CCSH CANDIDATE HANDBOOKIntroductionExamination OverviewThe Certification in Clinical Sleep Health (CCSH)examination assesses the professional competence ofhealthcare providers and educators who work directlywith sleep medicine patients, families, and practitioners tocoordinate and manage patient care, improve outcomes,educate patients and the community, and advocate for theimportance of good sleep.The CCSH examination is developed and administeredin accordance with the 1999 “Standards for Educationaland Psychological Testing” (American Education Research Association, American Psychological Association,and National Council on Measurement in Education)as well as the 1978 “Uniform Guidelines on EmployeeSelection Procedures” (Equal Employment OpportunityCommission, et al).A passing score on the examination is required for anindividual to earn the CCSH credential. Each candidatemust demonstrate competence in the practice of clinicalsleep health commensurate with the standards established by the BRPT for effective and safe patient careand education. All candidates and CCSH certificants arerequired to abide by the BRPT Standards of Conduct andpolicies and procedures.The BRPT Candidate Handbook describes the importantaspects of the certification process. It is designed toassist candidates in preparation for the examination andtheir roles as clinical sleep health specialists. The handbook contains an overview of the examination, eligibilitypolicies, rules for taking the examination, informationabout the application, suggested study resources andpertinent facts concerning administrative policies governing the examination and credential. Sample questionsare provided to familiarize candidates with the types ofquestions appearing on the scenario-based multiplechoice examination.The CCSH exam is computer based and consists of100 multiple choice items. The test presents each itemwith four response alternatives (a, b, c and d). Credit isgranted for selection of the single best response. Thereis no penalty for guessing and candidates are encouragedto choose a response for each item. Candidates have 3hours to complete the test.The CCSH application is available at www.brpt.org.Applicants should submit the application andrequired documents to BRPT for review and approval as soon as they have a target date in mindto take the examination. The earlier the application is received the better the chance of obtainingthe preferred exam date, time and location.»»The exam is offered on an on-demand basis. Thismeans that once approved, candidates may schedulean exam on any available date and time within theireligibility window. The eligibility window begins onthe date of payment for the exam and ends one yearfrom the date of exam approval OR upon expirationof the candidate’s eligibility credential or Basic LifeSupport (BLS) requirement, whichever occurs first.»»Exam results are available on the computer screenimmediately upon completion of the test. A detailedscore report is available upon departure from thetesting center. CCSH CANDIDATE HANDBOOKEligibility Requirementsa sleep health specialist with certification in clinicalsleep health (CCSH).There are 3 eligibility pathways for the CCSH exam; oneis temporary and available only through March 31, 2017.Applicants should review the eligibility requirementsfor each pathway to determine which one best meetstheir qualifications and background. Applicants mustmeet ALL eligibility requirements of the selectedpathway as of the date of application. To take theCCSH examination, applicants must2.Proof of education in the form of an official transcript,diploma, letter, or certificate from the educationprovider. Only the highest education level attained isrequired.3.Documentation of valid BLS certification or international equivalent.»»Satisfy the requirements for ONE of the exam eligibility pathways.Candidates must have:»»Submit a completed application, all required supportdocuments, and fees.»»Agree to follow BRPT Standards of Conduct andpolicies and procedures.»»Except for purposes of recertification, those withan active CCSH may not take the examination. ACCSH who applies to take the examination forreasons other than recertification violates the BRPTStandards of Conduct and is subject to professionaldisciplinary review.Eligibility PathwaysCCSH Pathway 2: Healthcare Credential1.A current healthcare credential or license identified inthe List of Approved Credentials for CCSH Pathway2. International equivalents are accepted, includingtertiary/post secondary education or qualification inthe absence of other regulation.2.An Associate’s degree or above. Internationalequivalents in the form of tertiary/post secondaryeducation or qualification are accepted.3.Valid BLS certification for healthcare workers orinternational equivalent.Candidates are required to provide:1.Evidence of a current CCSH Pathway 2 approvedhealthcare credential or license, or internationalequivalent.2.Proof of education in the form of an official transcript,diploma, letter, or certificate from the educationprovider. Only the highest education level attained isrequired.3.Documentation of valid BLS certification or international equivalent.CCSH Pathway 1: Clinical Experience. Forcandidates with at least 1000 hours of experience inclinical sleep health AND a bachelor’s degree or above.CCSH Pathway 2: Healthcare Credential. Forcandidates