She shows ushow to use her God-given talentsand resources for the benefit andgood of others. She once said: "If Idepend on my salary as a mayor, itis not enough to help the people whocome to my office and ask for financial help." In other words, Ate Vi trulyacknowledges that her blessings aretruly a gift from ABOVE and that iswhy she shares this with othersespecially among the most unfortunate ones.My dear VILMANIANS, as we continue to follow the latest happeningswith our idol, may we also imitatethe good things she has been doing.Let us reach out to others, VILMANIANS and non-VILMANIANS alike, especially the less fortunate amongO n t h ec o v e rus. Ate Vi’s family life in the 70sNostalgia ang theme natin for this issue. So, I will writeabout Ate Vi noong October 1970. May tatlong bedroom na pawang carpetedand all covered by wallpapers, which was the fad then.Incidentally, the said bedrooms ay pulos air-conditionedding lahat. Adjacent tothe living room is the dining room with a fabulous diningset good for 12 person. Dalawa ang kusina. The dirtykitchen is situated at the back of the house while themain kitchen is connected to the servant’s quarter. She also had a house sa Monterey Hills Subd. sa Marikina. Dito nagtagal si Ate Vi,until she bought the house where she is staying until nowsa Green Meadows sa QC. Sino kayaang nakatira doonngayon? Siguro, itwill take anotherissue for that. Meanwhile, let us enjoyhow it looked like tolive in the ‘70s.

V o l u m e1 ,I s s u e2P a g eF r a n c o5G a b r i e l ’ sLets Be FrancVilma love team. But who wants a story when you canhave your fill of Vilma and Edgar exchanging sweetwords and glances? We were at this house in Quezon City, site of the firstday of shooting, at nine in the morning. The entirecast and crew were there, except for the leading ladyand her leading man. When they arrived an hour anda half later, the place seemed to come alive. Theyoung lovers were chaperoned by Mrs. Santos, prettyand amply proportioned.Edgar Loves VilmaIsaw this book of Lorna Kalaw Tirol titled “Above thecrowd”. It caught my attention when I saw the drawingof Vilma's face which was the most beautiful one compared to other caricatures. This book contained interviews of Kris, Kuh, Nora, Lino Brocka and others. Thepictures was illustrated by Nonoy Marcelo.Let me share you the article about Vi (Vilma Santos) &Bot (Edgar Mortiz)"If Vilma comes, can Edgar be far behind? In the colorful world of the Filipino movie fan, circa1971, the ideological lines (with all due respect to theradicals and the moderators in the movement) aresharply drawn. One is either for Nora Aunor or for VilmaSantos. One cannot like both and be worthy of thename "movie fan". In fact, there are no fans in the caseof Nora and Vilma; they are only fanatics.Nora, her loyal subjects maintain, has a far bettersinging voice than Vilma. That, counters the Santoscamp, is because Vilma is primarily an actress and onlyincidentally a singer. And Vilma of the doll-like face isdefinitely the prettier of the two, her fanatics boast. There, we think, the debate should end.The assignment was to interview Vilma Santos for acover story. We were told that we could catch her oneSaturday morning at an Antipolo resort where she wasshooting Wonderful World of Music for Tagalog IlangIlang. Her director was there, all right, and so wasSnooky (child star), too self conscious and too small forher age. But Vilma was still in Cabanatuan, and so wasEdgar. The following Wednesday she was scheduled to startfilming for another Tagalog Ilang Ilang picture, YoungLovers. With a title like that, we thought, the moviecouldn't be anything but a further buildup of the Edgar-We were relieved to see none of the burly tomboyswho smothered Nora. It was Edgar Mortiz, with hisheight and size, who looked more like Vilma's bodyguard. If he were slim and shorter, he could pass forher shadow. Yet it is difficult to imagine him in therole of bodyguard, he is what older folk would describe as mukhang musmos pa. Edgar Mortiz is, infact, younger than Vilma Santos who, at 17, is nogiggly teenager. She is a woman and she knows it."A LOT of people tell me that I am very mature for myage" she says at the start of the interview. "I feel itmyself. I like to think that I have the mind of 23-yearold woman." She speaks with unusual poise and selfconfidence, a self-assurance which must explain whyshe strikes some people as suplada.Vilma had little time to be a child. When she was nineand a student at St. Mary's Academy in Manila, anuncle who was a cameraman at Sampaguita introduced her to Dr. Jose Perez. Not long afterward, RosaVilma Santos made her first film, Trudis Liit, whereshe played the title role. Shooting schedules werearranged so as not to conflict with her studies: sheattended school