6 Your car insurance policyQUICK GUIDEYOUR POLICYYOUR COVERSMALL PRINTExcesses explainedAn ‘excess’ is the part of each claim that you’re expected to pay. This varies depending on the type of claim you’re making. For accidental damage, fire, and theft claims, there are both ‘voluntary’ and ‘compulsory’ excesses which you’ll have to paywhen you make a claim. We set the compulsory excess, and you choose the voluntary excess when you take out or renew thepolicy. The level you choose will affect the cost of your insurance.
