Section 1: Camping IntroductionInks Lake State Park is a 1,201-acre recreational park that includes numerous campsites, cabins,and hiking trails. The park welcomes dozens of guests every day, and it is a great place to spenda weekend with friends and family. The park’s busy season is from March to November, but thepark is open 7 days a week year round.The following manual guides novice campers through a 3-day camping trip at Inks Lake StatePark during the spring or summer seasons. The manual will include all materials and instructionsfor a four-person trip, so no camping experience is required. As you read, play close attention tored caution symbols and warnings.Materials and EquipmentYou will be spending 3-days in the confines of Inks Lake State Park, so it is importantthat you bring all necessary equipment with you into the park. The materials andequipment you will need for your trip are divided into specific sections. Hours of OperationInks Lake State Park office hours from March to November:Monday – Thursday: 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.Friday: 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m.Saturday: 8:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.Sunday: 8:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.Section 2: Reserving Your CampsiteInks Lake State Park has over 300 campsites available for overnight guests. However, during thepark’s busy season, these sites can fill up quickly. You must reserve your campsite in advance toensure you have a place to stay in the park.Reserving OnlineFollow the steps below to reserve your campsite online.1. Go to the Inks Lake reservation . Select “Campsite” from the first drop down menu.3. Leave the second and third dropdown menus set to “All.”4. Select “Inks Lake SP” from the last drop down menu.5. Enter in your desired arrival and departure dates.6. Hit “Search.”7. Hit “Select” under the “Reserve” column.8. Type in your information and select “Check Availability.”9. Select an electric and water campsite from your desired region of the park.10. Create a login account for the state park website.11. Confirm your reservation.12. Pay for your campsite using a credit/debit card.Checking into the ParkYou must check in at the front office when you arrive for your trip. Although you havereserved your place in the park, you have not selected a specific campsite. Campsites aregiven out on a first come, first serve basis. The front office opens at 8am, so get thereearly in order to get the best site possible. Follow the steps below to check into the park.1.2.3.4.5.Print out your reservation confirmation.Drive to Inks Lake State Park.Stop at the front office right as your drive into the park.Wait in the line leading to the main desk.Give the person behind the desk your confirmation and any other information heor she needs. You will receive a park map and parking passes for your car(s).6. Select a campsite from the map the front desk personnel shows you.7. Put your parking pass on the dash of your vehicle.8. Follow the map to your campsite.4

Section 3: Setting up the CampsiteAfter you arrive at your campsite, setting up your camping area should be your first step. Thefollowing section will teach you how to set up your tent and build a fire.Setting up the TentYour tent will be your primary shelter while staying at Inks Lake. Look around yourcampsite and select a flat, even surface to build the tent. Collect your tent, tarp, poles,stakes, and hammer and follow the instructions below to construct your tent.1. Lay the tarp down on the site where you will assemble your tent.2. Locate the bottom of the tent.3. Place the bottom of the tent on the tarp.(The tent should lay flat as shown inFigure 9)4. Connect the tent poles and lay themacross the tent.5. Insert the poles into their appropriateflaps on the tent.6. Raise the tent. (You may need the helpof a partner.)7. Insert the stakes through the bottomcorners of the tent and into the ground.Figure 9: Tent flat on tarp68. Use a hammer to pound the stakes deepinto the ground.Building a FireEvery campsite at Inks Lake has a fire pit and a cooking grill. You will need these toolsto make many of your meals while camping. The following instructions will explain howto make a fire using small twigs, firewood, and a lighter or matches. Be sure to bringthese items with you or buy them at the park store.1. Make sure the fire pit is clear and dry.2. Gather tinder to catch the initial spark of the fire. (e.g. small plants, paper, woodshavings)3. Gather kindling (small sticks), to transfer thefire from the tinder to the larger logs.4. Place your larger logs next to the fire pit withyour tinder and kindling. (Note: You mustpurchase large pieces of firewood from the parkstore or bring them from outside the park.)5. Place your kindling in the middle of the fire pit.6. Place your tinder on top of the kindling. 