in the morning, reported to the set inthe afternoon. More pictures for Sampaguita followed, including two on the life of Ferdinand Marcos,in which she was cast as Imee. When the time camefor Vilma to choose between school and a film career, she readily chose the latter."We study so we can get a job later, di ba? Well, I havea job already." When she does decide to resume herstudies (she was in fourth year high school when shequit), she wants to go into fine arts. Right now however, her thoughts are on her career and, if we are to believeher studio's drumbeaters, Edgar. Is he or isn't he?That is as intriguing a question to their fanatics asImelda Marcos's political ambition is to newspapercolumnists. The love team of Vilma and Edgar hasbeen going strong for two years now. Whether on TV'sSensations and Edgar Loves Vilma or on radio's "Hotline 1250 with Edgar and Vilma" or in advertisinggimmicks, the latest of which is birthday party withVilma and Edgar, the team-up has proved to be a hit. They are, in addition, neighbors somewhere in QuezonCity. Doesn't she get tired of being paired with him? "Ofcourse not," she says petulantly. Whether their apparent fondness for each other is the real thing or justplain acting is hard to tell. When not holding hands, which is most of the time, they have their arms aroundeach other. "I'm not really a singer," Vilma admits, "butEdgar is teaching me how to sing."Love team come and go, but that is the least ofVilma's worries. Show business is her world. She wantsto stay in it for as long as she can. "Sana magtagalako", she says. Even without Edgar?Asia-Philippines LeaderJuly 9, 1971Today, Vilma Santos is still the most bankable star ofPhilippine cinema. Her movies continued to be boxoffice hits. She is the most awarded actress in thecountry and a respected public servant.Edgar on the other hand is now a TV director. He nowa happy family man. He’s now part of the Teleserye"Kampanerang Kuba" which happened to be the remake of a Vi & Bot hit during the 70's. Recently, Vilmawas one of the sponsors of Edgar's daughter's wedding. The former love team are now Kumpares & Kumares. — fg

I told him: “Tama na,panahon na .hindi habang panahon pipigilan n’yoako sa pagsasalita ” the line from SSL.The Beginning — When I was a little kid, I remem-Why does he have to rape Rubia? — Anotherber watching my very first Vilma movie with my aunt.It was “Lipad Darna Lipad”. The theatre was Cinerama on Claro M Recto near the underpass headin’towards Quiapo. I remember the crowded theatre. The carpeted floor and velvet curtains. With nomore seats and an SRO crowd, we sat on the stairsnear the balcony area. People were screaming andinto each fight scenes. I remember vividly how myaunt almost got into a fight because she wanted meto sit on one of the seat that was vacated and a manstanding in front of us wanted the seat too. CeliaRodriguez was really scary with her head coveredwith snakes and her voice was so icy cold. LizaLorena didn't registered much on me but GloriaRomero was even scarier! This film brought mesome nightmares but it also gave me and my cousins something to play about every afternoon afterschool.memorable experience was when my aunt got intoa huge fight in front of Galaxy Theatre onAvenida. Being a true Vilmanians and with herdeadly weapon, her umbrella, my aunt pulled thehair of this two crazy Nora Aunor fans. This wasafter the two said nasty things about Vilma whilepassing on in front of the theatre. I ended up onthe cement floor hiding near the newspaperstands. Thank god she always came up on topbecause we were always able to go home uninjured. Rubia Servios was showing at the Galaxytheatre back then. Again we have to sat down onfloor, my aunt’s realized that she can’t put me onher lap anymore as I am a bit heavier now. As Iobserve, people are more serious this time. Noshouting but silence as the story being told to us.The crowd was so into it too but no shouting instead a feeling of sighs and sadness. My auntcried as she watched Rubia crawled on the sandyside of the beach. Rubia Servious was for adultsonly but my aunt's sister was the ticket collector or "takilyera". So I was able to get in. PhilipSalvador was so “hot” in his black swimmingtrunk, I dreamt of him a number of times. As wewatched the film, I remember asking my auntabout why does he (Philip) have to rape Darna? My aunt patiently explained, about love andlust. My innocent mind were corrupted that day.Eventually, I got over that rape scenes but revengewhen Vilma killed Phillip using a boat paddle stillstucked on my mind.Pakawalan — The second memorable film experience for me was during early 80s where I saw thefree sneak preview of “Pakawalan Mo Ako” atGotesco Theatre near University of the East. I wasone of the lucky ones who managed
