While we offer a range of products andsolutions, this brochure provides guidelines forgeneral building applications for which PPCSUREBUILD 42,5 N and IDM 32,5 are ideallysuited.Mix yields (m3) per bag, are based on typicalproportions for various applications. To experience the full benefits and most costeffective mixes of quality PPC SUREBUILD42,5 N or IDM 32,5, always refer to thespecific mix proportions on the back of thebags for a specific project.INTRODUCTIONPC prod brochure portrait 2017 1.indd 52017/04/11 3:09:51 PM

GENERAL TIPS FOR SUCCESSFULPROJECTSCement storage & use Use the contents of opened bags as soon aspossible. Reseal opened bags or keep them inclosed containers for later use Lumps in cement indicate that the bag has beenexposed to moisture If these lumps can be broken easily by hand, thecement may be used but add a little extra cementto each mix If the lumps are hard, do not use the cement forbuilding applications Cement bags should be stored in a weatherproofshed or container Cement bags should be tightly packed, off thefloor or on plastic, not more than 12 bags or twopallets high Cement bags should be covered with a plasticsheet or tarpaulin Cement bags should be stored so as to ensure“first in-first out” use, preferably within two tothree monthsPC prod brochure portrait 2017 1.indd 62017/04/11 3:09:51 PM

Mixes should be small enough to ensure that thewhole mix is used within two hours of mixing 1 bag of cement has a volume of 33 litres 1 builders’ wheelbarrow has a volume of 65 litreswhich is equivalent to TWO bags of cement1 wheelbarrow (65 litres)2 x 50 kg bags of cementGENERAL TIPSPC prod brochure portrait 2017 1.indd 72017/04/11 3:09:51 PM

Mixing Use full bags of cement when batching, except forsmall batches made for less critical work Use the recommended mix proportions on theback of the bag Use a concrete mixer or manually mix on a dry, clean, non-absorbent surface When mixing manually, first mix the cement, sandand water thoroughly and for concrete, mix in thestone last – this saves a lot of effort Mix until a uniform colour is achieved Use good quality aggregates and potable water Add just sufficient water to make a plastic, workable mix Do not add too much water – this will reduce thestrengthPC prod brochure portrait 2017 1.indd 82017/04/11 3:09:51 PM

Transporting, placing and compaction ofconcrete Concrete should be transported from the mixerin such a way as to avoid contamination andsegregation Concrete should be placed as near as possible toits final position Concrete must be compacted by hand or withmechanical vibrators to remove all entrapped airCuring Mortar, plaster and concrete gain strength over aperiod of time when water is present Curing is essential and may be done by covering itwith plastic sheeting, damp hessian, damp sand,or by spraying it with water regularly to preventthe placed mix from drying out If the placed mix is allowed to dry out, it will notreach its potential strength, and may crack Cure the mortar, plaster or concrete for at leastfive days in normal weather and seven days invery cold or very hot weatherGENERAL TIPSPC prod brochure portrait 2017 1.indd 92017/04/11 3:09:51 PM

MORTAR & PLASTERMaterials for bricklaying & plasteringCEMENT:Both PPC SUREBUILD 42,5 N and IDM 32,5 aresuitable cements for use in mortars and plastersSAND:For building: (bricklaying/mortar/dagha) Use abuilders’ sand, generally unwashed and preferablyfree of twigs, roots or other foreign matterFor plaster: Ask your supplier for clean plaster sand. This is generally a washed sand, free of twigs roots orother foreign matterWATER:Use clean water - If you can drink it, it is suitable forbuildingYIELD:The yield is how much mortar or plaster you will getwhen you mix all the materials togetherPC prod brochure portrait 2017 1.indd 102017/04/11 3:09:52 PM

Mixing Remove any lumps, stones or foreign objects fromthe sand Mix cement and sand together until uniform incolour Slowly add clean water while mixing, until it is likea thick paste, yet wet enough to be spread easilywith a trowelIMPORTANT: Mix only as much mortaror plaster as you can use in two hours.Covering of the mix to prevent drying out isrecommended. After two hours, if the mixbecomes too stiff to be used, it should bediscarded and a fresh mix madeDo not add water to a stiff mix to regainworkability, as this will reduce the strengthMORTAR & PLASTERPC prod brochure portrait 2017 1.indd 112017/04/11 3:09:52 PM

GENERAL CONCRETE MIXESMaterials for concreteCEMENT:Both PPC SUREBUILD 42,5 N and IDM 32,5 aresuitable cements for use in concreteSAND:Ask your supplier for clean concrete sand. The sandshould be free of twigs, roots or other foreign matterSTONE:13mm or 19mm stone size is ideal for makingconcreteWATER:Clean water - If you can drink it, it is suitable formaking concrete. Only add enough water to obtain aworkable, plastic mix. Too much water will weaken theconcretePC prod brochure portrait 2017 1.indd 142017/04/11 3:09:55 PM

