Alkaline batteries can rupture at hightemperatures.NOTICEAlkaline batteries lose a significant amount of their capacity asthe temperature decreases. Use lithium batteries whenoperating the device in below freezing conditions.Maximizing Battery LifeYou can do several things to extend the life of the batteries. Reduce the backlight brightness (Adjusting the BacklightBrightness, page 10). Reduce the backlight timeout (Display Settings, page 9). Use battery save mode (Turning On Battery Save Mode,page 1). Decrease the map drawing speed (Map Settings, page 3). Turn off GLONASS or GALILEO (GPS and Other SatelliteSystems, page 9).GPS/GNSS antennaKeysPower keyTurning On Battery Save ModeMini-USB port (under weather cap)Mounting spineYou can use battery save mode to prolong the battery life.Select Setup Display Battery Save On.In battery save mode, the screen shuts off when the backlighttimes out. Stored data is not lost when batteries areremoved.Installing a NiMH Battery PackThe device operates using a NiMH battery pack (optional) or twoAA batteries (Installing AA Batteries, page 2).1 Turn the D-ring counter-clockwise, and pull up to remove thecover.2 Locate the battery pack .GPS/GNSS antenna3 Insert the battery pack, observing polarity.4 Gently press the battery pack into place.5 Replace the battery cover, and turn the D-ring clockwise.KeysPower key1 TheMCX connector is not included on all product models.Introduction1

Charging the Battery PackNOTICETo prevent corrosion, thoroughly dry the USB port, the weathercap, and the surrounding area before charging or connecting toa computer.Do not attempt to use the device to charge a battery that wasnot provided by Garmin . Attempting to charge a battery thatwas not provided by Garmin can damage the device and voidthe warranty.Turning On the DeviceHold.Keys Before you can connect the straight connector of the USB cableto your device, you may need to remove optional mountaccessories.NOTE: The device does not charge when outside the approvedtemperature range (Specifications, page 13).You can charge the battery using a standard wall outlet or aUSB port on your computer.1 Pull up the weather cap from the mini-USB port .FINDSelect to open the search menu.MARKSelect to save your current location as a waypoint.QUITSelect to cancel or return to the previous menu or page.Select to scroll through the main pages.ENTERSelect to select options and acknowledge messages.MENUSelect to open the options menu for the page that iscurrently open.Select twice to open the main menu (from any page).PAGESelect to scroll through the main pages.Select , ,map cursor.2 Plug the small end of the USB cable into the mini-USB port.3 Plug the USB end of the cable into an AC adapter or acomputer USB port.4 If necessary, plug the AC adapter into a standard wall outlet.When you connect the device to a power source, the deviceturns on.5 Charge the battery completely.Installing AA BatteriesInstead of the optional NiMH battery pack (Installing a NiMHBattery Pack, page 1), you can use two alkaline, NiMH, orlithium batteries. This is useful when you are on the trail andcannot charge the NiMH battery pack. Use NiMH or lithiumbatteries for best results.NOTE: Standard alkaline batteries are not recommended for the64sc/csx models when using the camera feature.1 Turn the D-ring counter-clockwise, and pull up to remove thecover.2 Insert two AA batteries, observing polarity., orto select menu options and move theINSelect to zoom in on the map.OUTSelect to zoom out on the map.Acquiring Satellite SignalsIt may take 30 to 60 seconds to acquire satellite signals.1 Go outdoors to an open area.2 If necessary, turn on the device.3 Wait while the device searches for satellites.flashes while the device determines your location.shows the satellite signal strength.Using the Main PagesThe information needed to operate this device is found on themain menu, map, compass, trip computer, and elevation plotpages.Select PAGE to choose the active main page.Opening the Main MenuThe main menu gives you access to tools and setup screens forwaypoints, activities, routes, and more (Additional Main MenuTools, page 8).From any page, select MENU twice.Map3456Replace the battery cover, and turn the D-ring clockwise.Hold .Select Setup System AA Battery Type.Select Alkaline, Lithium, Traditional NiMH, or PrechargedNiMH.represents your location on the map.
