iiSouthern Nevada Regional Planning CoalitionRegional Plant ListIntroductionThe Southern Nevada Regional Planning Coalition (SNRPC) is pleased to present this list of plants thatcan be adapted to our desert environment in the Las Vegas area for use in new developments and inretrofits to existing developments. It was created by members of the SNRPC’s Regional UrbanForestry Working Group in conjunction with local experts including arborists, horticulturists, andurban foresters. Much of the work that went into the creation of this list was built on thefoundations of excellent local resources such as the Nevada Division of Forestry’s 2007 Cleaner Air,Tree by Tree and the 2005 Centennial edition of Trees for Tomorrow, a project of the High DesertResource Conservation & Development Council. Both projects were made possible by grants fromthe Nevada Division of Forestry and the United States Forest Service. The intent of this list is to provide a single, region-wide reference for landscape designers, architectsand developers to select appropriate plants when designing their projects in the Las Vegas area. Inaddition, it is a tool for those who review those projects—such as city planners—to determine ifthose plants meet applicable codes and ordinances. In short—right plant, right place. This list is not intended to be a list of the only plants allowed in the region, nor is it intended to be anexhaustive, comprehensive list of all desert-appropriate plants. In addition, it is not intended torestrict what plants residents choose to plant in their yards. Rather, we hope that this list will helpresidents and developers make informed decisions about which plants to choose. How to Use the ListThe list is divided between trees and other plants, including shrubs, groundcovers, vines, succulentsand perennials. It is sorted alphabetically by botanical name and includes the common names of theplants. There are several columns of attributes that can be used to determine which plants areappropriate to use in specific situations. For example, an out-of-state landscape architect is looking to select a Mojave native shrub that canact as a screen or hedge, but is thornless and is highly drought tolerant. A quick look down theattributes reveal a couple of recommendations in Asclepias subulata “desert milkweed” andForesteria pubescens (neomexicana) “desert olive,” a.k.a. “New Mexico privet.”In another example, a city planner is reviewing a development application that shows an Arbutusunedo “strawberry tree” proposed as a tree in a parking lot diamond. A quick review of the tree listreveals that this small tree is not appropriate as a parking lot tree, and the planner is able torecommend several other species that will serve that purpose.Process for Review and AmendmentThe SNRPC Plant List is intended to be a living document and will therefore be open to periodicreview and amendment. To that end, the SNRPC Planning Directors shall review the list on an annualbasis with input from local plant experts as needed. Any requests to add or delete plants from thelist must be submitted to the SNRPC secretary in writing. The request shall include the followinginformation at a minimum: the applicant’s name and contact information, the botanical andcommon name(s) of the plant(s) to be considered, reasons for the plant(s) to be considered, and anysupporting documentation. For new plants, supporting documentation shall include the plants’attributes as well as information regarding the plants’ history and performance in similar climates.Supporting documentation must be verified by a certified arborist or horticulturist.ii