The secret to strong concreteMaking concrete is easy. There are many concreteprojects; foundations, flooring slabs, fish ponds, driveways etc, that the homeowner can confidentlytackle using PPC SUREBUILD 42,5 N or IDM 32,5cement.The secret to strong concrete is to use power-packedcement like PPC SUREBUILD 42,5 N or IDM 32,5, andnever use too much water.Calculating how much concrete will beneededConcrete is always placed into a ‘form’ or hollowin the ground. To work out how much concrete youneed, first measure the volume of the space you needto fill.1. For flat Slabs, foundations and driveways:Use a measuring tape to measure the length, widthand depth of the volume to be filled and multiplythese together to calculate how many cubic meters(m3) of concrete you will need. For example: length 4,5 m, width - 4 m, and depth 0,1m (4,5 m x 4,0 m x0,1 m) 1,8 m3 concrete will be required.GENERAL CONCRETE MIXESPC prod brochure portrait 2017 1.indd 152017/04/11 3:09:55 PM

2. For post holes (cylindrical shapes):Use a measuring tape to measure the diameter(width) and depth of the hole. Multiply the diameterby the diameter again, then multiply this total by thedepth and then by 0,8 to calculate how many cubicmeters (m3) of concrete you will need. For example:Diameter - 0,3 m, Depth - 0,5 m (0,3 m x 0,3 m x 0,5m x 0,8) 0.036 m3 concrete will be required. How to mix concrete1. Mechanical mixing If you use a concrete mixer, the batch size shouldsuit the mixer. Underfilling the mixer wastes time, while overfilling results in spillage and poor mixing Measure the quantity of stone and place it intothe mixer. Add a little water to wet the stone Add the measured quantity of PPC SUREBUILD42,5 N or IDM 32,5 Add the measured quantity of sand Finally add water, a little at a time, until theconcrete is flowable but not wetPC prod brochure portrait 2017 1.indd 162017/04/11 3:09:55 PM

2. Manual MixingFor larger batches: Measure out the sand and spread it on a flat, clean, hard surface Pour PPC SUREBUILD 42,5 N or IDM 32,5 cementon top of the sand and mix to a uniform colour Slowly add water and mix thoroughly. Leavemixing in the stone to last - this saves a lot ofeffort. The cement, sand and water mixture, oncemixed thoroughly, will look wet but will stiffenup as soon as the stone is added. Ensure thestone is mixed throughout the concrete beforetransporting the concrete Mix the concrete close where it will be used For small batches: the concrete may be mixed ina wheelbarrow, following the same sequence asabovePlacing concrete Concrete must be placed within one hour ofmixing Place the concrete as close to its final position aspossible If the concrete is being placed on the ground, make sure the ground is compacted anddampened with a spray of water before placingthe concrete Once placed, spread the concrete evenly with arake or spadeGENERAL CONCRETE MIXESPC prod brochure portrait 2017 1.indd 172017/04/11 3:09:55 PM

The concrete should be well compacted with arod, wooden tamper or spade, to remove as muchair as possible and making sure that the concretefills the form or hole completely Curing is critical – prevent evaportation of waterfrom the concrete, and once it has stiffened, keep the concrete damp by covering it withplastic sheeting, damp hessian, damp sand, orby spraying it with water regularly. For optimumstrength, this curing process should be continuedfor seven days For driveways, keep vehicles off the concrete for atleast seven daysREMEMBER: Too much water will reduce the finalstrength of the concrete. The following tables show the yield per bag fortypical concrete mixes made with PPC SUREBUILD42,5 N or IDM 32,5 cement when mixed according tothe mix proportions on the back of the bag. Both ofthese products comply with SANS 50197.To take full advantage of the benefits of using a PPCSUREBUILD 42,5 N or IDM 32,5 cement, refer to theback of the bag for the specific mix instructionsand proportions.PC prod brochure portrait 2017 1.indd 182017/04/11 3:09:55 PM

Making brick and block mixes1. Sieve out lumps, stones, twigs or foreign objectsfrom the sand2. Measure out the sand and spread on a flat, clean, hard surface such as a metal sheet or a concreteslab3. Mix PPC SUREBUILD 42,5 N or IDM 32,5 andsand together until uniform in colour4. Create a hollow in the centre and slowly add cleanwater while mixing. The mix is correct when itforms a ball when squeezed in your hand (If waterruns out between your fingers, too much waterhas been added)How to mould the bricks or blocks Sweep the slab clean and then wet it Fill your brick/block-making mould with the brick/block mortar mixture Push the top handles of the machine down topress the mortar into the mould to compact itwell. Good compaction increases the strength ofyour brick/blocks Lift the side handles to release the mould Lift the mould off the bricks/blocks Do not move the bricks/blocks, but cover themimmediately with plastic sheeting to keep themdamp and to shield them from the sun and wind Only after 24 hours can the bricks/blocks bemoved to the stacking area and be stockpiledPC prod brochure portrait 2017 1.indd 222017/04/11 3:09:57 PM

The stockpiled bricks/blocks should be coveredand kept damp for another seven days to cure andgain strength Uncover the bricks/blocks but keep them storedfor a further seven days to allow for any shrinkagethat might take place (if the bricks/blocks are usedbefore they have cured, they may cause the wallto crack!)How to test the quality of the product1. Keep a record of the number of broken or crackedbricks/blocks in each day’s production. A largenumber is usually a sign of a poor mix e.g. toomuch water, too little cement unsuitable sand orpoor compaction2. After seven days of curing you can test thestrength of your bricks/blocks by drying them andknocking two together. If they make a “ringing”sound, it indicates good strength. If they make adull “thud”, it indicates poor strengthMAKING BRICKS & BLOCKS ON A SMALL SCALEPC prod brochure portrait 2017 1.indd 232017/04/11 3:09:57 PM