7. Light the tinder with your source of ignition (e.g. lighter, matches, etc.).8. Add firewood as the fire grows, working from the smallest pieces to the largest.Fire Warnings: Keep your fuel source away from the fire. Do not start a fire during a burn ban or drought. Monitor the direction the wind is blowing.Section 4: Cooking InformationAs a new camper, you might feel nervous preparing food without modern conveniences.However, with the right materials, you can easily make delicious and easy meals right outsideyour tent. For a three-day camping trip, you will need to bring enough food for at least sevenmeals. The following sections will teach you types of food to bring on your trip, general cookingtechniques, and how to store your food.Bringing Appropriate FoodWhile camping at Inks Lake, you will not have access to a microwave or stove to cookyour meals. In this situation, you need to pack food that you can prepare using limitedresources. You can buy a variety of food at the park store, but we recommend that youbring as much food as possible in case the store does not have what you need. Thefollowing list consists of recommended food and drink items to bring on your trip. Water bottlesBreadSandwich fixings (e.g. meat, cheese, lettuce, etc.)MilkMeat (e.g. hot dogs, hamburgers, etc.)PotatoesChipsFruitCerealPeanut butter and jellyS’mores ingredients (marshmallows, graham crackers, chocolate bars)EggsCanned foodsCooking on the FireAside from easy to prepare meals such as sandwiches and cereal, you will mainly useyour campfire to cook your meals. Each campsite at Inks Lake comes with a smallcooking grill attached to the fire pit. The grill will allow you to cook meat, bakedpotatoes, stews, and anything else you would normally cook with a stove. Use thefollowing steps to cook meals using your fire pit.1. Place tinfoil, a pot, or a skillet over the cooking grill.6

2. Lay your meat, potatoes, etc. on top of the tinfoil or your cooking device. (Figure11 shows an example of a skillet on a fire grill.)3. Build your fire up to a moderate level.4. Use a stick or rod to push the fireslightly under the cooking grill.5. Let the food cook for 20-30 minutes.(Note: This time might be differentdepending on what you are cooking.Check your food often to avoid overcooking.)6. Remove the food using cookingtongs. (Warning: Avoid getting tooclose to the fire, and refrain frompicking up hot food with your hands.)Figure 11: Meat inside a skillet87. Check to make sure the food isthoroughly cooked.8. Put out your fire when you are done cooking.Storing Your FoodAlthough there are no large animals in the park, you still need to properly store yourfood. Raccoons can get into your food during the night, which creates a mess and canpotentially harm the animals. Follow the instructions below to properly store your food.1.2.3.4.5.6.Place two ice chests and a plastic bin outside your tent.Fill the ice chests with ice.Put all drinks in one ice chest and all other cold items in the other.Fill the plastic bin with your dry foods and eating utensils.Place lids on all containers.Lay large rocks or heavy objects on top of each container before you go to bed.Animals will be unable to get in your food if you follow this measure.Section 5: Camping ActivitiesOnce you have set up your campsite, you can then enjoy the many camping activities available atInks Lake State Park. The following section lists and describes some of the park’s most popularactivities.FishingFishing is a great pastime at Inks Lake, as most cabins and campsites are right on thewater. No fishing license is required at Inks Lake, and all fishing is free within theboundaries of the park. If you plan on fishing, be sure to bring necessary items suchas a fishing pole, tackle box, and bait. The following instructions provide a basiccatch-and-release fishing guide, but you can always ask a park ranger for help.78 https://www.flickr.com/creativecommons/

