference (i.e. 10x). Then simply align thecart, Projector Floor Stand (see Accessories Section of this manual), ortable with the tape mark to attain that size.Artists that airbrush onto fabric or any other media willfind the Prism useful in gaining an outline and positionfor their image. Project the image, trace the outline andairbrush the color in.4Artists, crafters and designers can use the Prism tocreate inviting or whimsical wall murals and largerpaintings for children’s rooms, hallways, doors, livingrooms, office spaces and more. Project favorite sportsfigures, animals or themes from magazines or booksdirectly onto the wall, trace and color as desired.Illustrators will find the Prism to be indispensable inscaling up their thumbnail sketches, logos and small3-D objects.Minimizing DistortionHome DécorWALLDesigners and crafters can work with repeats, patternsand stencils from wallpaper and fabric to transfer ontowalls, furniture, canvas or ceramic and pottery piecesfor endless decorating possibilities.90 Clean the lens with any lens cleaner and softcloth or lens tissue. Apply cleaner to the cloth –NEVER apply cleaner directly onto the lens, as itmay seep inside.6StepMirror/LampsLoosen plastic screw near the backof the projector next to the top glasswith a coin or screwdriver. Removetop glass and set aside.MIRRORThe Prism has a special front-surface mirror which eliminates double imaging andenhances brightness. Clean its silvered surface with care, using a mild cleansingsolution and a soft cloth or tissue. DO NOT scrub.LAMPSThe Prism uses two each of a 250-watt ECA photo lamp. Imagine shining aflashlight onto a wall. If the flashlight is shiningstraight ahead, the light is a round circle. Ifthe flashlight is turned to an angle, either upor down or back and forth, the circle of light isdistorted. This same concept applies with aprojector. To minimize distortion, always keep theprojector level and the image square to the wall, canvas or other vertical surface.Paint on a Grander ScaleMuralsSmall 3-DObjectsStepTrace around images to improve hand and eye coordination, understand perspective and learn to draw better.APPLICATIONSFine Art3Brush Up Your Drawing SkillsCarvers can quickly transfer their patterns, designs, sketches and even photos directly onto wood pieces. As little or as much detail as desired can betransferred to any wood surface to make carvingsmore precise and accurate.Projector Floor Stand (#225-350)Adjustable sturdy stand designed to assist with positioningof the projected image. The stand incorporates a largeadjustable platform that will allow for quick and easypositioning of your projector onto a wall, easel, or other verticalsurfaces. The platform may be rotated 360 degrees, tilted 15degrees front to back and elevated up from 3 ft.to 41 2 ft. high.Fabric DesignQuilters, silk painters, stencilers and many other typesof designers and crafters who work with fabric can usetheir Prism to project and manipulate the size of theirpatterns and designs. Choose a favorite fabric designand incorporate it into your quilt or fabric.OTHER ARTOGRAPH PRODUCTSXSpray BoothsCommon Uses for ProjectorsArt projection has been used in fine art painting since the Renaissance. The earliest form of the camera obscura pinhole viewing system, used toproject and visualize images, dates back to the 1500s.
