A Microsoft account is an emailaddress and password you use to sign in to other Microsoft services like Xbox, Outlook.com,OneDrive, Skype, or Windows Phone. If you don’t already have a Microsoft account, you can createone during setup.Charge your Surface Book1. Connect the two parts of the power cord.2. Connect the power cord securely to the charging port on your Surface Book. A lightappears at the end of the connector when your Surface is getting power.3. Set up WindowsPress the power button to turn on yourSurface Book.Windows starts and guides you through thesetup process. During setup you’ll connect to awireless network and choose a language, colorscheme, and name for your Surface.For more info, see Set up your Surface onSurface.com.Choose a mode to work inYou can configure your Surface Book to suitwhatever you’re doing at the moment. Withthe Clipboard attached to the full-size backlitkeyboard, Surface Book is a high-performancelaptop.The keyboard attaches to the Clipboard with a friction mechanism. You can detach the keyboardand reattach it in the position you want.To detach the keyboard:1. Press and hold the Detach keykey glows red, then green., or select Detachin the taskbar, until the LED on the2. With the Clipboard detached from thekeyboard, Surface Book becomes a thin,light tablet that works perfectly withOneNote and Surface Pen. It even has itsown battery, giving you several hours ofuse with the keyboard detached.To reattach the keyboard, align thekeyboard and Clipboard and bring themtogether until they click into place.Turn the Clipboard around and reattach itto use Surface Book like a creative canvas.By reconnecting it to the keyboard, youhave access to the USB ports and theDisplayPort and you have more batterytime.Show your screen to other people in theroom by attaching the Clipboard to thekeyboard so you’re looking at the back ofthe Clipboard as you type. 2016 MicrosoftPage 6

Note: Surface Book uses battery power to release the Clipboard. If the battery is too low, thegreen light won’t come on and you won’t be able to detach the keyboard from the Clipboard.Charge your Surface Book until you have enough power to disable the friction mechanism.The basicsHere are a few basic things to know about your Surface Book.Power and chargingSurface Book has two batteries—one in the keyboard and one in the Clipboard. It takes two to fourhours to charge Surface Book fully from an empty state. It can take longer if you’re using yourSurface Book for power-intensive activities like gaming or video streaming while you’re charging it.You can use the USB port on your power supply to charge other devices, like a phone, while yourSurface Book charges. Note that the USB port on the power supply is only for charging, not fordata transfer. If you want to use a USB device, plug it into the USB port on your Surface Book.Check the battery levelYou can check the battery level from the lock screen or on the desktop. 2016 MicrosoftPage 7

Lock screenWhen you wake your Surface Book, the batterystatus appears in the lower-right corner of thelock screen.Desktop taskbarOn the desktop, select the battery status iconon the right side of the taskbar. The batterystatus pane shows the charging level for bothbatteries.When your Surface Book is fully charged, itshould last up to 10 hours for web browsing.Making your battery lastTo learn ways to conserve power and make your battery last longer, see Surface battery and poweron Surface.com.Power states: On, off, sleep, and restartHere's how to turn your Surface Book on, shut it down, restart and wake it, and put it into a powersaving state.On or wakePress and release the power button on Surface Book. Don’t use your Surface for a few minutes. Go to Start Close the keyboard.Go to Start, and select Power Sleep., and select Power Restart.For more info, see Surface power states on Surface.com.Touch, keyboard, pen, and mouseWith Surface Book, you can switch easily between using the touchscreen, the keyboard, a mouse,or a pen.TouchscreenYou can use your fingers on the touchscreen just as you would on a smartphone. For more info, see How to use the Surfacetouch keyboard on Surface.com.KeyboardThe Surface Book keyboard has a standard layout and includes backlit keys. Special shortcut keysand function keys help you do common tasks quickly. Keys on the top row double as functionkeys—hold down the Fn key while you press a top-row key.
