As most of you know, my mother was sick for several years. The disease which she had compromised her immune system such that she hadto quit her job and, apart from trips to the infusion center for blood, le her basically homebound. That was the hardest part of the diseasefor her. When I came home for my niece’s First Holy Communion she “stole” my car and snuck up to St. Theresa to prove she could s ll get aroundwell enough to go to the Mass. And Father Neal was very generous and helped accommodate us so that we could create a safe place for herto be at the Mass. But disease is real, and I know firsthand the fear that comes from the possibility of infec on. Which is why, in mes likethis, it makes sense to take reasonable precau ons, without causing further panic or by our ac ons saying anything untrue. There are things we do at Church that absolutely carry with them the threat of infec on. If Holy Water stoups aren’t changed regularly thenthey can carry bacteria. Shaking hands with people at Mass is as dangerous as shaking hands with them anywhere else. And, of course, drinking from a common cup at Communion is no different than sharing a water bo le with a buddy at ball prac ce, or a cup of tea withyour spouse while cuddled on the couch—except that several dozen other people are drinking out of the same vessel. And the most exposed person in this scenario? The priest or the deacon who must cleanse the vessel, thereby drinking a er virtually everyone at Mass. This is, at least in part, how Communion from the chalice stopped in the first place. Now I know, I know, “But Father, it’s the blood of Christ, He’ll keep us safe from any disease.” It is absolutely the Blood of Christ, but theaccidents of wine remain, which means the proper es which carry diseases are as present as they would be in an ordinary cup of wine. Thisshouldn’t surprise us. Jesus’ Body was an ordinary human body like ours, which carried bacteria on the skin, and sloughed off dandruff andother dryness, and yes, carried “germs” in His spi le and His sweat and His snot and His blood. If Jesus had the flu you could catch it fromHim as easily as from me; we should expect no more from the Blessed Sacrament, in which He truly dwells. And so we are going to be taking what I believe to be the following reasonable and sensible precau ons at Mass for the foreseeable future:x Communion will be offered only under the species of bread (the host) un l Easter; we will revisit at that pointx The Deacon will not invite us to exchange the peace with each other; that will be celebrated between the priest and the assembly alonex Ushers/Host ministers are instructed not to shake hands with people as they approach for Holy Communionx Holy Water Stoups will be refilled daily; new Holy Water with more salt added will be confected to help avoid contagionIn the mean me, do pray for everyone affected by the present outbreak; the ill, the dead, and their families.

About100 of the 250 bottles distributed werereturned -- if you have any additional bottles, pleasedeliver them directly to InnerVisions HealthCare inWest Des Moines or South Des Moines. God bless you!It is hard to believe that it hasbeen 16 years since the releaseof The Passion of the Christ. In2004 many people thought themovie would fail miserably. Whowould want to see a movie aboutJesus Christ—especially onerated R for graphic depictions oftorture, and one spoken in Aramaic? Despite its naysayers ThePassion has grossed 622 million dollars on a 30 millionbudget and it has been a major force in filmmaking. But commercial success is not the reason we are recommending ThePassion this Lent.Arguably, Christianity cannot be fully understood apart fromthe reality of Christ’s passion and death. Modern depictionsof Jesus’ sacrifice tend to sanitize his mental, emotional, andphysical agony. Crucifixes frequently display a body with fewwounds and minimal blood. Christ’s actual passion can onlybe described as brutal, and The Passion of the Christ confronts this in a visceral fashion. As a result, this is not a filmfor casual viewing. It is not easy to watch, and it is not appropriate for younger viewers. But it does offer adults and matureteens a unique opportunity to grow in understanding of andgratitude for Jesus’ sacrifice.Watching The Passion of the Christ can be a deeply personal experience. Jim Caviezel’s portrayal of Jesus is extraordinary. Gone is the baby-faced Jesus who sports a slightBritish accent. In his place is the raw humanity of Jesus whofreely gave himself up to death for our sake. Nothing couldbe more moving. The movie is not a map of the Gospel story; it is a synthesisof scripture, tradition and theology with a little dramatic license thrown in. Often it is gut-wrenching, but at times it isalso poetic and even humorous. You see The Passionthrough the eyes of Jesus’ loving mother, and you are therefor the last 12 hours of his life. The Passion of the Christoffers food for thought, meditation, and prayer.Parish Library HoursSaturday: 4:30 PM — 6:30 PM (closed during Mass)Sunday 8:30 AM — 12:30 PM, 2:00 PM, — 3:00 PMService Hours AvailableAny students wishing to earn some additional service hoursplease consider helping the Altar and Rosary Committeemake Wandas on March 28th.
