Through preparation and competition, thestudents gain skills that will aid them in livestock evaluation,their future careers, and life. For those interested in thelivestock judging program, it is important to enroll in bothANSC 215 as a sophomore and ANSC 315 as a junior. Studentsinterested in participating on the team should enroll inANSC 317 Meat Selection, Evaluation, and Grading in thefall semester. ANSC 317 is designed to teach and preparestudents for the upcoming competitions. The Horse Judging Teamis a group of highlymotivated, dedicated,and ambitious studentswho strive to maintain theupstanding reputationof Texas A&M Universitystudents involved in theequine industry. Students who join the Horse Judging Team shouldbe interested in further development of their professionalgoals in the equine industry, as well as critical thinking,public speaking, and other practical, professional skills. The goal of the WoolJudging Team at TexasA&M University is todevelop and enhancestudent communicationskills, critical thoughtand decision making aswell as team interactionthroughjudgingandevaluating wool. The teamalso proudly representsthe Department of AnimalScience at contests acrossthe state and nation.WOOLJUDGING TEAMABOUTThe Wool Judging Team primarily consists of freshmanstudents that have a passion for competitive events. Thisteam is a great introduction to collegiate judging as minimaljudging experience is required to be successful. Interestedstudents enroll in ANSC 314 Wool and Mohair Evaluationin the fall semester and learn the skills associated withwool evaluation. The team competes at one contest in thefall semester and three contests in the spring semester.Contests generally consist of wool classes containing fourfleeces, oral reasons on two classes, and a wool grading railconsisting of 15 fleeces. The Animal WelfareAssessment Contest(AWJAC) aims to providea unique educationalexperience whilestrengthening studentvocabulary andreasoning skills. Thecompetition teachesstudents to assess thewelfare of animals in avariety of settings usingscience-based methodsand reasoning.2018 Animal Welfare Assessment ContestANIMAL WELFAREJUDGING TEAMABOUTThe Department of Animal Science Animal Welfare JudgingTeam at Texas A&M University is unique in that there areboth graduate and undergraduate teams.Participation is open to all intelligent, highly motivated,and talented students. Students interested in participatingon the team attend informational meetings, participatein mock tryouts, and those selected for the team willmeet weekly in the fall semester in preparation for theinternational competition held every year in November.These meetings serve to educate students in species-specificbiology, management practices, and the fundamentalsof animal welfare science and policy. Students are giventhe opportunity to weigh evidence and present soundevaluations.This contest ensures that tomorrow’s leaders in the animalindustries develop strong communication skills and acquireenhanced knowledge of animal welfare. With theemphasis always on learning and improving the student’sriding and training skills, this program has become a popularand important part of the total equine program at TexasA&M University. The Stock Horse Team is dedicated topromoting Texas A&M University and the equine industrythrough collegiate competitions in ranch and stock horseshows throughout the United States. Stock horse showsconsist of trail, ranch pleasure, reining, and working cowhorseevents. This competition allowsstudents to apply theory and learning to a real-world dairywhile working as part of a team. The team spends a morningevaluating a dairy operation and develops a comprehensiveprogram for improvement.