with an approved healthcare credential orlicense AND an associate’s degree or above.PATHWAY DETAILSCCSH Pathway 1: Clinical ExperienceProof Of EducationCandidates must have:Acceptable forms of proof of education include1.»»An official transcript, official letter from a college, ordiploma from the education provider.»»International equivalents in the form of tertiary/postsecondary education or qualification.2.3.A minimum of 1000 hours of cumulative direct experience in clinical sleep health that includes education,counseling, management, and coordination of patientcare and outcomes.A Bachelor’s degree or above. International equivalents in the form of tertiary/post secondary educationor qualification are accepted.Documentation of valid BLS certification for healthcare workers or international equivalent.Candidates are required to provide:1.Verification of clinical experience on the application.Clinical experience must be validated and approvedby a clinical manager, sleep medicine practitioner, orBRPT CCSH Candidate HandbookBLS CertificationAll CCSH certificants and exam candidates must holdvalid BLS certification for healthcare workers (or equivalent for international applicants). BLS must be currentat the time of application and it should remain currentthrough testing. BLS programs must include a hands-onpractical training evaluation segment and the candidatemust provide documentation that shows demonstration5

CCSH CANDIDATE HANDBOOKof skills. A copy of the front of the BLS card or certificatemust be submitted with the application. Candidatesshould not submit their original BLS card whenmailing documentation. Online CPR courses thatdo not include a hands-on practical training evaluationsegment may NOT be used to fulfill this requirement.Candidates with questions regarding the application,supplemental documents, fees, or eligibility should referto the BRPT website Contact page. If they are unableto find the information they need, they should submittheir questions to info@brpt.org. Inquiries to this emailare acknowledged within 2 business days of receipt.Acknowledgements Of UnderstandingExamination FeesEligibility for the CCSH examination and maintenanceof the credential once achieved require adherenceto the BRPT Standards of Conduct and policies andprocedures. Exam candidates are required to sign astatement as part of the exam application processto acknowledge their understanding of and consequences for violations to the BRPT Standards ofConduct and/or policies and procedures. Violationsmay result in sanctions including restriction or loss ofeligibility to take the CCSH or other BRPT certificationexaminations, or the suspension or revocation of theCCSH or other BRPT credential.The examination fee is due at the time of application.Candidates must pay the examination fee in UnitedStates dollars. The exam fee is valid for up to one yearfrom the date of payment and for only one examinationsession within that year.To protect the security of the examination and maintainthe validity of test scores, candidates are required toagree to a Confidentiality and Nondisclosure Agreement(NDA) that is presented at the beginning of the exam.Failure to accept the terms of the NDA results inimmediate termination of the exam.Application ProceduresTo apply for the CCSH examination, candidates mustsubmit to the BRPT a completed exam application. Theexam application can either be completed entirely onlinethrough our Self Service Portal, or through a printable.pdf application which must be mailed to our corporateoffice. Any New Candidate application that is mailed toour office must be in original ink. Any New Candidateapplication that is faxed or photocopied will be rejectedand returned to the applicant.If the application is incomplete for ANY reason, it isrejected and returned to teh application for resubmission. Applicants must include a 50 resubmissionfee when resubmitting the application. BRPTencourages applicants to read and follow the applicationinstructions carefully.Candidates should submit their application and allrequired documents and fees as early as possible. Earlysubmission greatly increases the candidate’s chance ofsecuring a testing date, time, and location of the candidate’s choice.6The BRPT will also accept money orders or cashier’schecks. The BRPT accepts American Express, MasterCard and Visa. BRPT does not accept personal checks.CCSH Exam FeePathways 450.00 (U.S.)PATHWAYS 1 AND 2RESUBMISSION FEEApplications that have been rejected and returned tocandidates for any reason after submission to BRPTrequire a 50 rejection fee upon resubmission.REFUNDSApplicants may cancel an application and receive a refundof the application fee less a 50.00 administrative charge.To receive a refund candidates must:1.Cancel their application with the BRPT ExecutiveOffice BEFORE their exam window expires. Failureto do so before that time will result in the originalexam fee payment being forfeited, and the applicantwill have to reapply/pay again.2.Cancel a scheduled exam appointment directly withPearson VUE up to 5 pm EST at least one businessday prior to the testing appointment. Pearson Vuerequires at least 24 hours notice of cancellation,failure to do so will result in a 100 “No Show” fee.The BRPT cannot cancel any exam for the applicant.It must be done directly by the applicant.Board of Registered Polysomnographic TechnologistsTM, Inc.

