Laws for Responsible Dog OwnersThe Dog Act 1976 is administered and enforced bylocal governments within their respective districts.The Act addresses the control and registration ofdogs; the ownership and keeping of dogs; and theobligations and rights of dog owners and others.Everyone who is a dog owner has a responsibilityto ensure that his or her dog is well looked after.In addition, it is important that dog owners respectother people in the community. This can beachieved by keeping dogs adequately confinedon their properties, on a leash in public places,preventing aggressive behaviour and controllingexcessive barking.As a nation of pet lovers, we rely on dog owners toresponsibly look after their dogs to ensure that wecan all live together peacefully and without fear.

Your responsibilitiesDog controlPenalty: 200 to 5,000If you own a dog, you have a legal responsibility to keepit under control, either within a fenced area on yourproperty or on a leash when in public.Dogs barkingPenalty: 200 to 5,000As a dog owner, you are responsible for ensuring thatyour dog is not creating a public nuisance by barkingexcessively. Nuisance barking also covers public placesadjoining the premises.Removal of dog droppingsPenalty: VariesDog droppings are a source of annoyance to other usersof footpaths and recreation areas. Most local governmentshave local laws that require the person in charge of thedog in a public place to remove their dog’s droppings andadequately dispose of it.Penalties for dog attacks Penalty: 3,000 to 20,000Potential imprisonmentA dog attack is a very serious matter. If your dog attacksa person or another animal, you will be held responsibleeven if you are not there at the time.Dog registrationPenalty: 200A dog owner is legally required to register his or her dogwith the appropriate local government if it is more thanthree months old. Contact your local government for aregistration form and list of applicable fees.Registration tagsPenalty: 200Your dog is required to wear a collar to which must beattached a valid registration tag. This tag will be issued byyour local government when you pay your registration fee.

Microchipping has been introduced forall dogs from the following dates: From 1 November 2013, dogs must bemicrochipped when they are registered for thefirst time or when a change of ownership occurs. By 30 November 2013 all dangerous dogs,which includes restricted breeds, and commercialsecurity dogs, must be microchipped. By 1 November 2015, all dogs must bemicrochipped.Dangerous dogsDangerous dogs can be of any breed; however, somebreeds are more prone to attacking than others.Measures are in place to increase the safety ofthe community and to ensure that the owners takeincreased responsibility for dogs that are known to bepotentially dangerous.Some breeds have been declared restricted inAustralia and Western Australia.Local lawsEach local government is able to introduce local lawson a range of matters for dog control including specifieddog exercise areas and the number of dogs allowed tobe kept at a premise.