1. Choose a fishing spot (Locationsinclude two piers, any shoreline,or a boat)2. Gather your materials. (Fishinggear: Fishing rod with line, nailclippers, tackle box, bait)3. Set up your equipment at yourselected fishing spot. (Note: Youmay want to bring chairs,coolers, snacks, and drinks.)4. Pick up your fishing rod.5. Knot the fishing line on a hookfrom your tackle box.6. Place the bait on the hook.7. Push down with your thumb onthe casting button to the front ofFigure 12: Casting help9the fishing rod.8. Pull the rod back behind your shoulder. (Figure 12, steps 1 and 2)9. Cast the end of your pole towards the water while releasing the button. (Figure12, step 3)10. Reel in your line when you get a bite or when you want to recast your line.11. Grab the fish firmly on either side of the body.12. Take the fish gently off the hook before placing it back in the water.Fishing Warnings: Keep space between you and other fishers. Supervise children at all times. Use caution when handling hooks and casting yourline.Hiking in the ParkInks Lake State Park is home to numerous hiking trails for adventurers of all skilllevels. Before heading out from your campsite, pick up a trail map from the park storeor front office and select a trail that is right for you. Then, follow the steps listedbelow.1. Dress in appropriate hiking attire, including jeans, t-shirts, tennis shoes, hikingboots, or athletic wear.2. Cover yourself with a layer of sunscreen and bug repellent.3. Grab a backpack.4. Fill the backpack with water, snacks, a trail map, a first aid kit, and a plantguide ions/pwdpubs/media/pwd bk k0700 0639d.pdf

5. Use your trail map to find the head of your selected trail. If you are havingtrouble, you can always ask a park ranger for help.6. Enjoy your hiking trail while using caution towards plants and wildlife.Visiting Longhorn Cavern State ParkLonghorn Cavern State Park is located just down the road from Inks Lake. Thecaverns are a popular tourist attraction in the area (shown in Figure 13), and theguided tours are great for all ages. The tours are available from 10am to 4pm dailyand last for approximately one and a half hours. The following instructions will teachyou how to tour the caverns.1. Call the Longhorn Cavern visitor center at 1-512-756-4680 to schedule yourtour time. The park offersstandard tours as well asspecialized tours.2. Dress in comfortable clothesand walking shoes.3. Bring a few bottles of water.4. Leave Inks Lake Park 30minutes early to give yourselfplenty of time.5. Turn right as you leave thepark and Longhorn Cavernswill be a few miles down theFigure 13: Inside Longhorn Caverns10road to your left.6. Enjoy your tour of the caverns.For more information, visit the Longhorn Cavern website:http://www.longhorncaverns.com/Swimming at the Devil’s Water HoleInks Lake is a constant level lake, meaning droughts do not affect swimmingactivities within the park. You can swim in most off shore areas, although you shouldcheck with park personnel to ensure your desired swimming spot is a designatedswimming area. The most popular swimming location within the park is the Devil’sWater Hole (shown in Figure 14). The water is extremely deep in this area, andvisitors often jump off the rocks surrounding the hole. The following steps willinstruct you on reaching and jumping into the Devil’s Water Hole.1.2.3.4.5.Put on your swimsuit and comfortable shoes.Cover yourself in sunscreen.Bring towels and bottles of water.Find the Devil’s Water Hole on your park map.Drive your car to the head of the Devil’s Water Hole trail.910http://www.panoramio.com/photo/20303915

6. Walk to the end of the trail andyou will see the water hole infront of you.7. Swim across the hole to the baseof the rocks.8. Follow one of the well-wornpaths to the tops of the rocks.9. Wait until the water below you isclear of people.10. Walk to the edge of the rock.11. Jump into the water as far out aspossible.Figure 14: Devil’s Water Hole11Swimming Warnings: Swim with at least one other person. Swim in designated areas only. Supervise children at all times. Jump off the rocks at the Devil’s Water Hole atyour own risk. No lifeguards will be on duty. Keep hydrated.Enjoying Lake ActivitiesInks Lake covers a large area and has many places to explore. The best method fortraveling around the park is by boat. You can rent paddleboats, canoes, and kayaks atthe park store for up to 24 hours. Go to the park store for more information aboutequipment rentals. If you do decide to rent a boat while staying at Inks Lake, be sureto follow all safety guidelines.Boat Safety: Wear a life jacket at all times. Avoid overloading your boat. Operate at a safe speed. Section 6: Staying Safe in the ParkYou should always put the safety of yourself and others first while staying at Inks Lake. Takesafety precautions whenever possible to avoid an accident during your trip. You can always callthe Inks Lake main office at (512)793-2223 if needed. If someone is injured, follow the stepsbelow for each situation.Treating a CutFollow the