Hilton Center NewsNATIONAL HEALTHCARE DECISIONS DAY – APRIL 16thNational Healthcare Decisions Day aim is to educate people! Each year, on April 16, manyindividuals and organizations take the opportunity to encourage all adults to discuss and plan forcare before a serious illness. This observance emphasizes the importance of advance directives.During the pandemic, we’ve seen a ten-fold increase in individuals wanting to discuss anddocument their wishes. If a person has a health emergency, decisions on their medical care areusually thrust on their family members. Plan ahead for your important healthcare decisions. Findthe documents you need now, complete them, and put them where they are easily accessible.Discuss your decisions with your loved ones. Let them know where your documents are in theevent you have a healthcare event. Encourage other family members to complete an advancedirective, too. Don’t place the burden of these decisions on your loved ones. National HealthcareDecision Day encourages everyone to think about their healthcare needs and possible healthoutcomes and come up with a plan their family can follow if they ever become seriously ill ordisabled. Advance care planning includes completing an advance directive (also known as a livingwill) and appointing a healthcare power of attorney (someone to make healthcare decisions for youif you are unable to speak for yourself). Then, most importantly, sharing your decisions with yourfamily and loved ones.5 things to ask yourself on national healthcare decisions day:1. Have I legally chosen someone to be my surrogate medical decision maker?2. Have I thought about my wishes and preferences for my medical care, if I were too sick ortoo mentally disabled to make decisions for myself?3. Have I discussed my advance care planning with my healthcare providers?4. Have I documented my wishes in a legally-suitable format?5. When did I last review my advance directive? Have I reviewed it regularly, or after asignificant change in health status?Join us for a Zoom Educational EventHealth Care Proxy, MOLST and Personal Directive document tool kits are availablefor pickup at the Salisbury Senior Center call us for more information 978.462.2412.
