I have been Program Director of Orthopaedic Surgery KCU/ Research Medical Center for 11 yearsand in practice for 25 years. I am actively involved in all areas of Orthopaedic Surgery includingbeing the founding Chair of Program Directors for the American Osteopathic Academy ofOrthopaedic Surgery (AOAO), Vice Chair of the Virtual Library rogram Director Section, andboard member of the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery. I was activein the American College of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Orthopaedic Milestone 2.0Committee that just completed our work May 2021.Our program educates residents in the clinical, surgical, and research components of OrthopaedicSurgery. We consider our program to be community based with academic affiliation.We have diverse faculty who are eager to have you participate in our rural and urbanpatient care including hospital and surgical center exposure. JusticeD.O.Dr. Justice returned to join OSI in 2013 after finishing a year-longfellowship in orthopaedic sports medicine at the prestigious AmericanSports Medicine Institute in Birmingham, Ala., under the direction ofrenowned orthopaedic surgeon Lawrence Lemak, M.D. Dr. Justice isboard certified by the American Osteopathic Board of OrthopaedicSurgery, and is an assistant professor of surgery with the Kansas CityUniversity of Medicine and Biosciences.About HCA HealthcareDavid DuganD.O.Dr. Dugan joined OSI after graduating from the orthopaedic surgeryresidency program through St. Mary’s Medical Center/Kansas CityUniversity of Medicine and Biosciences, and working with the surgeonsat OSI. Angela WalkerD.O., Associate Program DirectorDr. Walker is the only female fellowship-trained foot and anklespecialist in the Northland, and one of only a handful in the entirecity. Dr. Walker performed her residency in orthopaedic surgery withOSI at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Blue Springs, Mo. She completedher doctor of osteopathic medicine degree at the Kansas CityUniversity of Medicine and Biosciences. About the ProgramHCA Research Medical Center Orthopaedic Residency is a comprehensive, five-year,ACGME (Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education) approved trainingprogram.The HCA Research Medical Center Orthopaedic Surgery Residency mission is tofoster a commitment to excellence and life-long learning in healthcare for the patientand community.We are committed to mentoring orthopaedic surgery residents into physicianscompetent in general orthopaedic surgery and the ability to pursue an additionaldesired fellowship. We are committed to developing orthopaedic surgery residentscapable of leadership positions, mentoring, fostering a learning environment ofcamaraderie, and evidence based patient care for the community. We are committedto training orthopaedic residents to be eligible for specialty board certification and tobecome clinical adept orthopaedic surgeons.We provide an academically and clinically rigorous training program in orthopaedicsurgery. Each resident is supervised by faculty and instructed in pre- and postoperative assessment as well as the operative and non-operative care of general andsubspecialty orthopaedic patients at all times. The supervising faculty may delegateportions of care to residents and progressive responsibility based on the needs ofthe patient and the skills of the residents. We are also committed to nurturing arobust interest in scientific investigation and research; implementing evidence basedmedicine into everyday practice and patient care.

HighlightsThe five-year Orthopaedic Surgery Residency includes, didactic and research training,along with extensive clinical experience. You gradually assume increasing responsibilityfor patient care.All residents are enrolled in a three year progressive Core Curriculum through KansasCity University Graduate Medical Education. The curriculum includes online AMAcore competency modules, the IHI Basic Certificate in Patient Safety and QualityImprovement, QI projects, and a research course.Continuity clinic is scheduled two ½ days a week for every month during trainingthroughout residency.Curriculum & RotationsThe PGY 1 residents complete a one-month rotation during their first month of training.During this one-month, block rotation a series of modules are used to improve surgicalskills. The American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS) modules cover a widespectrum of Orthopaedic PGY 1 skills such as initial management of injured patients andbasic operative skills to prepare residents to participate in surgical procedures providesthe modules. Faculty and PGY1 residents follow the assessments and performancemetrics provided for each of the modules. Each day a module is performed under thedelivery of a faculty member.In the first year, all rotations are based on guidelines provided by theACGME www.acgme.org, which requires six months devoted to nonorthopaedic surgery rotations.

Yes, applications aresubmitted through ERAS.What are your USMLE Step 1, USMLE Step 2 CK, COMLEX Level 1, andCOMLEX Level 2 CE minimum score requirements? The orthopaedic academicprogram requires a pass on all clerkships. The USMLE score above 240 is considered,and comlex score above 550 part one and two.By the time of application, do I need to have completed the USMLE Step 2 CSor COMLEX Level 2 PE? Yes.Do you have a program application deadline? Yes, November 15, 2021.Do you have a Time since Graduation cut off? Yes, we prefer no gaps betweengraduating medical school and entering residency.Is US Clinical experience required? Yes.Do you accept applicants who require visa sponsorship? No, our program doesnot offer VISA sponsorship at this time.Do you have any specific requirements for Letters of Recommendation? No, we currently do not haveany IMGs in our program.The applicant if rotated is considered but not guaranteed an interview as this isdetermined by their efforts and recommendations of the faculty. The demonstrationof publications is helpful, but not always required. Diversity is looked at closely andsought after with above other listed recommendations. A commitment to orthopaedicwith strong basic medical knowledge in this field. The applicant should beable to carry on a good general discussion process without much stress.