CCSH CANDIDATE HANDBOOKRESCHEDULING OR POSTPONING FEEThere is no fee to reschedule or postpone a scheduledexam appointment as long as the candidate givesPearson Vue at least 24 hours notice, and as long as it isdone before their exam window has expired.NO-SHOW/REINSTATEMENT FEECandidates who do not take the exam on the scheduleddate and do not cancel or reschedule with adequate timewill be considered a “No Show” candidate. “No Show”candidates are not eligible for a refund of their examination fee. “No Show” candidates may reschedule anexam after paying a 100 reinstatement fee. “No Show”candidates may reschedule up to one year from the dateof their initial approval to test notice.New vs. Reapplying ApplicationCandidates should apply as a New Candidate if»»They have not taken the exam before.»»They failed their last exam 3 or more years ago.»»They once held their CCSH more than 5 years ago.Candidates should apply as a Reapplying Candidate if»»They failed a previous exam less than 3 years ago.Background ChecksApplicants must answer yes or no to a series of backgroundquestions in the application. Answering yes to any or all of thequestions does not automatically deny eligibility. Applicantsthat answer yes must submit a narrative for each incidentidentified by the background questions, including the dateand location of the incident, the outcome of any proceedingsassociated with it, and any penalties/sentencing they incurred.In addition, the applicant must submit copies of officialdocumentation clearly stating that any and all obligations tothe court, governing body, etc. have been met, and all penalties and sentences have been fulfilled. Failure to provide therequired documentation results in rejection of the application.European Union residents are advised to check applicablecriminal record restrictions as mandated by GDPR.Application ApprovalBRPT does not consider approval of an application untilALL the required documents and a complete applicationare received. The application and required documentsshould arrive in one submission. The BRPT cannot conjoinBRPT CCSH Candidate Handbookapplication materials if they are sent separately. If theapplication is incomplete or required documents aremissing, BRPT will reject and return the applicationto the candidate for resubmission. A 50 rejection feeis required at the time of resubmission.If the application is complete and all supporting documentation is received and valid, applicants receive an approvalemail which will instruct the applicant on how to scheduletheir exam with Pearson Vue.Applicant EmailBRPT uses email as its official form of communication.Applicants must supply a valid email address. Applicantsshould double check that the email provided in the application is valid and accurate. The approval to test and examconfirmation notices are sent to applicants via email. Theycontain important instructions for contacting Pearson VUEto schedule a testing appointment and for completing atesting session. The notices also identify the time period forwhich the test schedule and test window are valid.Candidates who work in organizations that have a highsecurity filter for email messages are strongly encouragedto use their home email to receive the approval to testnotice. If an email approval to test notice is not receivedwithin 10 business days after submission of the application, applicants should look in their trash or quarantinefolders before contacting the BRPT office to investigate.Application AuditsThe BRPT randomly audits applications to verify theapplicant’s eligibility to take the exam. Audits are conducted prior to granting approval to test. Audits includeverification of the accuracy of the application, eligibilitypathway selected, approval signatures, and supportingdocuments. The BRPT auditor may contact the candidateto supply additional information or to clarify questions. Ifthe audit cannot be completed due to inability to verifythe accuracy of the application, eligibility pathway, orsupporting documents, or the candidate does not providethe additional required documentation as requested, thecandidate is declared ineligible. The application fee isreturned to the candidate less a 50 administrative fee.Special Accommodations“The BRPT complies with the Americans with DisabilitiesAct (ADA) to try to ensure that otherwise qualifiedindividuals are granted appropriate accommodationsso as to permit them to be tested on their true abilities.7