steps below to treat a cut.1. Assess the cut.2. Call 911 for severe injuries.3. Collect your first aid kit. The kitshould have most of the suppliesshown in Figure 15.4. Clean the cut with sterilizingwipes.5. Place a bandage over the injuredarea.6. Take the injured individual to adoctor or hospital for professionaltreatment.Figure 15: First aid kit12Treating a BurnFollow the steps below to treat a burn.1.2.3.4.Assess the burn.Call 911 immediately if the burn is severe.Apply cold water to the afflicted area.Take the injured individual to a doctor or hospital for professional treatment.Performing CPRIf an individual is not breathing from drowning or some other cause, you will have toadminister CPR. 9. Place your second hand on top of thefirst hand with the palm facing down.10. Position your body directly over yourhands so that your arms are straightand rigid.11. Perform 30 rapid chest compressionsby pressing down directly over thebreastbone. (Shown in Figure 17)12. Repeat steps 7-11 until the victimresponds or medical help arrives.Figure 17: Chest compressions14Section 7: Preparing for Bad WeatherInks Lake has a mild climate for most of the year, but bad weather can strike at any time. Heat isthe main weather problem in the park, although heavy thunderstorms are also common. Thefollowing section will give you tips concerning dangerous weather patterns, as well as steps tofollow if the weather is severe.Handling Severe HeatDuring the summer, Inks Lake State Park can easily reach temperatures over 100 degreesFahrenheit. Heat at this level can cause serious health issues including dehydration,sunburn, heat stroke, heat exhaustion, and more. To protect yourself against theseconditions, follow the tips listed below. Set up your camp in a shady area.Use sunblock and sunglasses.Drink lots of water throughout the day.Wear light materials to reflect sunlight.Wear a hat to protect your scalp and face.Preparing for a ThunderstormWhile rain is not a daily occurrence at Inks Lake, a heavy thunderstorm will pop upoccasionally. To protect yourself and your belongings, follow the steps listed below toprepare for a rainstorm.1.2.3.4.5.6.7.Bring any food, firewood, or electronic devices into your tent.Cover the remains of your fire with large logs to protect the coals.Keep lighters and matches from getting wet.Wear protective clothing such as a raincoat and boots.Stay in your tent for the extent of the storm.Listen to the radio (if you have one) for important weather updates.Seek shelter in a vehicle or building if the weather becomes s/pwdpubs/media/park maps/pwd mp p4507 015k.pdf

Section 8: Cleaning Up the CampsiteBefore you leave your campsite and head home, you need to clean up your campsite so that it isready for the next campers. The following sections will teach you how to properly clean yourcampsite in order to avoid any fines that might come with leaving your area different from howyou found it.Packing Your BelongingsFollow the steps listed below to pack your belongings.1. Roll up your sleeping bags.2. Remove all clothing, sleeping bags, and other belongings from your tent.3. Look around your campsite for any cookware, towels, or other items you mighthave left outside.4. Collect any trash on the ground or around your campsite.5. Place your trash in any of the dumpsters scattered around the park.6. Put all of your belongings in your vehicle.Dismantling Your TentThe following steps will give you an outline of how to dismantle your tent.1.2.3.4.5.6.7.8.Remove all stakes and flaps from the tent.Place the tent on its side.Slide the tent poles out of their sleeves.Collapse all of the removed tent poles.Fold the tent in half along the long side.Roll the tent as tightly as you can, starting at one of the ends.Place the tent and poles in the tent bag.Put the bag in your vehicle with the rest of your belongings.Putting Out the FireYou must put out your fire before you leave your campsite. Failure to do so will resultin a fine and you could potentially start a grass or forest fire. Follow the steps listedbelow to properly put out your fire.1. Pour water on anyflames or embers thatremain in your fire pit.(Shown in Figure 18)2. Stir the coals to put outany remaining embers.3. Give the fire pit a fewminutes to cool.4. Section 9: Camping Frequently Asked QuestionsQuestionAnswerWhere can I find the park store?The Inks Lake park store is located in themiddle of the park on one of the loops. Thestore can be located on the park map indicatedwith a small present symbol.Can I collect firewood in the park?No, collecting firewood is prohibited withinthe boundaries of the park.
