Secondly, I want to assure you that we at The Historic Trust, whileworking remotely, are monitoring developments with COVID-19 andupdating our plans accordingly.With schools closed and more than 7,000 youth and families lookingto Pearson Field Education Center as a resource to deliver communityeducation programs, staff are devoted to creating and implementingnew, live streamed, inclusive educational programs.In addition to creating new creative content online, we are exploring future opportunities fornew innovative and exciting events and programs that will take place throughout Trust propertylocations once this challenging time is behind us.We realize this is a stressful time for everyone. Exercise is considered a safe method to relievestress and it is encouraged when we adhere to six-foot distance guidelines. I invite you to takea peaceful walk through the Vancouver National Historic Reserve. Spring is in the air and eachtime you walk along Officers Row we hope you experience a sense of civic pride in knowingyour generosity is making it possible.The board of directors, staff, volunteers and I join together to wish you peace and health duringthis unprecedented time. Was it a class, a chance meeting, or an event? For some kidsin our community, it was a visit to Pearson Field Education Center (PFEC). Below is a letter from Linda,a single parent of a freshman in high school.“We visited your Open Saturday event and my son’s eyes were opened tothe world of aviation. This is something I had no idea he was interestedin, but he has been talking about it for months now. Just visiting madesuch an impact on him. My hope is that learning more about aviation willhelp encourage him and provide a healthy outlet. As a single parent andteacher, I am often unable to provide these types of opportunities formy kids. Thank you for considering Cody for a scholarship.” — LindaPFEC offers three different STEM summer camp experiences each year:OFOUNDATIONS OF FLIGHT – Grades 2-4OFLIGHT IS FUN –Grades 5-7OYOUR FUTURE IN FLIGHT –Grades 8-10In an effort to extend our reach and include youthwho are not able to afford going to camp, we haveestablished full and partial scholarships for those inneed. honorThe Historic Trust honorsGEORGE C. MARSHALLLEADERSHIP AWARD RECIPIENTSThe Historic Trust announces this year’s General George C. Marshall Leadership Awards recipients,Chase Smith (Adult Award recipient) and Grace Melbuer (Youth Award recipient). The Marshall LeadershipAward recognizes a person’s leadership potential, commitment to public service, and strength of ALLAWARDYOUTHRECIPIENTCHASE SMITHGRACE MELBUERThe 2020 Marshall Award adult recipient is ChaseSmith, a Computer Science Teacher at HeritageHigh School. Over the past few years, Chase hasorganized new clubs, joined FBLA (Future BusinessLeaders of America) as a co-advisor, supported thefootball team as a coach, videographer and databasecreator and volunteered with Girls in STEM andGirl Scouts. Overall, Chase has spent over 1,200hours volunteering his time for students in aneffort to make STEM education fun, engagingand accessible to everyone. Chase believes, “ thatfemales are underrepresented in the computer scienceindustry. I am working with young females to helpthem understand that computer science is not a“boy’s thing,” it’s a world thing. Helping them tounderstand their potential and how much the worldneeds their views, critical thinking skills, and problemsolving capabilities so our civilization can continue tosucceed.”The 2020 Marshall Award youth recipient is GraceMelbuer, a senior at Ridgefield High School andfounder of the HOSA (Health Occupations Studentsof America) Club her freshman year. She has servedas President all four years and currently serves on theWA HOSA state officer team. As president, Graceconducts weekly meetings, organizes blood drives(collecting over 200 pints for the SW Washingtonarea) and facilitates local job shadows and volunteerprojects. As the HOSA Region 3 VP, her stateposition enables her to serve as a resource for otherHOSA chapters and push for CTSO (Career andTechnical Student Organizations) funding on thelegislative scale. Outside of HOSA, Grace is leadcommittee chair of National Honor Society andserves as lead buddy for TOP soccer, an organizationthat facilitates soccer and social development indisabled youth. Grace plans to pursue a career inmedicine because it provides her the opportunity tocombine her passions for service and science.8SPRING 2020

After several years of successfuloccasional presentations, the Chautauqua AnnualSeries has commenced. There are four events in 2020,peppered through the year. The Winter Chautauquajust concluded on February 22 and 23 to capacitycrowds. Next up is a Spring Chautauqua weekend inMay, the six-day Vancouver Chautauqua in August,and an October Chautauqua weekend.The Winter Chautauqua at the Artillery Barracks was acooperative partnership between several organizations,including the Oregon Historical Society, NAACPVancouver Branch, and the Buffalo Soldiers, MosesWilliams Chapter. Entitled “Black Roots in the LowerColumbia River Basin”, the exhibit displays and theexpert panel on Saturday afternoon, February 22, soughtto dispel myths about black history in SouthwesternWashington and the greater Portland metro area.Particularly revealing was the Black History Timelinefrom the NAACP which illustrated an amazing breadthof personality, experience and situations for black peoplesince 1799. Attendees commented that the informationwas so rich, yet so unknown to the general public. Aspanelist Melissa Williams of Clark College stated,“People’s general impression from other places in thecountry is that there was no black community no ideathere was history here.”Other panelists were Dr. Donna Sinclair(moderator), James Harrison, Dr. Carl Abbott,Claudia Carter and Frazier Raymond. They eachprovided distinctive stories about the lives and timesof African Americans in our community.
