A misty, early spring morning in the garden at Old WesleyDaleRun in association with the AustralianAssociation of Friends of Botanic Gardens,this boutique tour to Tasmania exploresthe many and varied botanical, historical,culinary and scenic offerings of this smallbut richly endowed island state.The diversity of Tasmania’s vegetation isremarkable and includes some of the mostancient plant species on Earth, the tallestflowering trees, the oldest plant clones and ahigh proportion of endemic species. Its pristinenatural beauty and outstanding local food andwine form an ever-present backdrop to its richculture and history, and of course its manybeautiful and historic gardens.This bespoke tour with the AAFBG examines thediverse botany of Tasmania, with a wide range ofspecialist visits and fascinating talks by botanicalexperts.

Tour LeaderNow semi-retired, Kate Heffernan’s career inhorticulture spans more than 40 years. The lasttwo decades have been spent in professionaland volunteer roles with Gold Coast RegionalBotanic Gardens (GCRBG) and as a consultantto other botanic gardens in Queensland andVictoria. Kate is a former Chair of BGANZQueensland, later National Representative,and also a member of BGCI and AAFBG. Shehas made presentations at Australian andinternational conferences.Kate was also a vocational horticultureand landscape teacher, undertaking thedevelopment of many community landscapeprojects on the Gold Coast and Brisbane asa practical component of student training.A feature writer from 2003, Kate wrote forjournals including Horticulture Australia, weeklyarticles for Gold Coast papers and was SaturdayMorning Garden presenter for ABC Gold Coast.Kate recently published a book ‘CelebratingRegional Biodiversity‘, which tells the story ofthe unique South East Queensland flora throughthe lens of GCRBG.A keen traveller, with an emphasis on gardenbased travel, Kate has led tours to the gardensof France, United Kingdom, Ireland and awildflower tour to Western Australia. She hastravelled widely in Australia and overseas. Katehas been awarded the Gold Coast Australia DayEnvironmental Achievement Award for her rolein the establishment of GCRBG; QueenslandAustralia Day Award for Vocational Trainingand was Gold Coast Teacher of the Year.
