But everyone has been taking itall in their stride. Green grass is good.That’s the main message.Fairfax students continue to thrive.We are extremely fortunate tobe living where we are with thecurrent Covid-19 developments. Butunfortunately, we still have to followthe new restrictions that have comeinto effect. Please take the time toread through the latest updatesincluded in this newsletter.The main points we should be awareof: Parents are unable to come ontothe school grounds, unless for ascheduled parent/teacher meeting; Children are not to attend schoolif unwell. Parents will be asked tocollect children from school if theyare unwell. But please do not sendchildren to school if they have arunny nose or slight cough. If students are demonstrating anyflu-like symptoms, they should betested for Covid-19. Students cannot return to schoolwithout presentation of a negativeCovid test result.The main message that has comefrom the Department for Fairfax isthat we are currently Covid freeand we want to keep it that way.Therefore, we all need to endeavourto be aware and not fall intocomplacency. So please observehandwashing and hand sanitisingand 1.5m social distancing. Thankyou for your support.Congratulations to all studentsat Fairfax. I am so proud of yourexceptional behaviour andpositive attitude to learning.Every day it is a pleasure togreet you and work in theclassroom with you. Your lovefor learning is inspiring. Ofcourse, parents are a majorcontributing factor to thesequalities. The Frayer modelis a formative assessmenttool we have been using toinform our teaching whenused as a pre-assessment.The same tool used as a postassessment provides teacherswith evidence of learning butmore importantly gives eachstudent reason to celebratetheir growth in learning. Weare sharing this celebrationof your child’s learning withyou, so please celebrateyou child’s learning with yourchild.We would appreciate anyfeedbackregardingthisprocess. That is,to ask historical questions, selectappropriate historical sourcesto answer these questions andcommunicate their results in achosen format. Students haveMathematicsIn mathematics K-2 have beenexploring the topic of ‘position‘. Wehave been programming Spherorobots using phone and tabletdevices. Students have beendesigning paths for their robot andaccurately coding robots to followthe path. Their peers have beentesting the accuracy of their codes.Chelsea NobiloMaking insightful connectionsin her learningbegun this process by devisinga historical question they wouldlike to answer from their stagecontent. In the coming lessonsthey will begin researching theirinquiry question and plan howthey are going to communicatetheir findings. Stage 3 students willexperiment with presenting theirfindings in Sway.

3Enviro-storiesStudentshavebeenbusilyresearching and writing theirenviro-story based on the themeHealthy Plants, Healthy Me. Thefinished story must be submittednext week. Primary students arestrongly encouraged to work onsome illustrations over the weekendin order to complete their envirostory to a high standard.Premiers Reading ChallengeStudents are encouraged to logonand update their reading logs asthe challenge must be completedby 28.08.2020. Congratulationsto Blake who has completed thechallenge, having completed therequired texts and logging thesedetails.MathematicsStudents are wrapping up theirlearning on Whole Number andPosition. Primary students havebeen working with Google Mapsto create a scaled representationof the Maules Creek area. Studentshave become most proficient withtheir understanding and use of thevocabulary of Position.EnglishStudents have nearly completedtheir unit on Refugees. Studentshave really engaged with this unit,not only developing their Englishskills but developing a much greaterawareness of events in Australia’shistory and the stories of individualsand groups that have madeAustralia their home. Studentsthoroughly enjoyed their porkdumplings they cooked with MrsHarvey this week. The experiencemade so much more pleasurablewith a magnificent kitchen to cookin!Students have continued to learnabout the Habits with Habit No. 3,“Put First Things First” being thecurrent focus. Students will beexploring prioritisation of tasks intheir lives. A habit that I still findchallenging!PDHPESport has been focused onathletic skills with participation inDiscus and Shot Put so far. Thereis clear evidence of significantimprovement from last year. Thefocus last year obviously laid asolid foundation, with an impressivedisplay by students of correcttechnique this time round. Studentshave also significantly improvedin their ability to peer-assess andsupport each other’s learning.Today students have engagedin Road Safety lessons sponsoredby the NRMA. Road safety is amandatory component of thePDHPE syllabus. These lessons willcontinue over the next couple ofweeks.Professional LearningMrs Burtenshaw and Ms Smith haveattended ‘Microsoft Innovators inEducation‘ professional learning thisweek. They have taken a deep diveinto the suite of products Microsofthave to build 21st Century skills anddigital capabilities in teachers andstudents.New KitchenWe hope everyone enjoyed theflourless orange cake. It seemedfitting that our very first cookingsession in the new kitchen should bein Education Week. Thank you to MsSmith for organising this inauguraloccasion. Mine was delicious!P&CFairfax P&C will have their first everZoom meeting on Thursday at3.30pm so be sure to tune in.School Excellence in ActionThis term teachers have beeninvolved in training around thedevelopment of the new schoolplans to begin next year. Therehas been considerable investmentby the Department of Educationin supporting Principals and staffto engage in an authentic,evidence-based process to identifyour strategic directions for ourStrategic Improvement Plan. As asmall school we have two strategicdirections to identify and directfrom 2021 to 2024. The first strategicdirection is based on studentgrowth and attainment and iscommon to all NSW DoE schools.We will be developing a Situational Analysis which will inform ourfuture focus. We will be reachingout to parents to gain your input informing a strategic improvementplan that is contextual, authenticand aiming for excellence. Watchthis space.Diamond ArtMrs Deby Greenaway (Grandma)has been eager to get back intoschool to get crafty with students.Deby started each student on adiamond art painting in Week 3.Students have had three sessionsand have been extremely focusedand particular. Excellent for thedevelopment of fine-motor skillsand concentration. Everyone hasembraced this new opportunity.Unfortunately,withthenewCovid-19 restrictions Deby will haveto put her return to school on hold.

