Initially, SAGE grew out of a two-yearstudy by the social studies department of theSummit College Club. A local council on agingemerged from the club’s commitment to educateitself and the community on issues affecting olderresidents. Council representation came from civicgroups, churches, social agencies, and interestedresidents and resulted in the formation of SAGE –Summit Association for Gerontological Endeavor.SAGE Eldercare is distinguished among its fieldas being one of the oldest eldercare agenciesin New Jersey and also one of a few nonprofiteldercare agencies in the United States that offers acomprehensive array of services under one roof.SAGE is a pioneer in providing care for older adults,beginning with its HomeCare services in 1954.SAGE started one of New Jersey’s first Meals onWheels programs in 1966 and opened New Jersey’sfirst adult day health care program in 1975. Many ofthe services and programs provided by SAGE haveserved as models for those used by other public andprivate agencies. Annually, the nonprofit servesmore than 7,000 older people and their familiesin Union, Essex, Morris, and Somerset Counties,and beyond.

ADULT DAY PROGRAMWHO SHOULD CONSIDER THE SPEND-A-DAYPROGRAM?Spend-A-Day helps older adults remain living in theirhomes by offering a safe place to spend the day. It alsoprovides valuable respite for spouses, adult children,their families, and other caregivers. MEALS ON WHEELSMore than a meal.“The reliable,delicious mealsand kind peoplebrighten my daysand give myfamily peaceof mind.”10 www.sageeldercare.orgAt the core of SAGE’s Meals on Wheels serviceis a nutritious meal, companionship, and awatchful eye on the health and safety of ourclients who are frail, homebound, or disabled.This includes those recuperating from an illness,those who are mentally or physically impaired,those without family or friends to shop for them,or those needing a special diet. There are noincome requirements.Meals on Wheels provides thorough in-homesupport with ancillary services like licensedSocial Work Support, Meals with Friends,Grocery Shopping, Errands, and an EmergencyFood Pantry. Caregivers also gain peace of mindand respite as SAGE partners with them incaring for their loved ones. Now in its 51st year,the program is expanding its Meals with Friendsinitiative to provide daytime visits to SAGE forthe most isolated older adults.

MEALS ON WHEELSSAGE ELDERCARE CURRENTLY DELIVERS MEALS TO:Berkeley HeightsNew ProvidenceChathamShort eals are planned by a registered dietician. In some areas, we areable to provide special diets, including diabetic and renal meals.All meals are relatively low in fat and sodium. The meals aredelivered Monday through Friday and can be scheduled for a shorttime or indefinitely. Extra food for the weekend can be deliveredwith the Friday meal for those in need.Caring Meals on Wheels volunteers deliver meals and visit brieflywith program participants between 11:00 am and 12:30 pm.Clients must be home to receive their meals, unless specialarrangements are made. GROCERY SHOPPINGAND ERRAND SERVICE“We look forward tothe cheerful volunteerswho devote so much oftheir time to keepingus well. All requests willbe considered.

GROCERY SHOPPING AND ERRAND SERVICESERVICES ARE OFFERED IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS:Berkeley HeightsNew ProvidenceChathamShort HOPPING SERVICEDeliveries can be once a week or once in a while,whatever you need. Occasional participants, onceenrolled in the program, simply need to call SAGE byFriday morning to request service for the following week.If possible, mail, fax, or email your shopping list to us.Or, we can pick it up at your home early in the week.Orders are delivered Wednesday or Thursday morning,depending on the town in which you live.A nominal fee is charged for this service. You can send ina check for your groceries with your shopping list, or wecan pick it up at your home. INFORMATIONAND REFERRALSIf you don’t know where to turn,ask SAGE.“SAGE put us on theright path for the bestcare. InfoCare wasa lifesaver.”14 www.sageeldercare.orgIf you need assistance or information, areoverwhelmed by health care choices, or noteven sure what to ask, we can help. Our staffwill provide social service support, referrals,resources, and more. InfoCare – our informationand referral service – provides older adults andfamily caregivers with support, information,consultations, and referrals through telephoneoutreach.When you contact InfoCare, your concernswill be addressed by a Licensed ClinicalSocial Worker (LCSW) who understandsthe complexities of navigating communityresources, as well as the psychosocial issuesrelated to aging and caregiving. The socialworker will provide consultation, guidance, andfollow-up, to address your needs.

EDUCATION AND SUPPORTEXERCISE CLASSESSAGE’s exercise classes are offered to help withstrength, balance, and fall prevention. They are opento anyone 60 years of age and older. Current classesinclude Fun-to-be-Fit, Gentle Chair Yoga, and Tai Chi.The exercise programs are open to the public and aredesigned with a gentle approach for all fitness levels toimprove strength, flexibility, and overall conditioningin an effort to prevent falls.
