HESA Handbook Updated AUGUST 2019p.5WMU HESA STUDENT HANDBOOKIntroductionThis handbook is intended to serve as an overview for the HESA Leadership Mastersconcentration in the Department of Educational Leadership, Research, and Technologyin the College of Education and Human Development at Western Michigan University.The goals of this reference guide are to provide students with information aboutcurricula, degree requirements, and policies while offering a suggested course of studyfor timely progress towards degree completion. The HESA program voluntarily ascribesto the guidelines set forth by the Council for Advancement of Standards in HigherEducation. Thus, many of the sections in this Handbook outline how we as a HESAprogram meet those standards. Students are encouraged to attend advising sessions,read email announcements and meet with their Faculty Advisor to stay abreast ofrelevant changes in policies. This handbook is intended to serve as a guide; specificquestions or concerns should always be brought to the Faculty Advisor.Western Michigan University is a Carnegie Doctoral I public university, the fourth largestin Michigan. (updated May 2017)HESA HistoryThe Higher Education and Student Affairs (HESA) Leadership program is one of theoldest student affairs preparation programs in the United States. The Department ofEducational Leadership was originally formed in 1969. A new Department ofEducational Leadership, Research, and Technology (ELRT) was established in August2007, combining two program units with Educational Leadership; EducationalTechnology and Evaluation, Measurement and Research. In Fall 2010 a new Certificatein Student Affairs in Higher Education started and provides theoretical andadministrative knowledge of higher education and student affairs.HESA Statement on Equity & AccessAs an academic program dedicated to the importance of inclusion and access inprofessional practice, HESA demonstrates the values espoused in the universityprinciples of equity and access. To further this appreciation and understanding, thedepartment provides educational opportunities to demonstrate, reflect, and identifythose issues that our student population and the students we may work with in thefuture experience. The HESA faculty are scholar-practitioners with experience in a wide array ofstudent affairs and higher education backgrounds and also engage in regular research.Program Faculty CoordinatorHESA employs a full-time program coordinator. The position, in accordance with CASstandards will assist you as you go through the program. For most students, the facultycoordinator serves as your advisor, will teach several of the core classes in yourprogram, and manages the program including admissions, curriculum decisions, andadherence to CAS standards. Dr. Lewis will be your point of contact for programquestions and concerns, field experience connections, and as a universityrepresentative for several conferences. Dr. Lewis makes herself available to studentsthrough dedicated office hours, and scheduled events. You will receive informationabout these opportunities over email.Part-Time FacultyIn accordance with CAS Standards, HESA believes in the use of highly qualified parttime faculty. HESA Handbook Updated AUGUST 2019p.9HESA ADMISSIONSIn accordance with the Western Michigan University and Graduate College Policies allapplicants are expected to meet the same academic standards required for admissionconsideration. The minimum academic requirements vary, however, by degree level, bydiscipline, and by admission type.1. Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution, indicated on an officialtranscript.2. One official transcript from each institution attended since high school.3. An overall grade point average of at least 3.0 in the last two years ofundergraduate work. Students who do not meet the minimum GPA requirementsmay be considered but if admitted will be admitted on a conditional status withthe expectation of receiving and maintaining a 3.0 GPA after the first semesterand maintaining that GPA.4. Evidence of having met any additional admission requirements stipulated bythe individual degree program.5. Acceptance by the academic unit offering the master's program andendorsement of the acceptance by the graduate dean.The HESA Leadership concentration does not require exams (i.e. GRE) for admissioninto the master’s program. Students from any academic major are encouraged to apply.The minimum GPA requirement HESA admission is generally a 3.0. Generally, we arelooking for a record of improved and/or steady academic performance and we need tofeel confident in your ability to not only manage challenging coursework but also thedemands of a graduate assistantship and field experiences. Students who do not meetthese requirements are encouraged to speak to the HESA Coordinator about theirconcerns. Students who fall below this requirement are asked to provide in writing, asan attachment to their Career and Professional Goals statement, a statement regardingtheir academic performance and anything they may have done to more recently addressthe previous academic issues (taken courses, etc.) and how they see themselvesmeeting the academic challenges of graduate school.Application ns are accepted on an on-going basis throughout the year; however due tolimited size of the HESA program and to and to be eligible for HESA LeadershipInterview Days students should complete and submit all of the application no later thanDecember 15 each year. Applications for International Applicants may be due sooner tothe Office of International Admissions. Final admissions decisions will be made in midJanuary. Students are not required, but arehighly encouraged to attend. Being admitted academically does not guarantee obtaininga graduate assistantship (GA) but many of our students find a GA position at InterviewDays.In accordance with Council for Graduate Schools all students are asked to submit theirnotice of acceptance in the Applicants Response to Admission form to the HESALeadership program by April 15 each year.HESA EXPECTATIONSStudents in HESA are expected to adhere to university, college, and departmentalpolicy and procedures. Students should also recognize that they are part of a largerprofession of student affairs. Ethical codes and ethical standards as they relate toprofessional associations and standards are of great importance. As a HESA programwe closely monitor the overarching professional codes set forth in ACPA EthicalStandards and Guidelines, , NASPA, and the CAS Statement of Shared EthicalPrinciples. These policiesinclude cheating, fabrication, falsification and forgery, multiple submission, plagiarism,complicity and computer misuse. Studentswho fall below this GPA requirement will be placed on academic probation by theGraduate College. If students are unable to increase their GPA above the 3.0 standardthey may face academic dismissal and need approval by the Department Chair and theGraduate College.Grading - A grade is given in each course in which a student registers. Grades areindicated by letters and assigned honor points as shown in the table below. Student Affairs in Higher Education (SAHE)(574) The Student Affairs in Higher Education (SAHE) is a 36-semester-hour degree program offered online. The program is housed within the College of Edu-cation and Human Development at Northwestern State University. SAHE offers graduate coursework leading to the Master of Arts degree. The Council on Higher Education (CHE) is an independent body established by the Higher Education Act, No. 101 of 1997. The CHE is the Quality Council for Higher Education. It advises the Minister of Higher Education and Training on all higher education issues and is responsible for quality assurance and promotion through the Higher Education .

The Exploring Student Affairs in the Higher Education Profession open online course is in its fourth year as a collaboration with NASPA. We average more than 1,200 students each . Affairs and the CSU Graduate School. The Student Affairs Division contributes more than 1.2 million dollars through 40 graduate assistantships available for SAHE .

Many offices within student affairs and related areas have traditionally offered practica for students in the Higher Education and Student Affairs program. Other offices may be amenable to sponsoring a practicum if presented with a workable proposal. The HESA program is quite flexible regarding selection of practicum sites.