CCSH CANDIDATE HANDBOOKApplicants requiring special accommodations mustcomplete an ADA accommodations request and submit itwith the exam application (see pages 23-24). Requestsfor testing accommodations must include documentationfrom a qualified professional who has provided evaluationor treatment for the candidate of a formally diagnosed andADA qualified disability. Requests cannot be consideredwithout the required supporting documentation.Acceptance For ExaminationAfter an application is reviewed and approved for eligibility, anapproval to test notice is emailed to the candidate. This emailwill include the link and instructions of how to schedule theirexam at their nearest testing center, as well as their Candidate ID number and their exam window dates to test within.Scheduling A Test Center AppointmentApproved candidates can schedule an appointment totake the CCSH exam at their selected testing center onany open date within their approval window. Schedulingof testing appointments is done on a first-come firstserved basis directly with Pearson VUE, not BRPT, duringtheir normal operating hours. The earlier a candidatecontacts Pearson VUE the better the chance to obtain thepreferred exam date, time, and location. Contact information for Pearson VUE is included in the approval to testnotice emailed to candidates. The notice also identifiesthe time period for which the test window is valid.Pearson VUE generates an email exam confirmationnotice within 24 hours of scheduling an appointment. Ifan email confirmation notice is not received within 24hours of scheduling with Pearson VUE candidates shouldlook in their trash or quarantine folders before contactingPearson VUE to investigate.Candidates are responsible for selecting the location oftheir testing center. Whenever possible they should travelto the exam site prior to the examination date to avoidgetting lost or arriving late on the day of the exam appointment. Late arrivals are not permitted to take the exam andare considered “No Show” candidates.Canceling An Examination With RefundOnce a testing appointment is made, a candidate maycancel or withdraw from the examination and receivea partial refund of 400.00. The 50.00 applicationprocessing fee is absorbed once your application hasbeen processed. In order to cancel an exam and receivea partial refund, the candidate must:»»8scheduled examination appointment.»»Cancel the scheduled appointment directly withPearson VUE no later than 24 hours prior to thescheduled examination appointment.Once a candidate has canceled their authorization withthe BRPT and also canceled their scheduled exam withPearson VUE, in order to reschedule an exam they willneed to submit a Reapplying Candidate Application.BLS/CPR ExpirationCandidates whose BLS/CPR certification expires beforetheir testing date are not eligible to take the examinationuntil they supply BRPT with documentation of certificationrenewal. They may reinstate their eligibility to test withintheir original one year approval to test window once BLSis renewed. The candidate must submit a copy of theirrenewed certification via fax, email, or mail to the BRPTExecutive Office along with a written request to reinstatethe eligibility window. Applicants receive a new approvalto test notice via email with the dates of their reinstatedeligibility window.As a friendly reminder, the BRPT will not accept any lifesupport certifications that were earned online.The Day Of The ExaminationCandidates should plan to get a good night of sleep beforethe exam. They should eat a well-balanced meal prior toreporting to the test center.Candidates should report to the test center on the day ofexamination as instructed in the exam confirmation noticethey received via email. BRPT recommends that candidatesarrive 30 minutes prior to the scheduled exam start time.Candidates have 3 hours to complete the 100 item exam.There is an optional brief computer based tutorial availableat the start of the exam and a short optional computerizedsurvey at the conclusion of the exam. Candidates need topay attention to time limitations built into the tutorial.For best results, candidates should pace themselves by periodically checking their progress. This allows them to makenecessary time adjustments. The more items answered,the better the chance of achieving a passing score. If acandidate is unsure of a response, they should eliminate asmany options as possible and choose an option from thosethat remain. Candidates are allowed to mark questionsfor review later in the exam session. There is no penalty forguessing and each item counts as one point.Call the BRPT office no later 24 hours prior to theBoard of Registered Polysomnographic TechnologistsTM, Inc.

CCSH CANDIDATE HANDBOOKTwo Forms Of IdentificationAt check-in candidates must present two forms ofidentification that include their signature.
