Estas palabras son tansagradas para los judíos, que se rezan en los momentos más importantes de peligro o santidad suprema. Los judíos no toman estaspalabras a la ligera porque expresan la esencia de su religión y su relación con Dios. Como católicos, estamos totalmente de acuerdocon nuestros hermanos y hermanas judíos en este asunto. El mismo Jesús respondió a la pregunta de cuál fue el primer y más grandemandamiento: fue el Shemá Israel, por que es tan importante? Jews don’t take these words lightlybecause they express the essence of their religion andrelationship to God.As Catholics, we fully agree with our Jewishbrothers and sisters on this matter. Jesus himselfanswered the question of what was the first, greatestcommandment—it was the Shema Israel. Why is it soimportant? Because it declares the unity of God:“The Lord is our God, the Lord alone!”(Deuteronomy 6:4). He is one supreme God,not a multitude of divinities as in the Greekand Roman polytheistic religions, or eventoday in Hinduism and Buddhism.This belief in one God makes themonotheistic religions of Judaism andChristianity unique. Second, this supremeGod deserves our love and obedience. “Youshall love the Lord your God. ” Our roleas creatures called and saved by him is tooffer loving obedience.The Second Commandment flows from thefirst: If we love God above all, then we need tolove our brothers, sisters, and ourselves.What better icon is there of this love for God andneighbor than the love of a mother for her child, asshown in this wax sculpture? As the piece shows,our love should be reverent, tender, compassionate,and unique.