4COVID 19 updatesSchool attendanceStudents should be at school unless: they have a medical certificatewhich states that they are unableto return to school due to anongoing medical condition andthe expected timeframe they are currently unwell.In accordance with advice fromNSW HealthExternal link, parentsand carers are reminded NOT tosend children to school if they areunwell, even if they have the mildestflu-like symptoms. Schools will makearrangements for students whopresent as unwell or have flu-likesymptoms to be sent home.NSW Health have requested thatschools encourage anyone whois unwell or has even mild flulike symptoms, to arrange to betested through their local medicalpractitioner or one of the COVID-19clinicsExternal link.Students and staff with flu-likesymptoms will need to provide acopy of a negative COVID-19 testresult before being permitted toreturn to school.Schools are not required toconduct widespread temperaturescreening or mandate the wearingof a mask.All schools will be vigilant whenimplementing infection control,physical distancing and personalhygiene protocols to protect thehealth and safety of students andstaff. Schools will promote the needto follow good hygiene practicessuch as: regularly washing hands avoiding sharing drinks or food coughing or sneezing into yourelbow, or a tissue which should bediscarded immediately filling water bottles from bubblersrather than using the bubblerdirectly.School activities/school site usageFollowing recent advice receivedfrom NSW HealthExternal link, weare implementing additional safetymeasures for school activities. Thesehave been put in place to minimisethe risk of COVID-19 transmission inschools for the remainder of Term 3.The following principles underpinthese measures: Where possible, students will staywithin their relevant cohort group(i.e. class, year group, or stage)for all learning activities withintheir school in order to limit closecontacts to the relevant studentcohort. Interschool activities must remainwithin the local community or zone.This applies to all interschool sportand physical activities, curriculumactivities, arts activities and extracurricular activities organised orsponsored by the school. Schoolsmust not travel outside of their localcommunity area. Metropolitanschools cannot travel outside theirlocal area or to regional areas.Regional areas cannot travelinto metropolitan areas or otherregional areas. Find your school‘ssport zone. Only providers that are essentialto the delivery of curriculum cancontinue to provide services andprograms until further notice. Parents/carers and other nonessential visitors are not allowed onthe school site. All group singing (choirs) and/orother chanting activities, as well asthe use of wind instruments in groupsettings, are not permitted. Specialarrangements are in place for HSCstudents. Year 11 and 12 studentscompleting HSC subjects maycontinue to attend classes/activitiesrelating to subjects only availableon other campuses. All otherstudents including Year 11 studentsnot completing an HSC subject arenot to attend other campuses forthe remainder of Term 3. TAFE andother Vet programs may continue. Schoolformals,dances,graduation or other social eventsare not permitted Schools mayhold a Year 12 assembly at schoolwithout parents to recognise thecompletion of school. Schools mayconsider delaying events until laterin the year.Activities/site usage that can takeplace Use the school library Engage in sporting activitieswithin restrictions Canteens and uniform shops canopen at the principal’s discretion All VET work placements canproceed subject to the availabilityof placement, appropriate riskassessments, and a COVID-19Safety Plan must be in place. Trade Training Centres canoperate on school sites with aCOVID-19 Safety Plan in place School assemblies (limited to 15minutes and no external visitors) Students may attend otherschools for essential curriculumrelated reasons or placements(e.g. auditions or placement tests) Hydrotherapy pools can be used Incursions/externalproviderscan provide activities that supportdelivery of curriculum (e.g. musictutors, sport skills developmentprograms, science demonstrations,drama tutors, Healthy Harold) Day field trips to outdoor locationswithnophysicaldistancingrequirements can take place (e.g.DoEEnvironmentalEducationCentres and sport and recreationfacilities, trips to the local river tocollect water samples) Face-to-face TAFE attendance(see TAFE website for furtherinformation) School photos Department of Community andJustice services and programs Community use agreementsinvolving adult attendance musthave a COVID Safe Plan in place SRE/SEE lessons within restrictions Work experience for students witha COVID Safe Plan in place P&C meetings and events mustbe on-line only Parent/teacher meetings willbe online unless involving seriousmatters that require face to facediscussion.Activities on hold for Term 3

Kindergarten orientation - visit thedepartment’s transition resourcesfor some helpful ideas to keepfamilies and students engaged inpreparation for 2021. Year 7 orientation has beendelayed until Term 4 School camps Excursions (other than field tripsexplained above) Interstate excursions Internationalexcursions(cancelled until further notice) All students (except year 12students)attendingclasses/activities relating to subjects onlyavailable on other campuses Schoolorcommunity-runplaygroups Face-to-faceprofessionallearning for staff. Refer to thePhysical distancing guidelines. Parent and carer attendance atassemblies and other school events Parent and carer volunteers– e.g. parent reading helpers(note: canteen and uniform shopvolunteers are permitted) School-basedactivitiesthatinvolve large gathering of adults.These include parent/communitygatherings such as parent functions,working bees, fundraisers, schoolBBQs, large parent informationevenings, and large on-site culturalevents Interschoolsport,drama,debating and other events thatare not within the local communityor zone including gala days andregional sporting carnivals.
