Vision for the Library, Press and ArchivesOur key priority areasBuilding the researcher of the futureOur students and early career academics face many challenges navigating the sea ofscholarly information. ANU students and staff require capabilities to deal with thecomplexities of scholarly communication to support their research and future careers. Theprograms and initiatives of the Division focused on capabilities to support the researcher inthe digital world include: Researcher identities including ORCID Building digital and information literacy skills including publishing capabilities Services that support research data including training and the Data Commons Collaboration with other areas in the University to strengthen researchcommunication and skills International contributions including with ANU Research centres to improve highereducation, particularly in the Asia Pacific region.Transforming the University’s internationally significant collectionsOur collections have grown over more than 70 years through collaboration with theacademic community to create an infrastructure that is vital for research and study. Thecollections include the original work of ANU scholars, including the thesis collection, aswell as original and published resources from around the world. Over 22 kilometres ofarchival collections encompass resources of international and national significanceThe Australian National University 2

Vision for the Library, Press and Archivesrecognised through listing on the Australian UNESCO Memory of the World Register andattract international scholars to study using the collection. The print collection of close to40 kilometres includes works from the fourteenth century, with special strengths in Asiaand the Pacific and increasingly in moving towards a digital access paradigm.Our scholars need to use collection resources in new and different ways –transformingcollection access through digital scholarship services such as data and text mining areinnovations that are essential for excellence in research and education.Areas of activity include: Innovative collection building programs to provide collections of significance Digitisation programs to enable collections as far as possible to be accessible tothe world demonstrating the University’s strengths and supporting internationalcollaboration Collaborative approaches to digitisation with digital humanities scholars fromaround the world and other institutions Innovative programs to support new uses of the collection including data and textmining Exhibitions both online and in the libraries to highlight collections and collaborations Collaboration with academics to marshal international resources such as openeducational resources to support innovation in education.Engagement of the university’s research internationallyANU academics and students conduct world class research in an extraordinary range ofdisciplines. Our support to assist the reach of the research include the ANU Press, OpenResearch Repository and Data Commons. These services, together with capabilitybuilding in scholarly communication and digitisation of the University’s research arecontributing towards access to and impact and engagement of ANU’s research to theacademic community, society and public policy makers across the globe.Key areas of activities include:The Australian National University 3

Vision for the Library, Press and Archives The transformation of ANU Press to an international world class publisher Developing the Open Research repository to increase the visibility and readershipfor ANU research outputs Developing the ANU Data Commons to support greater open access to ANUresearch data sets Participation in international collaborative activities that will innovatively increase theimpact and engagement with ANU research outputs Contributing to good practice in data governance, privacy and copyright Developing collaborations with partners such as the Australian Institute ofAboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies and National Library of Australia oninitiatives that enable greater access to our research outputs.Leaning and research spaces to support a high quality universityexperienceANU academics and students increasingly require access to spaces for research andstudy in the library. The importance of library spaces is demonstrated through surveys ofclients and the increasing use of our spaces. Space needs to keep pace with increasinglycomplex needs of services to support use of digital services to enhance research, enablethe collections to be opened up to the Canberra community and to support increasedengagement with the university while providing safe spaces.Key initiatives in this area include: Increasing 24 x 7 access for spaces and services (such as LibGuides and otheronline support and open access publications) Providing spaces that support digital scholarship and services to support thetransformative use of the collections Developing research spaces to support higher degree by research students Developing a vision for a new library and collection storage with a high level of inputfrom students and academics.The Australian National University 4
